YamboBodoni Innovation is not the proper translation. Also, innovation does not pertain to engineering and science, it speaks of religion. Every innovation of the religion from what God Has sent in perfection is an imperfection/misguidance. If the religion is complete, perfect and solid from the get go; then innovation cannot make it better, only worse. If religion was man-made then innovation would be good; but because this religion is from God, innovation can only be a detriment.

So is the case in more muslim majority countries that are not truly secular. There is double standard. I empathise and feel compassion with what the palestinian go through, but because of my own experiences, i can not support a palestinian islamic state. It has to be secular. Otherwise, you have replaced one problem with another problem .. instead of discrimination of palestinian, which i truly recognise, it will be replaced by discrimination of non-muslims like malaysia, pakistan, brunei, mecca, etc

A secular state works best when the citizens come from different religions or background like Levant countries. I think it would solve their problems ( political instability, religious strife and oppression) it would liberate religion rather than oppress it as one might think. Those in power are just using religion to their greedy means and ulterior motives and in the process they are tainting it and pushing people away from it. Most people now who are against religion argue that its the bane of all problems in the world. Religion taught or emphasized good ethics and morality, compassion and humanity. It is beautiful But it only causes problems and gets ugly when its mixed with politics and power, because people in power misuse it.

Also, it's not just a military exemption; it's also an exemption from paying taxes to help the poor. The jizya was instituted as more or less a compensatory measure. Also, there is no point in empirical history where non-Muslims were barred from owning weapons, so that's not true. Muslim rule allowed general legal and religious autonomy for minorities, but they were still subjects under the law and therefore obligated to pay some form of tax. That was a Jizya. From a western, individualistic perspective, a religious tax is payed voluntary, because religion is a choice (versus race, for example). If non-muslims are obligated to pay a separate tax *by the government* this is unequality. Question, do the Zakat and the Jizya end up at the same amount?

If the government is suppose to be Islamic then both Jizya and Zakat should be obligatory so everyone is paying eventually. As for the amount, I could'nt find enough info about Jizya as no islamic country right now is implementing it but for Zakat it's 2.5% of the annual income of an adult. Jizya amount should be close to that but there's no fixed rate.

They’re banned from buying alcohol due to “islam” on the ID and Muslims cannot opt out of Islam or convert to another religion even if they converted to Islam. For non Muslims they’re discriminated due to the education system giving bumiputera special privileges, even with the purchase of land and properties, it’s easier and cheaper for bumiputera, if ur non bumi and you want to lead a state or even a country it’s a long shot unless you’re in Penang. And no, LGE or Anthony Loke wont have a chance to be PM due to their race

I see that Arabs and non-Arabs don't understand the purpose of JIZYAH at all. Under the old Ottoman empire, Jizyah was required for non-muslims for "protection" as they say. This is because the Ottoman soldiers were often at war, whether it was expansionary or defensive. Non-muslims DID NOT HAVE TO PARTICIPATE in combat roles, so as compensation, they had to give something else in return. This was JIZYAH. But that would be irrelevant under a Palestianian State because Christians and Muslims would defend it all the same.

If i was running Israel, i'd make non-jews (e.g Arabs) pay JIZYAH myself. Non-jews are not compelled to military duties, so in return, if they paid Jizyah (or some form of additional tax), it would be fair to all. Since Arab Israelis have the same passport and rights, they should give something in exchange for the protection of IDF soldiers & security officers. You Israelis could benefit from this. (Arabs could benefit to, it might encourage more of them to participate in IDF/military service for their own good. Serving together in the military can help build bridges between all of you)

The problem is Israel is surrounded by Arab/Islamic countries. With a percentage of Islamic Jihadist groups salivating at the chance to destroy it. Just look at whats going on in syria. If it was not Jewish it would cease to exist. By the way being Jewish is an ethnicity; just like being italian or french or arab; its a bloodline. 20% of Israel is not jewish, that is a very large number compare it to its neighboring countries. Another fact is 10,000 palestineans applied for israeli citizenship just last year; going against their government; this was considered tyranical. The palestineans understand that Israel is not out to kill them. Look, i'm not saying israel is perfect but it has tried to make peace several times with the palastineans and their arab leaders always refuse.

One of the reasons many fear Muslims and bully Muslims is because Muslims want a caliphate , many people are more encouraged to help Palestinians when they see they want to live according to the 21st century and keep their religion personal rather then force it by the government ! Also you want people to live your way ? People actually wanted to help Palestinians when they heard they want secularism the second people hear Muslims want a secular state ,nobody wants them in the west or to even give them their own countries ! Also many Muslims are liberal and want religion away from politics , they want democracy and freedom !!! Why should anyone help Palestinians if they want A forceful Islamic caliphate ? What about the Freedom of the people ? Theocracies will be labeled as human rights violation countries and nobody ever shows any mercy to many Muslims like mayanmar,Syria even Palestine because they say why should we if they don't want to live in peace and normally like everyone else but rather want don't want freedom or democracy ,be different then everyone else and force religion through the state and punish Muslims ,And non Muslims !

Ummmm, I think the producer misunderstands the concept of jizyah in Islam. When a nation/country/state is ruled by a Muslim government, and therefore have laws, build and repair roads, are responsible for uplifting the economy etc, and also have an army to protect the entire nation, if there are non-Muslim citizens living in the country, they pay a tax for all of those services, especially for the protection of any outside military attacks on its citizens. Muslims in that land pay zakat, and probably govenrment fees for services also. There are so many nice examples of people of other faiths living in Muslim lands throughout history and they all lived in peace. Also, this is similar to how we pay tax in the country we live today in exchange for good quality of life and govt services .

While I don't mind paying taxes, I mind paying them on a discriminatory tax status. And Zakat is fixed above a certain income. Jizyah is at the disgression of the ruler. It also cements that they are not equal to Muslims - after all, how far can non-muslims come up the ranks of power in an Islamic state. Your examples are those of a submissive subpopulace that was left alone. It wasn't an idyllic "and they lived happily ever after". Today, we are further than this and share nations regardless of religion and all pay the same taxes regardless of religion.

You question is a bit odd - surely a state could be Arab and secular, or Muslim and non-Arab? I hope that the reason that many didn't want a secular state is based on a misinterpretation. There are two kinds of secularism, the English and the French model. The English model is that the state keeps its nose out of religion and everyone can do as they wish as long as it doesn't break a law - religion is protected from the state. The French model is that everyone must act the same, religion is suppressed and allowed only a very limited role to prevent it getting power over the state - this is the French model. In the US and other English-speaking places we use the English model, but the Palestinians are probably more familiar with the French model, which is the one Turkey follows. That is what I see in some of the answers - people are afraid they wouldn't be allowed to be religious, wear a veil, etc. in a secular state.

allow me to clear up the jizya issue, since it is only fair that western non-muslims should know before perceiving it as a hostile/regressive taxation on non muslims. Hypothetically in a theocracy, muslims every year pay an percentage of their assets as Zakat(charity) 2.5-3%. Jizya, similarly back in the the days was the state taxes for non muslims as they were not obligated to pay zakat and usually they percentage of jizya was lower than that of zakat. As of the 21st century, if im not wrong even theocracies dont have the jizya system in place anymore, even KSA and Iran. Citizens of these countries muslims and non both pay state taxes with the addition of muslims paying the zakat. As for the jizya system itself, it was a thing that worked back in those days, instead of forced conversions or exile ir POWs, it provided an alternative for a multi cultural, religious and pluralistic society. It was less of "protection money" more about state treasury and redistribution of income. Dhimmis means protected people, dhimmitude means people entrusted on to us not 2nd class citizens, like alot of them would like to portray as... In Fact it was the lack of dhimmitude and jizya that lead the berbers and moors to be exiled from Spain, cause of the conversion or declared heretics. Maybe with the exception of IS in Iraq, Jizya is a thing of the past in most Muslim Majority States and Islamic Theocracies.

Frankly, governments have evolved a lot since 7th century. Can't just have a ruler and a few courts and some guys in the military anymore. Either way, I would not be interested in a state that treats me less just because of my religious beliefs. You have your right to worship and I have mine. As long as we both respect each other's belief we will be fine. But it doesn't work when a society is organised according to the religious beliefs of one group. Not talking about weekends or so. But law and justice.

I think the problem here is, other than the weak translation (from the guy, especially), there are a couple of fundamental misunderstandings going on: 1- A lot of people think "secular" means atheist. 2- The people answering mean "Arab, Islamic State" in the same way Israel means "Jewish State." Not that the law will be Shariah Law, but that the identity of the state will be as such. This is how most of the neighboring states define themselves, as well, and none of them apply Shariah Law on a wide scale (similar to Israel and Palestine, today, it is limited to marriage/family law and inheritance law). Do I agree with them? Additionally, the state can be "Arab" in nature, without necessarily being Islamic. Anyway, I disagree with them on it being a necessity but that's largely what they mean. While Corey's follow up question on jizya seems to be to clarify what they mean, people either don't understand it or it is just theoretical to them. There isn't a single country in the world that applies jizya today, including the ones that do claim to apply Shariah. So, it certainly wouldn't happen in the more "liberal" and multi-religious Palestine. Finally, one or more people claimed that non-Muslims would live under Islamic Law, but that isn't really true. The "equality" under the law also implies that they are able to live under their own religious laws, in Islamic jurisprudence-though no states today do that either.
