Pareidolia: Why People Keep Seeing Crazy Stuff on Mars

Why do people supposedly see a woman in pictures sent from Mars by the Curiosity Rover? For the same reason that people see Pepe the Frog in their toast, or Jesus in a tortilla: a phenomenon known as pareidolia.

+MarkFilipAnthony Actually, that's an interesting thing: kids who have imaginary friends generally don't actually believe their friends are real. They know and willingly admit they're just pretending if asked. It's only the adults who think their imaginary friends are real...

Sonicbolt At least in terms of knowing what's real and what's not...yes, yes they are. People are taught to believe in things that don't make sense; they're not born believing. There was another study recently which showed that children raised in a home who were taught that supernatural stories were true had a much harder time discerning reality from fantasy than those who weren't. Lack of information can be cured through education; misinformation is much harder to fix.

It's kinda like constant cloud watching, it sometimes gets quite dangerous when I see things while I'm walking about London. it's a part of my brain that I can't turn off so it's sometimes creepy as hell when it's dark and I see things in the shadows. I am always thankful how nonjudgemental you are (or are in your videos I should say) about peoples' beliefs. Beliefs can help people cope with the heavy realities of life - those who have seen what horrific acts humans can easily do, those who are traumatized by violence or accidents, and those who have suffered great loss as examples. Lots of troll-bait out there will insult peoples' belief, even those who are passive believers not shoving the matter into anyone's 'face'. Secondly, I always get a big thrill when I see another SciShow viddy notification!! Love this show. Can you do one on epigenetics and the latest research news of epigenetics? xoxoxoxoxo you make a sick nerdy girl happy either way.

***** Did you bother to actually read the experiment itself, review the data, see where they were drawing their test pool and what they used as a control group, etc? I haven't myself, however if you haven't either, then you can't say that the "experiment" says yes, only that the video is telling you that the experiment concluded as such. If you don't look into the experiment itself, as well as its methodology, then you really can't say what the experiment concludes, only what the video (which is separate from the experiment) is telling you it concludes. I hypothesize that believing what people tell you about the results of an experiment, without actually looking into the experiment yourself, makes you more gullible..... For the record I don't believe in the supernatural.

  • @zerocalvin

    @zerocalvin

    9 жыл бұрын

Brent Davila actually i did read the experiment cited by the video, and it's exactly what hank explained it.. believing in the supernatural apparently make your brain more susceptible in seeing things that is not there because your brain just simple accept that there is a person when it is told a person was there (activating face recognition part of your brain call FFA) and looking for said person, and if your brain cant find it, it do what it does best.. make things up.. resulting you see things that isnt there. so yeah, you can draw conclusion that believing in supernatural would make you more gullible. btw, if you havnt read it, i highly suggest that you do, it's very interesting stuff.

BTW I've never understood why religious people are ridiculed for finding sanctity in random patterns which resemble holy figures. Many denominations use paintings to represent the divine. These images are treated with respect, even though they tend to be man-made and generally aren't miraculous, unnatural portals to heaven. They are just colorful substances arranged in a certain pattern. What if this pattern has been arranged as a result of a random natural phenomenon, rather than a purposeful human action? I don't think this necessarily makes it unfit for religious practices. Quite the opposite - as a culture, we tend to ascribe greater value to rare, unlikely natural phenomena (most of the nature is actually gross, scary or boring). If a natural monument can be considered beautiful, then it can also be considered sacred.

Elitistb616 That depends, random appearance of such an image isn't always interpreted as an expression of particular deific will. Besides, the concept of divine intent tends to be very broad. If contemplating the divine causes people to interpret these patterns in a way which provokes greater observance of religious customs, you could say that the phenomenon (or its spiritual interpretation) matches the divine will.

One time after I had major surgery they put me on some of the strongest painkillers they have. Like, just a constant IV drip (it was a major incision and removal of bone) and as you might imagine I was incredibly out of it. I remember I'd just get locked up in the smallest details and if someone else wasn't present I'd often just sit there in my own little world for hours on end. And in doing so I remember I spent A LONG time just staring at the tiling of my room and making out hundreds of faces/shapes in the random shapes in the marbling. I only bring this up because as a normal, everyday, non-doped up individual I've never done this, nor am I prone to seeing impossible stuff where it doesn't exist. And yet, when my brain was reduced to a more primitive state it occupied a vast part of my time. Seeming to suggest to me that this "mental desire to find familiar features" is deeply ingrained on a very basic level. And it just depends on how our conscious, thinking brain operates whether we give these thoughts credence or not.

I remember having a rorschach test. The psychologist giving it kept looking back at the paper as I was describing what I saw. Apparently its not common for someone to give detailed, multi-paragraph descriptions of what they see. But it seems like none of the things I described were actually worrysome, so my file just ended up with the note "Very creative."

a good example of this in cars is the australian au model falcon. the headlights were shaped so that if you percieved a face in the car, it looked sad. this led to a lowering of sales when compared to its competitor - the holden commodore.

That first Rorschach image totally looks like a tarantula. It's got the big fuzzy mouth parts on top and their funny little two front not-legs, and then the first two pairs of legs are pointing diagonally upward and sideways, and the last two pairs of legs are touching its abdomen. It's even got a point for the spinnerets on the bottom

My question first is; what makes all the component colours of white light - all which have different frequencies and wavelengths- appear as one before they refract at a surface? And then could you please explain dispersion of light? Please please please please pleaseee!

it would be cool if you could explain that picture that's going around on tumblr that says on a certain day you'll be able to see mars as clearly as the moon, and that it won't happen again until 2877 or something like that. i know it isn't real, but would anything like that ever be remotely possible?

+SciShow You didn't mention the Martian rat one guy claimed to have spotted in a Curiosity photo. The picture had been touched up, as you could tell by comparing it with the original on the NASA site, but it was a great fantasy, and a lot of us rat owners had a lot of fun discussing it. Space rats from Mars--I want one!

Stormree The rover has a kind of camera arm, which it rotated around itself while snapping photos, which we on earth then puzzled together into the selfie without the camera arm. It's basically a really weird fisheye lens.

The question is more about pictures which are released from MARS, the key word is released, NASA has a 24 hour free video stream / picture site without due process? It is possible that MARS rover may have come across unknown moving objects or shapes which needed to be audited before releasing to public. We may never know.

Its about organising chaos as brains can't deal with random information. I learned it's possibly an evolutionary advantage to help associate friends from foes by recognising a face. similar pathways are probably used to cause this phenomenon... like when you see shapes in the dark which is also part of fight or flight - identifying if the shape wants to eat you or be your friend...
