The Panama Canal (Spanish: Canal de Panamá) is an artificial 82 km (51 mi) waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a conduit for maritime trade. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduces the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America via the Drake Passage or Strait of Magellan and the even less popular route through the Arctic Archipelago and the Bering Strait.
Canal locks at each end lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 m (85 ft) above sea level, and then lower the ships at the other end. The original locks are 32.5 m (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks was constructed between September 2007 and May 2016. The expanded canal began commercial operation on June 26, 2016. The new locks allow transit of larger, neo-Panamax ships, capable of handling more cargo.[1]
Colombia, France, and later the United States controlled the territory surrounding the canal during construction. France began work on the canal in 1881, but stopped because of engineering problems and a high worker mortality rate. The United States took over the project in 1904 and opened the canal on August 15, 1914. The US continued to control the canal and surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the 1977 Torrijos-Carter Treaties provided for handover to Panama. After a period of joint American-Panamanian control, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999. It is now managed and operated by the government-owned Panama Canal Authority.
It takes 11.38 hours to pass through the Panama Canal. The American Society of Civil Engineers has ranked the Panama Canal one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

We just were on the Island Princess through the canal in May. It was the first cruise in two years and was wonderful. What an experience going through all 6 locks in Panama.

excelente camarógrafo! , desde tierra se aprecia muy bien como llenan y desocupan las exclusas a medida que el barco avanza y la forma como hacen la tracción del barco a lo largo del canal. Gracias por mostrarnos otra forma de apreciar el paso por el canal.

We went through the old canal on a tour boat Nov 2018. We went through the new canal on the Caribbean Princess March 2020. Both were exciting and great experiences.

I remember in 1990 The Pacific Princess Coming thru the Canal after The Invasion of Panama, We Were Standing on Shore in Full Combat Gear, Gun Trucks and Weapons as the Ship Went by, We were just past the Locks in the Field in this Video.. Everyone was Waving and Cheering it was Quite a Sight..

I had the greatest pleasure of growing up in the fifties in the Canal Zone...... My folks moved there in '49 and left in 57....... Today, I still am in touch with my fellow classmates and have always considered my life in Panama as THE highlight....

The electric locomotives of the Panama Canal, better known as "mules" that we see on both sides of the ship, pull to tow and keep it aligned inside the lock and avoid chafing with the walls

@@bineetpradhan788 Just proud to be Panamanian. We are very aware of the operations in the Canal. In fact a Panamanian Captain (Panama Canal Pilot) is the one who assumes total control of the ship from the Atlantic or from the Pacific through the locks and Gatun Lake.

Yeah, but lets face facts...there wasn't exactly a lot of room for seagulls, was there?...and, as i live on the North Cornwall coast, the only good seagull is a dead seagull. Flying rat-scum, there should be a reward for every seagull killed....they are of no use whatever, and they hassle tourists, even stealing food from their hands...fair play, there are a lot of moronic tourists that feed the horrible fuckers....you can always tell someone from the midlands, or Manchester...they are the ones feeding the fuckers...maybe they have never seen birds before?...the sort of people who think that milk comes from the corner shop, never heard of cows...poor show from our politicians, should put more money into education, instead of wasting billions and billions of £'s building canals that are now obsolete, because the morons are building ships that are too wide!!!!! and so it goes on and on......take corona-virus....every government is putting cash before lives.....wow, now that's a fucking shock, isn't it ?!?!?!?...............

Disculpa mi observacion anterior, pero si puedes agregar un dialogo, seria estupendo. Como panameño navegue por el canal en dos ocasiones, conozco bien las riveras en ambas costas y hay mucha historia que la gente desconoce , hay mucho que contar de esa maravilla, desde sus inicios hasta hoy dia. Animate seria un video exitoso. Empieza con el Canal frances, los exitos sus fracasos , la entrada de los norteamericanos, el primer intento de ampliacion antes de la segunda guerra mundial, la ampliacion actual, los tres puentes construidos, el cuarto puente que empieza ahora pronto y el futuro inmeditato. Panama, el Hope de la Americas. Muchos te apoyariamos.

De acuerdo, he agregado algo de información a la descripción del video, pero no incluido como diálogo en el video. El video ha estado publicado durante más de un año, así que me temo que si lo estropeo, intento cambiar algo en él. Volveré a Panamá de nuevo, para pasar por las nuevas esclusas, una vez que la pandemia se haya desacelerado. Cuando cree ese video, agregaré la historia y más información sobre los canales. Gracias de nuevo por tu sugerencia.

You missed the most spectacular moment of the whole process which is filling and emptying the chambers. those shots were removed from the video

What was the idea keeping the widths of the canal do exact the ships width

When the canals were planned, ships were actually smaller in those days. In any case, most ships that have to use the canal are built to fit through the canal. Thanks for commenting!
