panellogy 505 - my 30 fave comic "auteur artists" - pt.1 of 2
Ойын-сауық
cartoonists who usually write their own stories are responsible for a good part - maybe even most - of the comics in my collection... therefore I have to do two parts with 30 ranks, this is the first one with the ranks 30 to 16.
needless to say that the whole listing and ranking is terribly flawed, subjective, depending on my mood and whims and what I've read in the last year(s) ... and actually remember.

Thanks. I really appreciate your in depth reviews of different artists and feel honored my work made the list.

You ARE on a role baby! I’m glad you didn’t limit yourself to a specific number

Penultimate!! The most important.
Brecht Evens would make my list easily as well with his innovative layouts and colors. Panther might be a top 10 comic for me. This is probably the most difficult list to narrow down on, but I love seeing your choices. If I had to pick my top 15 (listed in alphabetical order since I can't rank them): Charles Burns, Dan Clowes, Al Columbia, Richard Corben, Philippe Druillet, Brecht Evens, Jaime Hernandez, Jesse Jacobs, Suehiro Maruo, David Mazzucchelli, Mike Mignola, Moebius, Olivier Schrauwen, Jiro Taniguchi & Jim Woodring.

@@ArchibaldGurnsbach Most of the best Al Columbia is out of print unfortunately. I'm partial to "The Biologic Show" and "Pim & Francie". The Biologic Show will probably be hard to find at this point and Hollow Press is unlikely to reprint due to issues between them and Columbia, but Pim & Francie could be read digitally. I also really liked the short story in Zero Zero 4 called "I Was Killing When Killing Wasn't Cool" - that might be favorite Columbia piece. There are rumblings of a potential Al Columbia project with Fantagraphics, but it's unclear if it's a full book or just a short strip.

@@rickray1202 kramer's ergot 9 has a one and a two pager, both of which haunt me. pim and francie is outrageously overpriced but is available cheap in french... which i'm half-assedly trying to learn using french copies of manara's borgias and maruo's arashi. thanks for the tip.
Many great creators there and I am sure many more to come... One of my all time favorites for many reasons is the "rock star" of the medium, the amazing Paul Pope.
This is what I’ve been waiting for :) 👊
Thank you
🎶🎵...on the road again...🎵🎶.

I'm glad to see Gilbert made your list! (He's my #1.) I was watching a video review of Poison River, noting the differences between the serialized version and the collected version, and it got me thinking that Gilbert Hernandez as I know and love him really emerged from that time. Nothing wrong with Blood of Palomar and what came before, but I like where he went after that. And I like it all tremendously-up until 2016 and the last New Stories issue. With L&R IV, I stopped getting a sense that Gilbert wants to draw anymore. I like what he's been able to do in Blubber and Psychodrama Illustrated, but his magazine stories routinely fail to connect with me now. It's not going anywhere. I wish I could see it, but I don't seem to be able to. (I also wish I could edit his stuff, in case there's something that could be done.) Maybe I'm just stuck in my expectations, or suffering from the impatience of being a fan in real-time. Incidentally, that Blubber collection was missing some of the best stories from the comic, and the revised sequencing made no sense; it worked against some of the better running jokes. I make sure to buy the comics now, as they're the original texts, as far as I'm concerned. Scarlet by Starlight was the first Gilbert story I ever read, as part of New Stories #3 (with Jaime's The Love Bunglers). As twisted as it is, I really love it. Plus: He was still inking with a brush!

yeah, there you point out all the reasons why Gilbert is not higher in my list ... anymore... . some years ago he would rank very close to his brother (spoilers :) ). tbh I have Blubber in single issues as well, but haven't noticed that some stories are missing in the collection, have to re-check, thanks for your comment!
Just got the next few books of Terry and the Pirates (4,5,6) from Clover in the mail today! I love Gilbert Hernandez. His more recent work is pure id. I can never figure out which brother I like most between Gilbert & Jaime. Some days I’ll choose one, and then the other on other days.

hmm, what's the meaning of "id"?
@essaywhu
Жыл бұрын
@@earlgrey862 “According to Freud's psychoanalytic theory, the id is the primitive and instinctual part of the mind that contains sexual and aggressive drives and hidden memories, the super-ego operates as a moral conscience, and the ego is the realistic part that mediates between the desires of the id and the super-ego.” Another example: If you read Megg, Mogg & Owl, then Werewolf Jones represents Simon Hanselmann’s id.

yeah, okay, "Es, Ich und Über-ich", Es = Id... okay, of course that makes sense in terms of Gilbert and Hanselmann, not to speak of Johnny Ryan :)
in making my own lists i realize how tough this is. there are a lot of very fine cartoonists. now, where do we rank don heck?

yes, there's a reason why I waited more than 500 videos with this kind of stuff. Well I did videos about "the best of" certain years, genres and what not... but it's some different level when you try to cram almost everything into a few lists.
