Parents Warn of Car Seat Danger After Child’s Death

A Louisiana couple is issuing a dire warning after their 17-month-old daughter died in car seat. Mia Smith was found dead in her day care car seat in June 2015. “This is like lightening striking our soul. This isn't something that we had any idea could possibly happen to us,” mom Lisa Smith told Inside Edition. During nap time the baby was left strapped in a car seat on the floor. Her day care provider stepped out to a doctor's appointment. When she returned Mia wasn't breathing. #InsideEdition

This isn’t the fault of the car seat. It’s the fault of the negligent daycare workers. That’s why the lady got the manslaughter charge.

This made me remember when my kids were babies, and if I got home with them and they were asleep, sometimes I would let them stay in their car seats to nap a little longer. This is disgusting When my son was 2 almost 3 I started looking at daycare, I toured 7 or 8 and I settled on one I really like. Lots of staff, large clean facilities, and 3 different playgrounds for the different aged children, it was a little more expensive but I chose it because of the facilities I toured it seemed best. Everything was great for about a month. Then I go to pick him up one day and he had a golf ball sized bruise on his head. No one could tell me what happened or how he got it, one of the workers even had the nerve to ask me if I was sure he didn't have it when I dropped him off...Like really? I definitely would've noticed a golf ball sized bruise on his forehead. He never went back, and I filed a complaint with the state. I took off work for a week to coordinate schedules with trusted family members who thankfully rearranged their schedules after hearing what happened to help me out. I lost trust in daycares forever, I had toured 7 to 8 facilities did research on each one and met with the staff several times before he even went there and I still got screwed never again. It's so hard to have to leave the most precious gift you've ever gotten with a stranger in the first place and even if you're selective and research your choices you can still get screwed. Thankfully my son recovered fine no concussion or anything. I took him to the doctor immediately after the fact due to the bruise being so big, I just couldn't imagine loosing him. The agony this couple is going to go threw forever is just cruel, I hope that women got some serious time. She took their baby away, you don't just come back from that

I worked at a daycare for 2 years and there was a story VERY similar to this that they taught us in training and was the main reason why weren't allowed to let children sleep in rockers. After they fall asleep you move them immediately to their cribs or wake them up! That daycare worker is 100% at fault, im not sure if she had training or updated certifications but this is literally a cautionery tale that got passed down thru years of training in my city!

The daycare worker is absolutely to blame for leVing the child unattended for a considerable amount of time but that's not what's so shocking about this. I know plenty of people who leave babies in carseats to sleep, just to avoid waking them. I had no idea that this was even possible, so glad to have stumbled upon this.

Mia will be missed. 😭😞🙏I don't think the day care is professional and has certified employees when employee did such an ignorant action.I watch over my niece and nephew very closely and have radar on them because I wanna protect them from harm. When someone trust you with their kid(s), it is your job to protect them like you would do your own child. She is very selfish and disgusting.

I’m a little torn by this. How many parents transfer a sleeping baby from the car to a quiet room?? Countless, that’s how many! I was just watching a nation wide tv show where they literally did that exact thing. It’s a tragedy that turned into a lesson for thousands of parents. Heartbreaking.

Yes me to I am a little torn by this to I think the actual harm was not being supervised. I have seen countless of babies sleeping in car seats with supervision of course. Like grocery stores, at the house, restraunts. I mean anything can become dangerous to a baby if you leave them alone. Yes it's a danger to be warned of so parents don't think it's safe to just leave a baby sleeping in a car seat for long periods with or without supervision but I also think that it's not gonna hurt anything for max a hour or two with supervision like a long car ride.

I agree, I did this with both my babies. Left them in the car seat sleeping. But it may have been the leaving her unattended that was the real issue. Because she couldn’t hear her wake up or squirm or at the very least just check on her every few mins.

Chavale Pierson it’s not necessarily the buckle, it’s the head leaning forward from being in a upright position in a car seat. Like I stated before, many parents have not wanted to wake a sleeping baby from a car ride and removed the car seat and put the baby in a quiet room. I’m sure said parents have also periodically checked on sleeping baby, but evidently it can happen quite quickly. Hence being torn.

@@AnnieNugget it's absolutely true that the daycare worker neglected that baby and is a large part of why she died. However that doesn't change the fact that she asphyxiated because she was in that car seat. Being in that car seat with her head in that position prevented her from being able to breathe, as stated in the video. If the worker would've actually been taking care of the girl she would've noticed it and been able to prevent it. They said "I didn't know this type of asphyxiation existed till just now. Will definitely be mindful w my next babies." The entire comment was just them talking about their new knowledge of this asphyxiation. The daycare worker was never brought up. The daycare worker was not the point of the comment and there's absolutely no reason you needed to bring her up, especially in a condescending way with "that's not the point."

This almost happened to me being a first time mum, I never knew of the dangers of carseats back then. My daughter had fallen asleep in the car and we just decided to let her carry on sleeping for a bit when we got home. After half an hour of her still not waking, which was unusual for her, I decided to get her out and wake her, it took a while to wake her up even when she was out of the car seat and I remember being concerned but she did eventually wake and so I didn't think anything of it but also didn't let her sleep in her car seat again after that, it was only a few years later when I heard how bad it was that I realised if I'd left her any longer she could have died! I'm so glad I woke her when I did!

She wasn't at the car. She was in the carseat. There's a difference. My brother and sister-in-law left my nephew in his carseat if he fell asleep. They would bring him in place him on the floor next to them and let him finish his nap. There's absolutely nothing wrong with allowing your child to nap in a carseat in the car. The issue comes up when you take them out of the car. In the car the locking mechanism is tilted at a proper angle for your baby to be able to sleep safely. On the floor of your house it isn't tilted properly. Unfortunately a lot of parents still dont know this little fact.
