PAPAYA KING is BACK! Is NYC's Iconic Hot Dog Worth The Hype?
Papaya King is back after a hiatus of more than a year! The East Village/St. Mark's Papaya King location closed, and then fans of the beloved NYC iconic hot dog joint were saddened to see that the Upper East Side Papaya King flagship location had also shuttered. There were reports though that they were planning to reopen in a new building nearby. Unfortunately, these gave way to reports of a disagreement between Papaya King and the landlord of this new building, and it seemed Papaya King was doomed to never reopen.
But it was a July 4th miracle! Subtly, Papaya King reopened its doors this past weekend, and all of its fans have flooded back. Out of all the Papaya spinoff restaurants, such as Grey's Papaya and Papaya Dog, I always found Papaya King to be hands down the best one, so I also braved a scorching hot summer day yesterday to film a vid!
I'm a big fan of hot dogs, and I may have high standards living in New Jersey. New Jersey is an incredible hot dog scene, with giants such as Rutt's Hut and Hiram's Hot Dogs. In my opinion NYC does not compare to NJ when it comes to hot dogs, and my memory of Papaya King too is that it is a good but not great hot dog. But to be fair I have never had the flagship location, so we will try Papaya King together and see if it is indeed the best hot dog in NYC and one of the best hot dogs in America! After all, the connection between Anthony Bourdain and Papaya King is well-known, so perhaps I just need to try the UES Papaya King location!

@@petergoldberg6293 Good Morning, I do understand what you are saying. I was going to ask you though, why do you think that Gray's papaya is $7.50, and then I thought that maybe Gray's papaya MAY HAVE some sort of long term rental agreement with their landlord and Papaya King just moved into their new location. Maybe proximity to their previous location was super important. But coming at it from a percentage angle it does seem though that $11.99 is a far distance from $7.50,... when the similar item can be purchased for $7.50.
Those prices negate the whole original reasoning for going there. Even for 2024, too much for a couple of dogs. It definitely must all go to the rent. I'll try t for nostalgia, but , I can get equally good( bad) dogs cheaper in the city.

Exactly my thoughts as well. I remember back in the 90’s they were something $.50 a piece. That was the primary reason people went. Happy to hear they finally opened the relocated store. I used to visit the original UES location frequently (86th St/3rd Ave) and I'll tell you that a big part of the experience was enjoying your meal while looking directly out at the crossroads intersection. As for condiments, they're highly personal so I generally wouldn't mention the following, but here goes; I recommend topping with mustard and red onions (stewed red onions). It's a lovely compliment to the beef dog and the hot robust mustard goes well with the sweetness of the onions in red sauce.
