Palpatine Explains his Plan to Darth Maul

Комедия

I've got a plan, Maul, I just need you to have a little faith!
The prequel plot is really silly and a bit confusing, so I put this video together to poke fun at how Palpatine somehow planned every event in Star Wars

Well even the movie seems to suggest that Anakin was. Surprise to Palpatine.. but a welcome one. The plagueis novel too. They're trying to maneuver Palpatine to the seat of Chancellor, and Qui Gonn just kinda happens to show up w this force sensitive kid. They learn more about him and the Chosen One thing right before Qui Ginn's death from Dooku who still communicates with members of the Jedi Council I'm ruining the joke but I thinks interesting stuff lmao

Not really. The events of the Sequels go exactly according to Palpatines plan up until his very last moment. The Imperial Remnant’s ‘First Order’ was to rebuild, rearm and restart the empire, and they became the First Order, named after that order. The first order destroyed the New Republic, invaded the Galaxy and began the war - destabilising the Galaxy, seizing complete although shaky control of the Galaxy (which was in a near constant state of civil war). Kylo killed Snoke, also part of Palpatines plan, proving himself a worthy replacement vessel for Sidious. After the First Order had control of the Galaxy and the Sith Fleet was complete, the final stage of Palpatines Grand Plan was to merge the First Order with the Sith Eternal, to create the Final Order. The Emperor’s Final Order is the final stage of his plan from the start, to rule a true Sith Empire: each world, and every being living on it, with a planet killing gun to their head. Complete unlimited power over life for every sentient being in the Galaxy.

This is what doomed the prequel trilogy and allowed the late, tacked-on, ridiculous concept of midiclorians.

@@blshouse Although I agree with your take on Lucas not listening to input the further he got into things, I think it's a stretch to say it was a bad movie saved by editing. As for the midichlorians, I saw it on a video about ten things in Star Wars that are older than you think (or a similar title) and I can personally confirm a couple of different entries on that list. Both the back story of Palpatine, and the duel by the side of a river of lava that left Anakin as crispy-fried, legless proto-Vader, are both chronicled in the Return of the Jedi novelization that I read as a kid in 1983. I was shocked to see that particular scene play out in ROTS all those years later, just as I had once read. Therefore, I believe the rest of the list does have some validity.

He was. The movies allow you to piece together his actual plan, and then you can see how they go ary, and he has to improvise to keep things on track. For example, in TPM, when the Jedi got involved, he immediately orders the invasion to begin ahead of schedule and the Jedi to be killed. When the Queen disappeared, he revealed Maul's existence and sent him to go get her and take her back to sign the treaty. On Coruscant, he personally tries to convince her, at several points, to accept Federation control. People think he's some omniscient planner, and the plot bends to his whims, when in actuality, he is constantly having to improvise on the fly as the Jedi constantly interfere.

I think my favorite overcomplicated plot point in Star Wars is Padme’s second assassination attempt. Basically, Chancellor Palpatine, told Count Dooku to assassinate a senator, who then told another guy to kill her, who then told another gal to kill her, who then told a flying droid to kill her, who then told a couple worms it pooped out to kill her. And all of this was so that someone could kill the worms at the last second, follow the droid back to the female bounty hunter until she gets killed by a really specific poison dart by the former bounty hunter, which would then be tracked back to a planet that Dooku had erased from the Jedi Archives years prior so that the Jedi could discover the clone army that was ordered by Dooku around the same time, the same army that would act as sleeper agents to genocide the entire Jedi order towards the end of the Clone Wars!

  • @gergodalanics8922

It makes sense though, you're just looking at it backwards. You have to consider the characters motivation, why and how are they doing what they're doing. Palpatine and Dooku just want Padme dead, because she's a major PITA, an obstacle for their plans. They don't care how it's done. The bounty hunters want the money obviously. Fett knows that assassinating a heavily guarded high profile person is risky and hires Zam to do the job, offers her a cut from the money and this way he stays out of sight, minimizing the risk. Zam knows the risks too so she keeps as much distance as possible. The droid and the worms are just basically tools. Fett keeps his eyes on Zam so when things go south he could silence her. Still his best chance since he knows that the origin of the dart is hard to track.

If Anakin didn’t catch Obi-Wan during his free fall, the Jedi may not have discovered the clone army. If Zam got away, the Jedi may not have discovered the clone army. If Jango Fett shot Zam with a blaster bolt instead of that really specific toxic dart, the Jedi may not have discovered the clone army. He didn't have to. As long as he could artificially create a war, the Jedi would be honour-bound to fight to defend the Republic (as he presented it). As soon as the Jedi joined the fight, they were doomed: Order 66 could have been invoked at almost any time and it would have worked. But with Anakin Skywalker involved, Palpatine wanted to hold off until he could persuade Anakin to join him. As soon as he did that, he executed Order 66. The Clone Wars were both a maneuver to gain political power (generate a crisis and then present himself as the only one who can put things right), and a giant galaxy-spanning trap to eliminate the Jedi Order. Not everything had to go exactly right: if the worst came to the worst, he could have just had Anakin killed along with the other Jedi - but he really didn't want to do that, so took several risks to bring him round - which paid off. All that was actually crucial for his original plan to succeed was that he be elected Supreme Chancellor, which he achieved in Episode 1. Everything else is just consolidation and cleanup. The Jedi were doomed at the Naboo peace parade: they just didn't know it.

@@sabershenanigans the only problem with all that is that the jedi would never get wiped out by clones of Jango Fett. He was good, but he was never good enough to beat a *competent* jedi knight (he wasn't even able to defeat Obi-Wan who is a clown among jedi). The jedi have the force as their ally, and the best non-force-using opponent can never match that. See how easily Windu dispatched Fett? It was a no-contest. My point being that the way Lucas wrote the destruction of the jedi was weak. It was supposed to be that Anakin turned into Vader and then helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the jedi. That would have been plausible. Revenge of the Sith was the film where Lucas really lost the handle on the ball. The ridiculous ease with which each jedi was killed just made no sense at all. Yet when they went for Yoda, he survived by killing the clone troopers *before* they had even attacked. This is noteworthy for two reasons. 1) If Yoda could use the force to attack before the clones did, so could the other jedi. Seeing things before they happen is, so we are told, a jedi trait. 2) Since Chewbacca and the other wookies were not privy to Yoda's foresight, they should have been shocked and outraged at Yoda apparently going mad in a moment and decapitating the friendly trooper.

  • @sabershenanigans

    @sabershenanigans

@@KeldorDAntrell I fear you overestimate just how powerful the Jedi are. Obi-Wan is far from "a clown among Jedi", he's literally the only one in the Order to have faced a Sith Lord and won (Yoda fought Dooku to a standstill but didn't actually win). And the Jedi aren't all-powerful: even in Episode I, when Anakin claims that "no-one can kill a Jedi", Qui-Gon all but states outright that that's far from the case. The Jedi are the equivalent of a cross between Shaolin monks and a United Nations peacekeeping force: capable of some very impressive stuff but not invincible and not actually properly equipped for a battlefield situation. And even during Episode II, before the Clone Wars even start, Mace Windu acknowledges that the Jedi connection to the Force has weakened as the Dark Side has grown stronger. Then there's the fact that the clones aren't acting with malice or deception: they're following orders right to the end. Yoda is a Master who happens to focus a LOT on feeling the Force, on sensing connections and empathically understanding events around him: we see him suffering as he senses the deaths of his fellow Jedi. And as for the Wookies? Watch the scene again: the clones point their weapons directly at Yoda before he moves (having guessed what's coming from his sensing what happened to his friends in the Order just seconds ago). He's not just going from, "I can trust these clones no matter what" to "they're going to kill me, I must act" - he's been suspicious about the army's origins since he found out about them, and he's able to put the pieces together before the order comes through to his group. And the clones themselves? Sure Jango Fett on his own wasn't good enough to take down a top-level Jedi in one-on-one combat (although he smoked a less-skilled Jedi effortlessly in the Geonosian arena, and might have escaped Windu if his jetpack hadn't malfunctioned - look closely and you see it misfire just before Mace Windu gets to him), but thousands of versions of him, armed to the teeth and with an outright extermination order? Maybe you're unfamiliar with military strategy, but when you have tremendous numbers of highly-trained fighters on one side, all armed with ranged weapons, and with a massive dose of the element of surprise, and just one or two guys on the other side, armed with a melee weapon and some mystical powers, only one side is winning that. Even Yoda and Obi-Wan had to run away rather than take on the thousands of troops they were stationed with. Let's not forget that nearly two hundred Jedi died on Geonosis to droids armed with blasters - droids! And if it hadn't been for Yoda and the clones, those droids could have taken out the remaining twenty or so in seconds. Numbers and weapons mean a lot in war, and Sidious knew this. The Force isn't a perfect system of attaining godlike power: it's something the Jedi train very hard to tap into just a miniscule fraction of its power. To see things before they happen, there generally has to be some level of clear intent or objective truth to tap into. When the clones turn on the Jedi, their thoughts probably barely change: one moment they're fighting the enemies of the Republic as defined by their Supreme Commander, the next they're... still fighting the enemies of the Republic as defined by their Supreme Commander. Most of those Jedi died without ever knowing what had happened. The ones who were strong enough in the Force to see it coming had time to draw their sabers... and were then cut down in short order, because there's a limit to what you can do with a lightsaber against thousands of enemies armed with blasters. (Consider that in Episode I, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan hide and run to avoid taking on the droid army - precisely because they know their limits in that regard). The Jedi aren't your perfect power-fantasy. They're a flawed organisation (flawed in the sense of being institutionally dogmatic, arrogant and complacent), made up of powerful, but not ALL-powerful, individuals. And those individuals can die.

Get a replacement in Dooku, since he was already falling to the dark side, and start grooming the kid you feel is obviously strong in the force, like Maul was. Clone Army discovered? Destabilize the galactic republic by pitting them against the trade federation using the existing animosity between planets, take power as leader of one side of the war, prep a clone army with a trigger word in secret for the republic to use against the Separatist and finally use the events of the war to corrupt the Jedi and enforce distrust against them among the public to justify the whole thing. Most of the plot we see in the movies isn’t part of Palpatine’s plan but things going off script he was just skilled and patient enough to turn those moments to his benefit. He has schemes on top of schemes to achieve his goals if one or two of them fall through than it’s no big deal.

Palpatine did not know about Jedi interfering with Trade Federation plans. Which is why he was so quick to pressure Neimodians into invasion before Jedi could force the issue out of his control. Palpatine wanted to manufacture a chrisis to 1) demonstrate everyone how weak Valorum's leadership and galactic security was, and 2) collect sympathy votes to prepare for his own bid for chancellorship. Queen was never supposed to escape and not sign the treaty, she and Naboo entire was supposed to be a martyr while Palpatine could play the hero in Coruscant. But Palpatine was able to adapt to the situation. Eventually, Queen's own plea to the senate was much more effective than Palpatine realized. Anakin was neither something Palpatine foresaw or expected, and only noticed after the Battle of Naboo as potential future asset. Phantom Menace is Palpatine essentially adapting his plan on the fly after the treaty plan failed.

I think when you look at the Prequels, it becomes increasingly clear that Palpatine basically won as soon as he became Supreme Chancellor. Everything else follows from there. Exactly HOW he becomes Supreme Chancellor doesn't matter: so long as he wins the vote. So his plan isn't really contingent on much: he just needs Chancellor Valorum to be voted out and him to win the job. That's it. Whether the Queen of Naboo lives or dies, whether they visit Tatooine, whether Anakin is discovered or not - all of that matters not at all to his overall plan. Of course, as soon as he meets Anakin Skywalker, he's open to a side-quest to get the most powerful Force-user on his side, and he jumps at the chance, befriending him early on and grooming him to reject Jedi philosophy (which, to be fair, is very dogmatic and deeply flawed in itself). Palpatine is a mastermind, and that means adapting to new developments and opportunities as they occur.

When I watched these movies and tried to work out what the evil masterplan actually was, I always assumed that Palpatine didn't sweat any details. "-But lord, if you tell the trade federations to kill the jedis, won't that upset your plan, if they, you know ... succeed? -What, those bozos? No, they'll fail, the jedis will escape and get back to the Senate with the news. -How master? How will they escape? -How should I know? They'll stumble on a forgotten fighter ship or get accidentally swallowed by a big fish or something. They'll use the Force." Palpatine sets up a lot of moving pieces, where the general idea is to play all sides against each other, get a civil war going, and get the jedi order deeply involved in that warfare. Talanted but sketchy kid? - Cultivate him, he might come in useful. Who are going to be actually fighting this war, since the galaxy has been at peace for a millennium? - Well, the droid makers can probably whip something up, and ... you know what, might as well place an order for a big batch of drone soldiers; use that talented bounty hunter we picked up last year. As any good force user he relies on his precognitive intuition to maneuver all the moving pieces successfully, but he's working with moving political parts rather than an asteroid belt. Still a very funny video, Cheers

Anakin wasn't created by Palpatine and Plagueis, he was created by the force. They didn't even know about him until Palpatine had already met Anakin on Coruscant. If you want to ignore the novels and just go by the movies, Qui-Gon tells the Jedi Council that he believes that Anakin may have been conceived by the Force. Mace then confirms that belief would indicate that he is the chosen one that would bring balance to the Force. Lucas has confirmed that the prophecy was true and that Anakin was the chosen one. This would then also confirm that he was indeed conceived by the Force. The only evidence otherwise is that there was an original idea for Sidious/Plagueis to be involved, but it wasn't used. Then in Episode 3, Palpatine alludes to the ability to manipulate the Force into creating life, but there's no evidence that he or Plagueis actually succeeded in this.

Yes, the script for all 3 prequels was written by an eight-year-old.

Ok so I get its a long running thing of people not paying attention to the film but: Palpatines plan was not to get Padme to start a vote of no confidence. The plan was that she would be forced to sign a treaty to say the war is legal (and thus the trade federation cant have shit done to them). This makes the counciller look like a useless shithead, and gives favour to Palpatine based on him being from Naboo, which then lets him become Councillor as planned. Everything else that happens in Phantom Menace is him trying to salvage a win out of the situation. There is absolutely no implication at any point in the prequels that he planned everything that happens to a T, outside the implication that Palpatine fathered Anakin in Revenge of the Sith in the original draft. Which tbf, was cut out of the film and makes basically no sense anyway. It makes far, far more sense that Palpatine simply saw the super kid and took advantage of the situation. Jar Jar doesn't need to specifically be the one who gives him emergency powers. And regardless if you think that plotlines absurd, its literally a direct reference to the Nazis and that literally happened. The plan is literally, manipulate a situation in order to get power by highlighting how bought by the corporations Valorum is. Lead that crisis into a later civil war and use contacts to provide the means to defeat the civil war, and justify the conflict to give self emergency powers. Make the jedi spread out across the galaxy as generals to this army, then use said army to wipe out the Jedi once the problem is dealt with and justify taking over the Republic by saying they tried to assassinate Palps. Or possibly just leak that info to someone like Anakin so they try to assassinate him and rely on being a badass to survive. It is a direct reference to the Nazis, Julius Caesers takover of the Roman Republic, and a little original stuff for the setting.

Honestly, it reflects a lot better on Sidious if he just winged it the entire time and completely succeeded than if he had a convoluted plan that just so happened to work perfectly. In the first case, he's a master of seizing opportunities and taking action, and in the second he's some nerd with a plot-armored plan.

Honestly this scene in the movie, to me, is actually one of those scenes that was created just for the previews. Also, every single star wars movie to me feels like, a whole lot was cut out in between scenes, like they should all be six hours long each

The thing is everything doesn't actually go to Palpatines plan, he was just really good at rolling with the punches and having backup plans.

This needs a line where Palpatine says, "And then Dooku becomes my apprentice." Maul repeats his line, "But I thought I was your apprentice."
