Up until recently, I was an art teacher for both 4/5 year olds AND middle schoolers. It was incredible how often I’d say the same things (ex: get out from under the table” to “don’t put that in your mouth again’ to “sure, show me your new Pokémon cards”) to both groups in one day.

So accurate. The teen is eating us out of house and home, and the toddler is on the dragon warrior diet (the dew from a single ginkgo leaf and the energy of the universe). You forgot that toddlers want to do EVERYTHING themselves, and the teen is like “can you just do it for me?” 🙄 They think they can live on their own and at the same time they think I’m crazy when I try to show them how to open a bank account.

As she got older and could tell time, our daughter used to wake us up for work and church. We never set an alarm clock. If we had a “discussion,” I would make her sit down and I would stand up. (She was taller than me.). But, that girl knew the Bible and prayed like a preacher! She used to help with the little kids at church. Her favorite verse was “In my House are many rooms…”. Now, she is with Him in those rooms.

My boys were wrestlers which means they started their day running at 5 am with the team, went to school, then practice (or meet). Home by 7. I packed their breakfast and lunch. By the time I picked them up at 7 pm I'd have a crockpot full of food for EACH of them. I went through so much food I thought we'd go bankrupt. Let's not even go into the smell when I picked them up ...like a herd of Buffalo.

I have 3 young adults now (23, 21 and19) and since they are roughly 2 years apart...I had to go through each stage every 2 years! The toddler years were unreal and I look back and still cannot believe how I did it all. I was a crazed mom for sure. Then the teenage years were actually fine with my first 2 boys. They rarely went out glued to their video games! Pretty respectful to me. It was the youngest daughter who raised hell from Junior year on! I cannot wait until she turns 20 next year and out of teenage years forever! I told myself karma is a bitch! Sorry Mom!

The driving hit home. When I was teaching my youngest daughter to drive, we practiced in the empty school parking lot before taking the show on the road. Idk what my parents did but apparently I was usually a very well behaved toddler. The only occasion I still remember when I went rogue as a 4-year-old was this: My mom had something she needed to attend so she left me in my dad's care for the day. He said he was going to see someone important and if I sat silent on a chair waiting for a while, he would get me an ice cream. What I didn't know at the time was that this "important person" was the interviewing boss for a highly paid position for my dad. I sat silently on my chair during their talk, but when the boss tested my dad's German skills and I couldn't understand a word what was said, I slowly grew impatient. After what felt like aaagggeeesss (probably 30 minutes) I stomped over and asked "Can I get my ice cream now?". My dad was a bit embarrassed but the boss said "oh, for sure" and guided me to the cafeteria to get an ice cream. Luckily my dad got the job, but now 24 years later I am facepalming :D

My kids are now 35 & 32. The 35 yr old has his own 7 yr old. NOW I GET TO WATCH! Watch them come to understand why they thought I was a crazy person most of their childhood. (Insert evil laugh).
