    Hey everyone, this was a bit of a pain to get rendered, seriously can’t wait for Apple to release some M1 Max desktop’s so we can get an upgrade! Link to our extended latitude tests and some ISO tests are here - vimeo.com/679935881 I will be also uploading all of the port capped tests back to back in the same fashion when I am back in the office Wednesday. Will post links when uploaded, let us know what you think of the GH6 down below and thanks for watching! Jake

    Wow, thank you for your amazing analysis! This clearly involved a huge amount of work to produce. It is the most thorough review of the GH6 yet. It helped clarify for me as a humble g9 user that the GH6 is far more camera than I personally need (well at the moment anyway). The dream M43 camera for sits between the G9 and GH6 with proper phase detection or hybrid AF implemented. As someone who is aiming for YT content level content not Netflix, I would be hoping for a set of features which does not require a fan, does not require CFExpress cards and has unlimited recording. In some ways the OM1 might be closer to the sweet spot (or the G9 despite its limitations), but I am loving the image quality I am seeing from the GH6. It seems closer to FF in respect of its clarity and colour ‘richness’ / rendering than prior Lumix M43 cameras (with maybe GH5s being an exception). So this all leads me look forward to detailed reviews comparing the OM1 and GH6. Thank you again and we’ll done!

    Thanks for the excellent, detailed review. I'm generally pleased that Panasonic continued to develop the GH line, and think the GH6 is an excellent value for some, not all, shooters. I have the GH4, GH5, S1H and EVA1. I don't mind the AF issue as much as most. What concerns me more is that all the footage I've seen thus far has been muddy and contrasty. I think I've been spoiled by my S1H, and my days of MFT may be limited to gimbal work. That said, I would recommend the GH6 highly for anyone who has an investment in MFT lenses.

    M43 (micro four thirds) from Panasonic is my favorite behind the scenes camera with its optical image stabilization (OIS) zoom lens. Stabilization is stellar on my G85 and I even used it for a few production shots when too pressed for time for a tripod or gimbal setup. Great menus. Great ergonomics. Great pricing. My production camera weighs 13lbs w/ Arri Positive Lock (aka PL) lens so M43 w/OIS is super handy. Just don’t try panning w/OIS on for G85. It’s jerky. Otherwise, top notch. SLR Magic lenses if you need M43 fast glass on a budget w/sensor only stabilization. Look at G85 if G6 isn’t in your price range. M43 from Panasonic is a storytelling MACHINE! 🎬 Happy shooting!

    GREAT review! Thanks!! As nobody could tell me so far, I have a question. In photo mode and if you use the viewfinder, the image is slightly less sharp shown in the viewfinder than (after pressing the trigger and making the photo) in playback mode right after pressing the trigger. That makes it difficult for me to manually focus without the help of focus peaking or the magnifier. This has nothing to do with the diopter. And it is only the case in still mode, not in video mode. I wonder if this is the case with all GH6 or only with mine. Have you seen this on your test or could you check that if not?

    Jack and team at CVP thank you very much for this test. Looking at your latitude test here I can see two things. The GH6 has better latitude than the GH5S mostly due to the highlights. However without pixel peeping the latitude of the GH5M2 appear to be the same I would say -4 to +3. Why is that? If that was true the benefit of DRM is less than half stop as it can't be seen visually?

    Really great review. 🙂 GH6 has great DR, codecs and framerates, BGH1 has near same DR (13 stops) and excellent rolling shutter, but no screen nor IBS. But has box format. Panasonic needs to bring hybrid AF and would be the One.

    Do you think the difference in dynamic range between the S5 and the GH6 is big enough to justify a switch to someone already invested in MFT? I have 4-5 lenses already and I like the size/cost of the MFT lenses but I shoot a decent amount of photos as well as video so looking for a true hybrid option.

    The only reason that could prevent me from buying is the HDR bracketing settings called AEB. The GH4 shot brackets of 3,5, and 7 in increments of 1 EV or smaller. It needs to have steps of at least 2 EV for real estate. Could you tell me if the GH6 has AEB 5 @ 2EV??

  • @Veptis
    @Veptis2 жыл бұрын

    Timestamp for "accessories overview" seems incorrect. The sensor is exciting for being dual gain, but it not being stacked and still having the same focussing chances - it doesn't seem like that much of a flagship for MFT. It's also huge and heavy, which means you can get a larger sensor camera and get a similarly sized body. Perhaps we see G10 and GX10 models later this year for stills shooters. Perhaps there is a GH6S or BG2 coming in a year or so. I won't get either of them. Having the Anamorphic features (even for stills) would be the only selling point for me.

    Great review as always. How did you find the colour science in comparison with the bmpcc 4k & 6k cams? It's advertised as 12 stops but watching Gerald Undone's review he thinks it's closer to 10 stops & 11 stops with the boost on. Shame the native ISO is so high on the boosted mode. I've loved my GH5. It's been a great workhorse for run & gun but image quality is most important now. I've waited to see what the GH6 can do before deciding on going down the Black Magic route. Do you see the image quality an upgrade on the GH5 and more specifically, an upgrade or comparable to the BM's pocket cams?

  • @thatcherfreeman

    @thatcherfreeman

    2 жыл бұрын

    If you're mostly interested in dynamic range measurements, Gerald Undone uses the same methodology that CineD uses, and they've got dynamic range measurements for all the cameras you named in your comment. It's also worth keeping in mind that manufacturers typically report dynamic range by counting the number of patches in the test chart that are distinguishable from black, whereas Gerald and CineD count the number of patches in the test chart that exceed a certain signal to noise ratio, which will report a smaller number than the first method. Thats not to say that one of these methods is the "correct" way to measure DR, just that one is more pessimistic than the other.

  • @CVPTV

    Hey Avi, I would say the GH6 has better IBIS than the S5 and the S5 has better image quality than the GH6. The GH6 is a more fully featured camera, it will just depends if the improved functions and smaller lens options, outweigh the image quality difference. Jake

    I don't own any camera and I only use friends Sony A6000 from time to time. I watched so many camera reviews on KZread so I am familiar with some features of many cameras. But there's something so great with Panasonic camera videos. There's this combination of colors, DR and details that just produces great image, to me better than Fujifilm, Sony or Canon. This is true for almost all of the footage I saw on many channels so I think it means something. GH6 has this effect as well.

    I guess it depends what type of shoots you intend to use this camera for. I personally don't use auto focus all that often. And when I do it would just be to focus on someone's face during an interview then switch the autofocus off again once it's sharp. Though it is disappointing the autofocus isn't as good as the competition, not a deal breaker for me.

    Incredible review, thank you ! I always find it amazing how some engineer driven tech companies fail to realize their full potential by simply ignoring marketing requirements. The lack of trustworthy AFC will keep this wonderful camera from flying off the shelves, which is great because the price will drop quickly after the first wave of of Panny fans will have bought their copy, same as with the G9. People less in a hurry can prepare for an even better deal. I'll wait a few months, or at least I'll try :D

    Yes your right the price will drop significantly after a few months and the grey importers get stock. Im a full frame shooter but the 10 25 lens and M43 stabalisation has interested me. But the Sony/Canon AF of 2022 is just to good a feature to miss out on. The AF does look useable in certain less stressful scenarios tho.

    @@markshirley01 AF on GH6 seems to have similar behavior to my G9, albeit being better, it's still not reliable. And then you watch A7IV AF reviews with incredibly fast performance... DFD on GH6 is just way too slow even when it's spot on. And DFD doesn't like complex backgrounds.

I enjoyed my time with g9, but Sony is frame and forget. Here in China A73 is currently all the rage for video and stills since it can be had for significantly less than the successor.

  • @StirfriedGerman

    @Random Thought Japan and Korea like smaller kits because of average smaller body size. The gh6 is a heavy bulky camera though, the lens size difference barely compensates this compared to full frame. I do love the Ibis on panny so I might revisit with gh7 and pdaf. Until then 😎

    The AF is just killing me. As a Lumix owner since the GH3, I was looking forward to finally having a good m4/3 AF to not lug around the S-size body. It hurts so much that the DFD doesn't seem that much better than my GH5's for critical applications. I'm honestly debating whether I'll buy this body or wait for Panasonic to get proper AF in a gh7/gh6s (hopefully not in 2027)

    Thanks for this amazing comprehensive review! I don't understand that so many people are stating that m43 is dead and you should just go with a full frame camera. I mean sure, in many ways it's better. But it's also ALOT more expensive if you don't already own the right glass for it. This coming from someone who owns a GH5, with speedbooster and sigma 18-35 + 50-100 lenses. For me. It's just a matter of swapping bodies and I've got a major upgrade!

    @@KtmDesignz 2200 euro for a camera isnt cheap for sure. But it's a good deal compared with upgrading to a fullframe camera with a good set of lenses, that can easily go upwards of 7500 euro. I get what you're saying about it being an investment, and it just isn't worth it for my situation. "better get a bmpcc4k and a gimbal", nope I don't like the ergonomics and it doesn't have IBIS which I used all the time, also doesn't have 4:3 anamorphic mode. Also a gimbal is just terrible in terms of flexibility. I do own a gimbal but I barely use it.

    The GH6 is also an improvement to the GH5 in terms of photography performance. Now that might not be so important to professional videographers, but for people who can only afford one camera and a few lenses, this is a valid point. Unfortunately, it comes with a new version of the RW2 raw photo format which is not yet widely supported by software. (Yes, by Adobe software, but if you're not a pro photographer, you might not want to spend money on Adobe subscriptions. So you're left to using Adobe's free DNG converter.) When comparing latencies, it's easiest to use a video switcher such as the Blackmagic Atem Mini Pro. Plug a mic into the switcher and use the internal mike of the camera. Turn both audio inputs on in the switcher, hit record on the switcher and use the clapperboard. Make sure to have the same distance of all mics to the clapperboard. The audio from the camera will come in later, aligned with the HDMI delay. Open the video file in Audacity to extract the audio and measure the distance between the two spikes from the clapperboard (first one being directly from the switcher's external mic, second one from the camera's mic).

Or a GH 6 (2999€) with excellent features and well, some wait to get it finished as the GH5. System swap? Wait for the new G9 with "ok" video features.... I hate new camera releases....;)

    @Love First when i wrote that, I've since realized I didn't know what I was doing or talking about and I've learned so much since. Overall, the gh6 is a solid camera and I liked it, but I only used it for 6 or 7 video projects and 1 photography project. I have since switched to Sony and now have the fx30. I'm not the best to break it all down for you on the Gh6 bc I didn't have it long. I have more fun learning about Sony and have more fun actually using the fx30. Idk if that makes sense, but I find the experience more enjoyable. It's also been much better for my workflow. Idk what you need the gh6 for, but the autofucus is not reliable, so if that's something you're gonna use, don't buy this. It would help to know what you need it for.

    I think my biggest disappointment with the GH6 is the lack of All-i 422 10 bit at Open Gate. It's the one thing that would make it stand out, but without it it's an awkward camera that just sits inbetween competitors being a jack of all trades but a master of none. BM6K Pro is not very well suited for one-man handling, even with the tilting screen and all other features. GH6 is better when it comes to going alone to shoot something because it has ton of software and hardware features that can help you when filming alone. Except for the autofocus of course, but BM doesn't have autofocus too.

    i mean, the dynamic range of the s5 is really good. at the comparison with that guy near the color checker, s5 overexposed +4 looks really good, even better when compared to a7iv, and a lot better than gh6 i would say. also, i knew canon has less dynamic range, but i think even gh6 has better. r6 looked quite bad. so im surprised at s5 vs a7iv, s5 looks much better at +4 (i didnt pay attentive attention to all other values as comparison between cameras, but s5 is really nice). still, af is bad. s5 i think is a more well rounded camera, at least for a novice/intermediate. and i think it's considerable smaller and lighter than gh6, if i'm not mistaken... it's a good purchase (s5), but because af, i would say it's not worth buying new.
