Paper quality is as important as the drawing or painting medium quality. I think it is even MORE important when it comes to pastels. In this tutorial, I explained how.

I'm new to Pastels and i bought the Canson Mi Teintes, and like you said you can see the texture show through no matter how much Pastel you put in, I wouldn't say I like this paper. Clairefontaine is nice but to much money for beginners.

Canson says that this paper is made with two different textures, one rough and one smoother for the other side. Have you tried using the opposite side of the page with your pastels?

You are so charming ) I am a big fan of Clairefontaine myself, and even though I always tempted to give some other paper a chance (and always regret afterwards), no one was ever able to beat it ) Worth every penny! I tried sennelier pastel card and it's also a great quality, but just not my material. As well as any type of velour paper. Thanks for the video and best wishes from Ukraine.

Canson mi teintes benefits from pastel sticks. Layering without blending too much and using an impressionistic style is what I think works the best. Clairefontaine works best for layering and a very detailed work I think.

It’s also better to start with a very hard pastel like Nupastels and if you want to layer, use soft pastel sticks and pencils for details. I don’t know whether pan pastels really work the way you like to work on anything but Pastelmat or very fine sanded paper. Usually, when I do pastel drawing on colored pastel paper, I like to use the color of the paper as either a background or showing through. As others have said, it’s a much looser style.

Pastelmat is the very best pastel-paper. You should tr< mi-teintes-touch, it is better than the normal mi-teintes, but not like pastelmat.

Paper is important, though I highly recommend using a "Fixative" between layers, and when your artwork is complete. Also, I understand Canson specifies there are two different textures on either side of their Mi Teintes paper, intended as Artists' choice. One is heavy texture, the other side much smoother. About "Fixatives" for your readers: You can save your progress without worry, plus your artwork is predictable when adding layers. I am happy to say my "fixed" charcoal, graphite, dry, and oil pastels stay cleaner. Fixative doesn't change texture or colors, it just freezes your artwork in place but allows further work on layers. To be clear, you can no longer erase work that has been "fixed", the problem of smudging your work accidentally is resolved when fixed and you can make changes over top of fixed surfaces. Some extra heavy layers may be disturbed with over-handling, but you can prevent previous layers from bleeding through, because the fixative eliminates unwanted layer blending. Your fixed art remains intact awaiting further work in layers or areas. Note: I like to spray a light "fix" layer whenever I set my work aside. I know some artists prefer to use a fixative only when they are finished, which is another choice. A final "fix" is a good choice to maintain integrity before you prepare artwork for framing or mounting. It's not a final coat or varnish if you want that kind of finish. My drawing fixative recommendations are matte finish. I believe gloss is for final finishing. I prefer Krylon Spray Fixative, purchased at Lowe's for about $9-12 (generally less expensive and works as well as other drawing fixative brands) ...I don't use Krylon Gallery Premium which is more than double the cost. Other brand general price findings: Sennelier has a variety of Specialized Spray Fixatives $25-40 (Sennelier is certainly a reliable brand, and popular) Lascaux Fixative Aerosol Spray $42; UV-1 Protect $46-50; UV-2 $60 (I assume this is a professional brand or otherwise distinctive?) Spectrafix Spray Fixative $16 Also in a pump spray, likely a final fixative. (An ecological formula, milk protein and grain alcohol?) Grumbacher Workable Fixative $15 (well-known brand, comparable cost) Windsor and Newton Fixative $15 (well-known brand, comparable cost) And a last bit of wisdom, cheap hairspray will help chalk and Charcoal stay adhered to paper and lessen smudging. I wouldn't recommend it as archival quality for your art, but it could be great for working on studies.

A workeable fixative between layers works wonders. Gives the pastels something to grab on to and prevents the layers underneath from lifting or the different layers from blending if you do not want them.

Great video! Thanks for posting your instruction on this. It was just what I needed. I am a beginner and bought the Canson paper because I thought it would be a good starting point without spending too much, but I can see now why I am struggling so much with it. Thanks again!

I've only tried one sheet of each with Nupastels (so, very hard soft pastels). I was going for a more abstract style and NOT using pencils; more than 3-4 layers was not necessary for my style. For me, the Canson actually worked better. The Pastelmat retained the mark and was quite hard to blend out using fingers or a chamois. But I'm going to try both with softer pastels (sennelier) soon and see what difference this makes.

Thanks for sharing! Please let me know how it goes! Pastelmat is very fine-grained so it makes sense that it retained the mark of the harder pastel. I recommend trying to blend with Q-tips.

Thank you for this. I should've watched it earlier. I'm 90% done this large commission pastel portrait and there are some stubborn spots in the background that I just can't fill with colour - and I am using Mi Teintes. I just hope I can salvage it. You really do get what you pay for. ☹️

You can try applying a light coat of fixative in that area and try painting when it dries? It creates extra tooth. But make sure to apply that fixative spray to a smaller area first before you apply it to your painting. Just something I would do if I were in your position 😊☺️😇

A mí tampoco me gusta el Canson Mi Teintes por la cara con más relieve, así que suelo utilizar la cara posterior, que tiene una textura menos rugosa. Y me encanta la variedad de colores.

Although I work in oil pastels, I've had the same kind of struggle with Mi-Teintes. Layering and blending are a real pain, definitely a no from me. I wonder why this paper is so popular though? Off to purchase Pastelmat instead. I've wanted to try it for a long time now, but the high price was a little discouraging, so I opted for cheaper alternatives. However, I think that, like with many art supplies in general, you get what you paid for.

It's a bit strange to compare two completely different papers(with and without coating)💥 - it was necessary to compare Pastel Mat with Mi-Teintes Touch, and not with Mi-Teintes🤔.) Well, I, a Russian woman, cannot understand foreign girls, as well as the politics of their states - the logic is too magical🙂.)
