As is the power of nature and the simpler, more wholesome pleasures in life. If you look at and accept the world for how it is you'll see that everything is actually how it should be. At least as far as a reflection of the state of the world and its (pretty much eternal and unchanging on a mainstream level) values.

pan is a god whose nature was to be mischievous but his worship in rustic and wooded areas shows that he had no lust for power and glory. His attributes show that he is somehow related to Hermes. He also shows that judging a person by appearance is not the same as understanding that person and his nature

Doesn't it seem more likely that Pan would be a child of Gaia than any other god or goddess. Considering his closeness to nature, his humility and lack of power lust. It is known that he is a force to be reckoned with even among the titans which is possible Pan might be a younger brother of.

Peanut Live Well you are right in the sense that Gaia is a titan, but she is also a primordial god. Primordial gods being the bearers of the universe and the ones that started creation. All the primordial gods came from the void of chaos. I guess you could say they were the original gang of gods. So if we follow chronological order chaos gave birth to the original creators and beaters of the universe(primordials), the primordials gave birth to the Titans, the titans gave birth to the olympians, and so on. So you are both right and wrong. You could also make an argument that she is not a “god” but rather a primordial god.

The word Panic originates from the battle between Gauls and Greeks near Parnassos mountain. Nearby caves were making a hallow sound due to air passing through.Greeks where calling it "The Marriage of Pan". Also it happend to be misty and they couldn't see each other( the Gauls) and when they heard the sound from the caves they became frustrated, paniced. The word Pan+echos became Pan-ic.

Dear Kalina, I am glad that you are so interested in Pan and Arcadia! There are so many books written on the subject, since the ancient times, that this subject could be a university course!! However, regarding Pan I can recommend the following link, just for a general information. greekgodsandgoddesses.net/gods/pan/. If you are interested in ancient greek history, philosophy and civilisation, I have a group in facebook, in which we analyze these matters: facebook.com/groups/194954830692280/. The Arcadians were the oldest Greek-Pelasgian tribe in the greek peninsula! The ancient historians and philosophers are calling them "Προσέληνες"(Prosaelenaes)=Pre-mooners, meaning that they were living in the area even before the moon appeared in the sky.... I hope I have helped you a bit! Whatever you want to ask, please don't hesitate to do so!!

One of the few Greco-Roman gods who had animal/human features unlike Egyptian and Indian gods that often had animal features like Ganesh the elephant god and Thoth the Ibis headed god. "Pan" literally means 'all" as in Pan-American.This probably means he was a god of all nature. I think the Christian devil took some features from Pan such as the hooves. When Christianity took over the Roman Empire Pan is reported to have died and his death moans are supposed to have been heard from a ship sailing the Mediterranean Sea.

Michael Gallegos - One thing I'm grateful to Christianity for is the abolition of animal sacrifice as part of worship.Pagans sacrificed trillions of animals as part of their religious services by cutting their throats and blood spilling everwhere. Can you imagine going to church and the horrible killing of horses, pigs, goats, chickens and sheep being part of the celebrations with blood everywhere!Christianity was the first religion to argue for complete racial equality in the letters of St Paul.Modern western civililization was mainly created by the catholic church because the church structure filled in the gap when the civil structures collapsed as result of barbarian invasions etc.Modern freedoms evolved in Christian countries not in the polytheistic worlds.

True, but now a days you have civilized people who hunt for sport and only take the pelts and heads of the animals, and leave the rest for the birds, where the pagans would consume the meat after. As well, the way we keep animals in little boxes, before sending them through a very painful death, just so we can have clean hands when we go to the supermarket. The majority of meat is not cruelty free my friend.. At least before the sacrifice the animals were treated with respect and honor before sacrificing them to their gods. As for pagans not having a civilized structure. Please look into the women's rights in Norse history, very stunning and respectable; especially from pagans who sacrifice animals and people alike.

It just struck me while I was watching, that the similarities in the descriptive artistic portrayal of Pan are so similar to that of some of the Christian interpretations of Satan. Seeing as how the new Christian religion deemed all the old religions as pagan and blasphemous it would make sense that they would demonize one of the old gods or spirits...an ancient propaganda war as it were. Any credence to that, do you think?

olddogg eleventy2 yes. Since Pan was a quiet rustic god of the hills and villages, the Christian sect targeted him the most cruelly because he was simple and easy to understand and relate to, and beloved by country folk. They resisted the most stubbornly so the Christians vilified him the most. They gave the supposed Shaitan his features to scare new converts from him. Notice they didn’t do the same to his friend Dionysus?!

alus nova + You're right, they left the old wino alone! After all, the wine was an important part of their litany and one of the few things that the poor peasants had to sometimes alleviate their miseries. Good point!

alus nova, they didn't do the same to Dionysus, because Dionysus is basically Jesus, LOL. (The whole death-and-rebirth thing, wine rituals etc. Dionysian cults were *very* widespread during the late Hellenistic and early Christian period, and there's no doubt syncretism was going on. I think there are even early depictions of Jesus showing him with dionysian iconography.)

I thought hermaphroditus was a combination of the two that hermes and aphrodite loved one another so much that they joined in one body. that's where we get the word hermaprhodite, indicating one has both sexes.

I totally get the ambivilence over Pan being the son of Hermes or of Zeus. If you consider that Hermes represents the mind/soul, it begs the question whether nature has it's own mind, independent from God (or the creator God, Zeus) meaning that it is naturally occurring and needs no heavenly intervention in order to exit and grow, it just is. Compared with the idea of Zeus the creator that designed nature and set it all in motion. It's an on going debate that can never really fully be answered, and, as with all such questions, is very interesting. I love how he represents both the sweetness of nature through his music-making and the ferosicousness of it through his booming voice. That the archetype of the trickster God associates himself most with the God of wine and is superior to the other Gods in terms of valuing the more wholesome and all-round better things in life, I.E nature, simple pleasures and the ability to see through the vain pursuits of power and prestige certainly gives me a lot of food for thought....

I wonder if the Wood Elves king Orion from Warhammer Fantasy was inspired by Pan? He looks a lot like a Satyr except he was green and embodied only the wild and hunter aspects of Pan (due to being the avatar of the elven god of hunt and lord of the wild, Kurnous).
