[quoute]As the GTR-1 was designed to the latest GT1 regulations, it strictly speaking should have been based on a road car. Instead, a slightly toned down, road legal version was created alongside the racer for homologation purposes. While this popular interpretation of the regulations gave designer Nigel Stroud virtually free reign, it was decided to go for a front-mounted engine. By going down this path, Panoz created the first purpose-built sports racer with this layout since the 1960s.
As a result of the unusual engine location, the GTR-1 featured a three-part chassis. The most substantial was the carbon-fibre monocoque cockpit, which was connected to the front crash structure by a steel tubular frame that cradled the engine. The suspension layout followed the design ethos of the day with double-wishbones and push-rods on all four corners. Powering the GT1 racer was a Roush-tuned Ford V8, which was mated to a Panoz-modified XTrac sequential gearbox.
Although the engine was mounted in front of the cockpit, it sat completely behind the front axle, so the GTR-1 was effectively still a mid-engined machine.
For various reasons, the new Panoz was not particularly competitive and successful in Europe but in North America, several outright and class wins were scored.[/quote]

    Maybe in the future, we could never seen this kind of race car anymore. GT "prototype" with front-mid engine, RWD, V8, naturally aspirated.

    @@albedo9127 could be. Just look at today Le Mans Hypercar/LMDh, which one is not turbocharged? Only one, Caddy. Now on GT class, which front engined car is not turbocharged? Only two, even it is not in Le Mans (Mercedes AMG GT3 & Lexus RC F GT3). But at least in 2024 we could get one addition (Mustang GT3) Future seems boring? Maybe yes, maybe no. Lets just wait & see

    @@fajarastanaprima2771 honestly, up to 2011, the engines, wether turbo or NA, they sounded aggressive as hell. nowadays? it sounds like they're almost choking themselves. the exceptions being the 911s and the 2016-2019 Ford GT…

    @@togera77 Agree, about 2011-2013, even turbo cars were literally loud. If I am not mistaken, many race track after 2014 imposing noise limit (about 110 db max) because complaints from nearby people lives around race track. This is just kind of dumb & stupid for me. If people don't want noise, don't live near race track. Simple as that.

    @@fajarastanaprima2771 it's mostly old people. the kind that love to complain about everything. just like with airports. they go live NEXT to an airport and they complaint about the noise… they're just dumb… or they love to annoy people

    This is so awesome, I forgot about this car! I remember seeing it in my Le-Man racing game I had on the computer back in 2001. I always thought they looked super cool. What a vicious sound.
