When they were born theirmothwr said what a treasure.... their farther said yeah lets go burry them....their mother said what if they dig their way out?... we will burry them face down..
Remember in mythology one often has to realize that the literal and metaphor are interchangeable so pushing them back into Gaia’s womb is more or less the same as banishing them to Tartarus. Gaia is the embodiment of the earth and Oranos is the sky.
The Hecatonchires always makes me think of the prison the 3 Fury's imprisoned Kratos in, at the start of God of War: Ascension.
@Skellotronix

That's because it was one................
These could be seen as a metaphor for the "lower' classes. Each hecatonchire is a one-man mob of 50 people, unable to accomplish much of anything because the heads all disagree as to what the limbs should do, and they're consigned to the deepest pit of the Underworld because of their ugliness and disagreeable nature...but if treated with respect and given good leadership, they can move mountains and defeat their overlords and gain control over their own lives. It's really quite an inspiring legend, if seen in that way!

@abulgarianvoice8366

Yes, that's possible. I saw it as more of a metaphor for a single person and their many desires, thoughts, and actions. So until the person learns to control them maybe by being given a good and meaningful reason to do so (which is represented in the myth as being approached in the right way) he won't be able to do anything and will be a chaotic mess. It always pays off to view myths as direct and sensible representations of real world phenomena, I really think that that's the reason they were created, not at all as shallow superstition.

Bulgarian Lion's theory fits more with history, knowing that Greeks weren't deluded utopical commies.

547265626f72 Your comment makes ridiculously little sense. Are you implying that if a creature in Greek mythology represented class differences, that would mean that the Greeks were communists? That would have to be one of the most stupid things I've ever had the displeasure of reading.
@4f52
6 жыл бұрын
SpaghettiToaster Yeah, no one would write about class struggle in Ancient Greece other than a communist. And since Socialism didn't exist back then, fuck off.
This goes to show that a single person giving someone just a chance to be better can change a person's life forever

One of the many wonderful things about you is how deep you dig into all the old stories to find so many unusual and rare gods, creatures, etc, to tell us about! You are a count of knowledge for us all! Thank you yet again for giving me something new to learn about!
I love the hekatonkries out of all of the Greek "monsters" they are by far the coolest and most interesting (also damn that's one hell of a origin story)
I have heard of the Hunder Handers but this is the first hearing the three names thank you.
The heca is literally a contender for strongest monster in d and d. Hits you freaking 10 times a turn when it's a baby, up to 20 times as it gets bigger. This is insane given that each hit is like heracles with a flaming zweihander
I had not known of the three tasks, but aside from the titans unleashing them for a little bit nothing is new to me Keep up the good work
The ancients really had amazing imaginations. I love all this stuff man, what an awesome channel.
Isn't gaia's womb Tartarus because Gaia is the Earth so in a way both version are correct
@markkesseler8891
6 жыл бұрын
No. Tartarus is a primordial god, like Gaia. The Underworld was as far below Gaia as Uranus was above. Tartarus was deep within the Underworld. Tartarus was not part of Gaia, in the minds of the ancient Greeks.
@VanityOfEliCLee

It's actually both. Tartarus and Gaia are both gods AND places. I always just saw them as sentient places.

I love how that you emphasize that monstrosity can turn into productivity for more lofty purposes :)
Thank you for your videos! They are quite fascinating and your narration is engaging and absolutely brilliant. I am definitely a fan!
If nothing else, I thank you for pronouncing the name of these Titans so well, and for the simpler spelling. Yours is a sympathetic examination of these beings, which I now hesitate to call "monsters" because they were rehabilitated. I mentioned that I never liked Zeus, but here's another case of his shrewdness and fairness : he exploited these giants, but he kept his word to them and showed them respect. As your video ended, I still wondered if I could accept these beings positively: I'm wrestling with it. What your videos have forced me to do is recognize that these myths often make us confront aspects of this world that we don't want to see. Thank you.
I am Greek, I find your videos really amazing and enjoyable!! And I'm really imppressed that you know the word Hecatonchires.... in Greek there is no h at the begginning of this word . It is written Ecatonchires. The e is pronounced like the e at the beginning of the English word (every).
@PantakesVGP
6 жыл бұрын
smilycat3a the ancient greek pronunciation actually had the "h" sound in the beginning of many words, but it was lost through time, so us modern greeks do not know it.
@smilycat3a

There is no indication that in ancient Greek, there was an h at the beginning of the word (εκατο). English speakers follow the rules of Erasmus when they pronounce Greek words . Which are all wrong!! www.ellopos.net/elpenor/koinonia/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=86

I take it you're using what I call the "classical" pronunciation. In English, we've butchered the vowel sounds, so I'm thinking if we English speakers wanted to come close, a better phonetic version would be "AY-ka-tone-KEE-rayz" - which is why I've avoided and tripped over this name a whole year. I was not trying to correct you: your version is surely valid, and I see that the "ch" or "k" sound in the second stressed syllable is not stressed by a local speaker such as yourself. From where I sit, I would sound your version as "Ecca-toe-HYE-ress." So, I thank you for your comment: you forced me to break down my pronunciation - again - and I've veered away from the narrator's smooth pronunciation as a result.
Really nice presentation! Excellent summation of a fairly obscure part of Greek myth!
At least Kronos cared about the Hecatoncaries and tried to free them. Lol
@amortality999
3 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Kronos only wanted to crown himself ruler of the universe. Guess what Kronos did after defeating Uranus? He imprisoned them in Tartarus. The Zeus freed them in the Titanomachy and they helped Zeus fight the Titans.
Thanks for the info. You are appreciated for your time and effort.
Great stories! Love your work.

great art and narration. These stories really set the imagination on fire. Any ideas what these characters and events might symbolize? I'd really like to see a channel that compares Greek and Indian mythology (my uncle even compares Greek and Japanese), and that explores possible interpretations.
Hey bro, I thank you very much for the explanation on the Hekatonkheries* first heard about this being in God of War: Ascension.
Great video sir. That part about redemption in the end made me choke up a little; well done.
Thank you for the info. I'm using the concept to design a titan version of this guy.

It would be awesome if you could do the Aztec, Olmec or Native American gods sometime. That would be really cool to learn about. Thanks for your great videos, you do such a good job.

I love this! I always felt bad for them cuz I didn't hear about them escaping.
Cool video & pictures
I can't help but to hear and imagine a story of colliding planets with the hecatonchires being unshapened satellites with many protruding features that were reassimilated into a larger planet or thrown out into space.
Love it!
Thanks for the recognition, man.
Loved it.
Thank you for the history
Cool video bro
Good job mate
Thank you for posting these! I actually use them sometimes as references when it comes to my religion. It's how I discovered your channel actually! If I choose to work with a certain Goddess or God, I will look up videos and read things online to make sure I've gotten everything correct (because things kind of blur together when you worship 10+ deities) so thank you!
