One of my favourite Le Mans cars. During the race night of 1997 I slept in a field behind the chinese restaurant along Hunaudieres. The cars were extremely loud, especially the McLaren's and Panoz'. But only the deep, loud growl of the high revving Panoz made the ground shake beneath us. You could feel them everytime they passed by. An extraordinary experience I'll never forget :)

I can definitely confirm that. I went to my very first race in 1997 for the FIA GT championship at the old Hockenheimring at the age of 11. We were sitting on the stands at the entry of the Motodrom and despite the McLarens also being there and making their beautiful noise the Panoz' were already audible when they were accelerating out of Ayrton-Senna-chicane. And literally all hell broke loose when they came around the corner into the Motordrom. The stands were literally shaking from the noise those beasts were making. I think this might be the point when I got infected with that chronic disease causing you to be a petrol head 😀 Very fond memories!

I thought this car was the Batmobile when I was a kid. What a mad machine.

The DAMS machines were black which made them look even more so. Perry McCarthy and (I think) David Brabham dressed up as Batman and Robin at various points over the 1997 weekend.

Panoz was always a favorite of mine its sad all american race cars are disappearing. with the new corvette going mid engine like a European car no vipers.and the Ford gt with no V8 its nice to remind people of what true American muscle sounds like.

ive got a large carbon fiber piece with a latch on it from the red Panoz lemans car, crashed at Mosport and i snagged a 2x2 chunk of it, cool memories when i look at it, so light for such a big chunk too, its got part of the Panoz racing school written on it

I remember seeing (and hearing) the Panoz for the first time at the FIA GT race at Sebring in 1997. So wild looking and sounding like Nascar instead of a sports car. Great stuff!

1997&1998 Sebring. It was using Jack Roush Ford NASCAR engines. Roush also had success in IMSA back in the day. Later Panoz switched to Yates Fod, iirc.

I was on the start finish line at Donnington Park 1998 and this thing literally sucked the air out of my lungs. Insane noise that just can't be described to those that haven't heard it.

I remember well David Brabham driving this beast , the silver Visteon one, what a machine

Video never does racing justice. This car makes your body shake when it drives by. One of the loudest cars I've ever heard to where it wasn't just noise pollution. It had such a beautiful exhaust note.

Love the Panoz cars! American & powered by Roush Ford! Saw the car at Laguna Seca along with the Porsche GT1 & Mc Laren F1!

Best sounding car ever on the race track. Very close to the sound of a WW2 fighter especially when you get two back to back with a Vet following close behind. I miss them so much

This is actually the Panoz GTP - an evolution of the GTR-1, which was actually more like an LMP-1 wearing GTR-1 bodywork. It actually has a 4" longer wheelbase compared the GTR-1 from 1997/98 and has a few other changes, too. The GTP was run by Larbre Competition in 2004 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans before being retired to vintage racing. The Same outfit - JMB classic - also prepares an older, orignal GTR-1 for another client, too.

Never saw the GT1 cars race but I did get to see the AMLS LMP1 Panoz race a coupe of times ( they won the race at Portland) Very distinctive and incredible loud cars. Thanks for sharing BM.

I remember watching this car race at Bowmanville Mosport Park. Panoz had a racing school there. I even heard that they owned the track but never knew really if that was true. It was pretty cool tho.

this car sounds like one of the old can am monsters, its probably the last top class car to have a v8 of that size. the corvetters like c5r, c6r and c7r all have great sound tracks but they never made a le mans prototype with those engines.
