    LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this tutorial. I've paper pieced by sewing through the paper, also by using a wax paper template & love the way Clare explains the process, step-by-step, showing why she's doing the extra effort for ACCURACY. I originally viewed this video as I got this lightbox for Christmas & haven't used it yet & was looking for inspiration! Clare exceeded my expectations! Thanks for a great tutorial!

With the ability to fold back in this case it would make sense to not sew thorough the paper and that to me would be the worst part... getting all the paper out of my stitches. Now to find out if you have a better way of doing more complicated pieces and tiny pieces I love your color choices A great burst of colors beating bulk seems into submission

    I just saw your video. This is the first time I've understood paper piecing. You filled in the gaps for me! Also, when I started quilting I realized I needed to acquire something to set my seams without heat. I used to be in the book arts and had a drawer full of tools so I came up with both a bone folder, which reduces friction on the fabric when the folder is pressed to it, and I found a small ink brayer from block printing that I've had for so long. I am glad I can use these now in paper piecing! Thank you for your video!

    This is your first video I've ever seen. This is an awesome technique! Thank you so much!! They just did a lesson on paper piecing in quilt class, but my printer ate my newsprint paper. (It was sooo fun picking 20+ pieces of shredded paper out of my printer for over 20min...) I've learnt to abhor flying geese, so this might just be my ticket to NOT having my points disappear into the seam allowance 😀 Unrelated: What kind of machine is that?? It's GORGEOUS! Yes, bad reason to buy a sewing machine, and I have two that are 'perfectly good' and 'work wonderfully', respectively; but that's not stopping my machine envy 😍😂

    Diane, just go to the hardware store and ask them to cut a piece of plexiglass the size of your light box. My husband cut mine. Plexiglass is very inexpensive. I then taped it (wth some very strong tape) all around the edges. I use that as a cutting board. It lasts a very long time. I've done this to a large and small light box and one has lasted over six years. When you feel it replaced...it's easy. I also write with a permanent marker on my plexiglass for different reasons....and it all erases with alcohol.

    I've never done paper piecing & was wondering, do you have material on grain like you would with a regular pattern? Also I did not know if you can cut n the light box ? Thank you 👍😊

  • @terigriffith

    @terigriffith

    5 жыл бұрын

    Because the fabric is held on the paper the grain direction doesn't matter as much and when it is quilted the fabric's drape is held by the backing. If you have thin or order fabric, you could spray starch the fabric before you cut.

  • @clare-rowley

    @clare-rowley

    Grain is not as important on a quilt as it would be on a garment because the fabric will be anchored by the backing and batting. The light tablet I used on this video can be found here www.creativefeet.com/products/tools/cutterpillar-glow-light-boards and are designed for cutting on them with the self-healing mat that is designed for them. I was not cutting on the tablet surface.

    Prob one of the best tutorials but this whole process is a bit intimidating. I just printed out the pattern, cut the pieces and glued them to the fabric and sewed. What would the drawback to this be?

  • @clare-rowley

    @clare-rowley

    4 ай бұрын

    The needle becomes damaged when sewing through paper and then cuts the fabric fibers, weakening the quilt. If the quilt will only be a wall hanging, there's no reason not to sew through paper other than wasting paper and the time to remove it. It may seem as if this process takes longer, but it actually is faster once your brain is trained. Also, tearing the paper away weakens the stitching unless you're using a really thin paper. I hope this helps make sense as to why I worked to not see through the paper, and thanks for commenting! 😁

  • @clare-rowley

    @clare-rowley

    3 жыл бұрын

    If I say 2mm = 12 stitches per inch and if I say 1.8 it's like 20 stitches per inch. If you don't press open you're more likely to break a needle when quilting.
