They do make the current world work but that’s not necessarily a good thing. Without such widespread global shipping I think people would ironically be more food secure and have stronger local economies. Not to mention there would be a lot less sweatshops and horrible working conditions for people working to produce goods for the developed nations. Not to mention more jobs in those nations.

Must have been miserable been around you, it doesn't seem that you enjoyed it, rather just endured it somehow. :-(. I loved my time at sea as 3rd and 2nd officer of the deck. Beautiful desolation of the open ocean, adventure of the storms, visiting foreign and faraway places...Some love this life, like me, lots of are unfortunately miserable.

When I was a kid in the 1960's we use to watch these ships from Japan come to the ports in Kalama via the Columbia River. My dad was stationed in Japan during WWII, so it was interesting for him. It is fun to see how long these ships had to sail to get there and home. Thank you!

This brings back some memories. Sailing through the straights of Juan de Fuca for hours and hours where it's as still as a sheet of glass and then greeted by monster waves the minute you hit the Pacific. Nothing better than spending days (or weeks) at sea and finally reaching land. That feeling you get when you finally set foot on soil again - so nice. And after weeks of heavy seas, the sea legs kick in so you end up walking goofy during the port visit.
