Parenting Teens Toward Adulthood (Part 2) - Dr. Ken Wilgus
Dr. Ken Wilgus encourages parents to deliberately work their way out of the parenting role by the time their child is 18, and instructs them to see their teenagers as young adults, not large children. He offers tips on how to progressively give your teen more responsibility, along with examples of how to have difficult conversations on a range of topics, from music choices to dating.

Long car rides with deep discussions of being charitable, treating others the way we expect to be treated ,and prayer works.
My son turned 18 this year and he thinks because he’s an adult that he can do anything. With that said, he is not into dating and so is my daughter. I told them what my father told me “ that having a bf/gf is a responsibility. And if you want a bf/gf and you want to go to the movies or whatever, then get a job. Don’t come to me asking for money. I’m not the one dating your bf/gf.”
Made an agreement with my children before we got to teenage years that having a special friend would be best at junior in high school. Explained old enough to earn earn, close enough to graduation to finish if an unexpected event happens.
What a wonderful subject and presentation. 100% reflects both parents and kids actions and conversations.
I love how practical this is! When my sons became teens I truly thought they had LOST THEIR MINDS. I wish I'd heard this back then. Especially with boys, they want that autonomy!

I agree raising teenage boys in this day & age is really really hard
Dude could easily speak to us seculars. This is general insight that is useful to anyone.
I'm the queen of speeches. 😂
Thank you so very much! You said a lot of things i have recently learned to be very true! And also, thanks for your encouraging comment about how we are doing!❤😊
Big help. Thank you 🙏🏽
Excellent and practical information. Thanks!
That was amazing.. Thanks forever
“To teach not to need me”, to be done. Sounds great but emotional to let go.
This was excellent!
Thank you for this-Q&A at the end was hilarious!
Genius 😊 thank u for these messages part 1 and part 2!
Mine are 24 and 20. The 24 year old is almost ready. The 20 year old thinks he knows it all. 🤦🏽♀️
Do you have advise on bed time for 15 year old girls. Do you just let them go when they want?
This is awesome and so helpful!!

What if your kid is a total reprobate and does not want to act like an adult, and is poisoning the other kids in the house?

Ok
I'm surprised that you accept the American dating culture this much as Christians. I grew up in a youth church where we hung out in groups but had no dating culture. We were friends and there was no flirting or dating. People were typically at least in their twenties before they started dating, that is, almost ready to marry. And so more mature decisions could be made. I would not let my kids go off alone to date at 16, since it would serve no purpose.

Thank you for this comment. I always wondered why Americans allow their teens to date so early, isn't it fornication or is it a platonic relationship?
I will brick it?
