I’ve always used scope shadows to determine the optics center, especially if shooting cheaper scopes with no parallax control. It’s a great technique to check yourself so I still use it on high end scopes as well
If I understand correctly, scope shadow can be used to indicate whether your eye is centered on the optics. Please check with someone familiar with optics ray tracing.... Excellent use of a "problem" situation as an aid for / to the shooter!!
Awesome vid Todd. Thanks for clearing up and bettering our knowledge.

Wow! I never knew this, thank you!
So some scope shadow is good. I wouldn't have thought of this myself. Thank you

What is being taught even in the military today is no scope shadow. This is old and outdated... as you can see

@@Guitarjourney4life OK but then you are just moving until you find the shadow on both sides and guesstimating the half way point: that's not very scientific...
Learning sight alignment with irons and then applying to scope sometimes helps reduce parallax error.
Would love to see a video on tips/advice on spotting, especially when there is mixed terrain behind the target. Ex: trace, spash vs impact... I know this is an area where I have a lot to learn.

We shoot in crazy terrain all over the world. I use scope shadow every shot. I am only talking about a small amount of equal fuzz along the edge of the scope to ensure your eye is in the center of the glass.
Thanks
