[PAOLO SOLERI] Arcology

Arcology is Paolo Soleri's concept of cities which embody the fusion of architecture with ecology. The arcology concept proposes a highly integrated and compact three-dimensional urban form that is the opposite of urban sprawl with its inherently wasteful consumption of land, energy resources and time, and tendency to isolate people from each other and the community. Miniaturization creates the Urban Effect, the complex interaction between diverse entities and individuals, which mark healthy systems both in the natural world and in every successful and culturally significant city in history.

i found this book in my dads book collection, he is an architect, and i am amazed at his vision. it is the most logical next step if we want to conserve the environment while maintaining low energy consumption.

Being an Architectural drafter and having toured Arcosanti, what I saw was a very unattractive concrete bunker Paolo Soleri built an indestructible memorial to himself. If this was a good plan there are lots of smart people with enough money to finish this monstrosity. There was enough concrete used to pour slabs for half of Phoenix. They are buying electricity from the local power company and they put up a fence so everybody's cars and mobile homes are not visible. They told us the reason they can't expand it is because the road to it doesn't support emergency vehicles? Sounds like an excuse to give up on a lost cause.

I've never seen a mobile home at Arcosanti. Cars are on an open lot visible to all, but the town itself is designed for pedestrian use, not cars. But, unless you're willing to walk the 3 mile round trip to Cordes Junction for groceries or to visit a restaurant, you'll need a car to get there. The fact that it's prospering a decade after Soleri's death is proof enough for me that it is not a 'monument' to him. BTW, his actual monument is very small and simple in a rural cemetery on the property.
