Palestine Talks | Dr Harriet Fraad

Political theorist and psychotherapist Dr Harriet Fraad talks about how growing support for Palestine in America among young people reflects their own disenchantment with the socioeconomic conditions of their life and the disappearance of the “American Dream”, as well as the possibility of building healthy relationships and community within pro-Palestinian movements more broadly - in contrast to the hyperindividualism of the West that has left many feeling alienated, lonely and depressed.

This huge outpouring of support is highly due to the Internet. No matter what the propaganda machine tells us we can see what's really taking place with our own eyes.

Things were moving in that direction after the Iraq War, and the internet helped young people access alternative news. And the explosion of news on KZread, Instagram, Tik Tok. Israel could kill easily and their friends in the American media would cover for them much better than now.

Interesting. Bc it seems like most of you have no God forsaken idea what you're talking about. As Bill Maher said, if the most important thing in your life is something you didn't know or care about 6 months ago, you're prob being disingenuous. Parroting words you don't understand like 'genocide' and 'intifada' to defend literal terrorists for massacreing jews don't make you brave... they make you depraved. And cry all you want - this is *deeply* rooted in antisemitism. If you cared at all for gazans, you'd be outraged at hamas for causing them endless harm.

Another big change is happening. Yes, true antisemitism is a crime. But to accuse someone that voices legitimate criticism, as being an anti-Semite is defamation. Defamation is also a crime.

Interesting insights that account for young people's support for Palestine, notably their identification with the dispossessed, their lack of hope for a secure future. This may account partly. However, she misses one key quality of these young people: many protesters are students at ivy leagur universities: very bright kids. Not yet invested in 'the system' they're reacting to the hypocrisy, injustice, and racism all evident in the treatment of Palestinians and the impotence of Western leaders. Stuff we usually study, now happening in our face. 13:54

Unfortunately, the press manipulates everything. They built a castle that a long time ago people notice is made by sand. I wish I hadn’t lost my time with self named “professor” that sound more as an old car sale person. I feel happy to have watched this video with this real Professor and professional. Isolation sounds very communist to me. Anyway , Americans never perceived all their contradictions. But not all. Thank you to remind me that in U.S there are sane and wonderful human beings .

As a good side effect of the open discussion of this war in the Internet, is that people don’t let others silence them again with the word antisemitism. True anti-Semitism is a crime but to use it just criminalize legitimate critical voices is defamation. Defamation is also a crime.

Excellent interview! What an insightful, wise lady! I agree with 100% of her observations. As I see it, we have major social, economic & political concerns ... & unfortunately each one seems to be scratching the other. Our world leaders have lost their moral compass & exchanged it for greed. The world certainly has changed since my day. I fear for my grandchildren. At 71 years, I'm glad that I won't have to live in it for too much longer because I neither understand, nor like what I see. AI concerns me as the internet has already changed our society to such a degree that we're becoming insular as people, not just as a community, as Dr Fraad suggested the USA was 50 years ago. Australia was probably even more insular than the USA that long ago, but we were a sporting, or at last an outdoor, beach & BBQ loving nation in those days. Television was the beginning of the change, then came the internet. It seems to me that children nowadays seem to prefer to be hidden in their bedrooms with their computer games than spending time with their parents as a family. Until families begin to 'spend time' instead of 'spending money' on homes 'needing' .... 2+ bathrooms, a couple of separate living areas & a media room, where children now 'need' their own bedrooms instead of sharing with 1 or 2 siblings, or even 3 children sharing one bedroom with bunk-beds, where a dishwasher instead of washing up by hand, where they 'need' separate cars or 4WD people movers, instead of using public transport, a bicycle, or walking, every child needs a mobile phone & computer, as well as the internet & mobile phone plans & expects to buy bottled water instead of a tap, or a filter on the tap, when people 'need' to buy expensive coffees when out, or dining out, relying on take-aways, or ordering food in as opposed to making a home cooked meal with raw ingredients, and then 'needing' the latest 'brand'/label fashion item ... and we have a total societal shift ... so that both parents don't have to go out to work or they can reduce their working hours to provide a better family life/work balance & 'spend' on quality Time as a family... the 'family unit' will disintegrate even more than it is already. I don't think we've ever had such high numbers of juvenile crime, burglaries, bashings of elderly, car thefts, road rage, or youth suicides, family violence, domestic violence & deaths from domestic violence by men, as we seem to have these days. People have become so disconnected with one another, as they've connected to the internet, and they've lost the art of socialising, and just of basic communication. I honestly don't know how society will change as more people begin working from home, if that will be a good thing for the family, if it will become an added stress in the home. I also wonder what effect AI will have on work, if people will cut down on their living costs, or if they'll choose to work more jobs in order to continue down the consumerism road. However, the one thing I do know is that something is going to change. Global politics can't continue as it has been either. The rich are becoming richer, the middle class is getting poorer, and the poor can barely survive as it is. We've seen what happened in the Russian Revolution, the French Revolution, the American Revolution ... and with all of the wars instigated by the 1% for their own greed, that are currently simmering, there won't need to be too much for there to be another world war! There will have to be either a meeting of minds or there'll be a meeting of weapons... and weapons have a shelf life ... & the elite continue to ignite wars around the world to keep their factories in business. They don't care who or how many bodies they leave in their wake. The greedy 1% (mainly the USA), have been instigating these wars to increase the demand for their weapons & weapons have shelf lives. They need to keep their factories busy, so they feed their weapons around the globe, but they don't know when enough is enough. The heat of the pressure cooker is building. The West created this pressure cooker between the Ukraine & Russia purely to feed their American weapons into that area, but they don't know how to get out ... & Putin won't back down; they've also been supporting Israel in order to pour their weapons into Gaza, which will soon become the whole of the Middle East when Netanyahu 'goes rogue' & bombs the Palestinians in Raffa. This will bring Iran, Lebanon & possibly the rest of the Middle East into the conflict; and now they're goading the Chinese into taking back Taiwan, but thankfully the Chinese are patient & won't strike until they are ready! However, just as the Palestinians could only take so much oppression for so long, and then the pressure cooker exploded ... so too our society can't keep going the way it is without there either being a 'chosen' reset, or an enforced reset ... but a reset there will be. My concern is that we now have nuclear weapons when we didn't have them before.

He predated George Floyde and BLM by a couple of years and his murder was shocking beyond words--"I can't breathe" were Garners last words which would later be repeated by Floyde.

Young adults in any country need not look to other adults to understand injustice or trauma: 18 years of lacking any rights or privileges as well as the child abuse most of us have endured is more than enough. I would hope a psychotherapist would be moved to point this out, but Fraad skipped right over it. I recall being at a demonstration in San Francisco in the 1990s about the horrors of U.S. intervention in El Salvador when I was overcome by despair that I later realized was identification with Salvadorans. While I was not bombed as a child, I was horrifically neglected (medically and emotionally), and was then blamed by my mother for my resulting, quite serious problems. That identification was quite apt, and we should encourage more young people to understand that the terrible indignities of growing up under the thumb of an industrial school system and, in general, adults who are more likely than not to be wack jobs, gives them a great deal in common with people like the Palestinians. Too bad Fraad missed an opportunity to call for humanizing the treatment of children.

Zuheir MohsenIn one of the PLO leaders in a March 1977 interview with the Dutch newspaper Trouw he stated that "between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese there are no differences. We are all part of one people, the Arab nation [...] Just for political reasons we carefully underwrite our Palestinian identity. Because it is of national interest for the Arabs to advocate the existence of Palestinians to balance Zionism. Yes, the existence of a separate Palestinian identity exists only for tactical reasons"

We now have a stimulation with two almost opposing sources of news and information. The younger generations are tied to their smartphones and various social media platforms, while the older generations still rely on Walter Cronkite and the 6 o’clock news.

Great interview subject and guest. I'd like to venture some unsolicited technical observations: the host claims he's decided to "interview the guest in person this time"... Now, obviously, the money has gone to insuring decent camera work and lighting, but somehow, the host has kept the professional LAV mic for himself and hasn't bothered to favor giving it-or giving one-to the guest whose opinion and words are presumably the main topic; her voice is recorded in what sounds like scratch audio... The guest should have the good sound, if there's a mic shortage, considering this is "in person". As an aside, the host might benefit from rehearsing his questions in order to limit the uncomfortable anemic delivery which is seemingly also unsettling the guest if one is to believe her expression during the cutaways. I realize these words will irritate some people in this comment section but perhaps it will be seen as constructive criticism where it matters, since the point is to make these broadcasts as effective as possible as many people wish to share these with the aim of appealing to the uncommitted. Peace out.

What Should Israel Do Next in Light of Their Declaration of War? First, we should reflect deeply upon the painful divide that has festered among us, causing the devastating toll of hundreds of lives lost and thousands wounded. We need to yearn for a major change and wholeheartedly unite as one. Only the bonds of unity can shield us from future tragedy and elevate our nation from the abyss of despair. We cannot afford to nurse bitterness or delay action, waiting for the war's end to ponder our fractured state. Now is the time for introspection. We need to pinpoint the reasons behind our present circumstances and act accordingly. Our quest for understanding needs to extend to our lives’ very source: the upper force of love, bestowal and connection that acts on us beyond our current level of awareness, which perceives through an egoistic and divisive lens. It is no matter of religion, but a realization that reality’s governing force is singular, and we accordingly need to stand united before it as one. Precisely in our trying times, we are in need for an expansion of consciousness to let the upper force of love and bestowal into our lives. We need to raise the pain and anguish that erupts in so many people in such times to the upper force, and wish for it to mend our torn relations, and draw us closer together. We must seek to hold each other close to our hearts, not solely in times of war, but as an enduring duty. We are a nation established not on a biological foundation, but on a spiritual-ideological one: "Love your neighbor as yourself." That is, we were people from all around ancient Babylon who felt a problem with living our lives solely according to competitive-materialistic ideals and sought for a higher truth to our existence, which we revealed as a higher force of love, bestowal and connection that united us above our divisive drives. That is why we cannot remain divided without suffering from our separation. Our mission to unite above our divisions is constant, because divisive egoistic desires constantly surface within us, driving us apart. Therefore, much like a diligent student who finds new homework awaiting them each day, we should not accumulate any more overdue assignments that end up exploding in our faces, pressuring us into critical situations such as the one we now find before us. Instead, we should hurry up and correct our hearts to favor unity “as one man with one heart” above our divisions.
