Excellent. Is there a reason why gouache is used instead of watercolour white Julia?

Fabulous tip video Julia. I love all your videos:) I have been studying with a few botanical artists online and through books and your style of painting resonates with me very much. You artwork is amazing! I am still very much a beginner but improving all the time. I just bought and watched your leaves video. I loved it and found it most helpful but you do not mention what brand of paper and brushes you recommend. I'm curious what you preferred choice is. Thank you, Carla

Hello Carla. Thank you for your kind comments about my work and videos. As for equipment I like sable brushes that have a good point. Winsor and Newton have a good reputation but are rather pricey. Billy Showell has some lovely brushes too. For me, I like a larger brush eg size 4 as long as it has a good point. I have also found cheaper brushes that worked well, such as you will see me using in the Leaves video, but the art suppliers has sadly stopped making them) As for paper, I use hotpressed paper (HP) and I like Arches but know this is not to everyones liking. I have been switching to Fabriano Artistico but they have recently changed their 'recipe' and the new paper is horrid to use. So no easy answer really as it is such a personal choice! Best Wishes with your painting.

Thank you Julia:) I appreciate you taking the time to answer me. I have Billy Showell, Anna Mason and Rosemary and Co brushes and have been using Arches HP paper because I had read about the problems with Fabriano Artistico and did not buy it. I do find doing some of Billy's techniques difficult using the Arches but your techniques work just fine on it. I'm glad to hear that it is currently your paper of choice. Warm regards, Carla
