    I grew up spending time at Phil’s mom and aunt at their house, although I was much younger than him. He was already on the road all the time so didn’t see him often, but when I got older I got to spend time with them a couple times a year. I watched Dime sit on Phil’s couch with that guitar messing around while a boxing match was on tv. I was probably 12 at that point. Then, I would meet with them at various shows when they would come back in the mid-late 90s. Although I was too young to party with them, I saw plenty backstage and elsewhere. I haven’t talked to Phil in probably over 20 years, but looking back those times were surreal. I’m so glad talented guys like these are not letting everyone forget just how incredible their music is. I still remember his mom, Mickey, sending me a box full of swag with the CFH cd when it came out. Who knew what that would become…

    Strange how the last four and a half hours of this playing on loop went by in five minutes...

  • @BaldotheDon

    @BaldotheDon

    2 жыл бұрын

    And I've been thinking about it off and on the last two days: Why am I looping this and not the original? Answers to questions like this never show up when I'm looking for them. I usually have to distract myself and wait for revelations on the peripheries. But it happened to me this hour while I played through one of my favorite missions in my favorite game for the thousandth time with this looping in the background... I cannot listen to the original so often 'cause it consistently salts the wound of what we've lost. Of what was taken from us. I _can_ keep listening to this unrestrained 'cause it reminds me of what we still have. Of what we can look forward to. Does that make any sense? It _thinks_ like a rationalization, but it _feels_ like a survival strategy. Grief compounds and dread builds. Grief is a horde of memories, like waves of zombies, walking corpses of the loves and joys that were taken by a loss, and you can't take them all on at once and survive, but you have to get through _all_ of them at some point if ever you'd have new loves and new joys. You cannot destroy them, but you cannot allow them to walk. You cannot allow them to overwhelm you. Start with the easy ones, the singular ones, avoid groups, and retreat when you must. _Retreat when you must!_ Over time, you quiet each memory. They never leave, but they lose the power to hurt you. They become more like ghosts, shades that linger, but have no power to harm. And some become a cold comfort, in time. So must you deal with your grief, or it becomes dread. The opposite of hope. Grief is terrible, but dread is a killer. So for me, this cover is a safer tether to the Abbotts than the original. It lets me hold the grief without actually touching it. I need that sometimes. And I'm glad I have it now. I love you all.

    Happy Birthday Dime, absolute legend and just a naturally talented guitarist. It's a good thing I was a little too young to get into metal when Dimebag was murdered. Reading about the details still chokes me up man, fuck. Mid 2000s I was getting into Dream Theater and had that typical "petrucci is God" elitism, I remember my bassist friend and I auditioned a drummer, he kept saying "Dimebag was the greatest guitarist" and I was like "heh, sure bud." If there's anything I've learned in music it's to always appreciate someone else's approach and talent even if you don't resonate it with it at that moment.
