Painting Veteran Afrika Korps for Bolt Action [How I Paint Things]

Ойындар

Faded uniforms and battered gear - nothing says 'veteran unit' like a bunch of guys who look like they've seen long days and even longer campaigns.
Grab your own box of Afrika Korps from Warlord Games from the following international storefronts:
UK: store.warlordgames.com/produc...
EU: eu.warlordgames.com/products/...
US & Rest of World: us.warlordgames.com/products/...
While it might seem like doubling up on effort to repeat older videos, it's been a few years now since originally tackling the Afrika Korps and while my methods might have remained fairly similar, there's a handful of new paints and other tricks which can provide even easier or more reliable results. Some of these classics are due a revisit! These 'remasters' won't be common, but might show up occasionally for useful topics or where new methods and materials have made them much easier.

    The green uniform was used for a very short time basically the first wave which landed in March 1941 had it & was phased out by early 42 with the sun hats. It was replaced with a "yellow-brown" uniform which was made in Italy as it was better suited to the climate & more accessible. I have found Army paint's desert yellow with a wash of soft tone quick shade replicates the colour very well for 42-43 uniforms. Over all they model looks great & I love the chipped helmet.

    Fun video, painting Afrika Corps' uniforms had always been a little tricky, they used also italians' gear or British equipments from captured depots. In the desert the colours faded very swiftly, and after some time they became almost all equals.

    Sometimes I'm surprised by how much you research which paints to use for all the historic gear, then I remember how much I obsess about the right chapter markings for the space marines and all and I chuckle at myself for being human. xD Still having so much fun watching your guides even if I don't plan to eventually follow them :)

    Mate, that Aly’s Brown Liquid is brilliant for Afrika Corp figures and watching this came at just the right time for my new Army. With Vallejo Desert Yellow the base, I tried Agrax but it left deep parts of the uniform too brown in contrast and the Sepia whilst working well enough in the folds of the uniform, turned the whole model far too yellow for my liking. Thanks again and keep them coming.

    I recently tried a soft black pencil (B4) and rubbed it over raised areas of weapons which gives them a metalic look. It works quite well.

    It appears bleached their caps. I heard somewhere they did it with captured anti-gas ointment. Life in the desert was boring, and so they had time to waste on things like fashion, so there are a number of little quirks like this on both sides. This is speculation, but I suspect it came about because the longer you were in the desert, the more faded your uniform became. Therefore, it was the mark of a veteran.

    Funny thing how paints can look so different when you put something else next to them. I've been painting Winter Verdant MERDC on my Team Yankee Americans, and the Field Drab totally looks like a washed out green, but the moment it's next to the proper Forest Green and it's dry and solid, 100% brown.

    Eyy Aly's Brown Wash! Glad to see it being used in action and I almost gasped at how good it looked just applied by itself. Glad to see as well you based before priming, I do tend to find that easier when I want something specifically done as sometimes I find either the basing texture or even the 'stones' used to be a bit difficult to match with what I want. Again basing depends on every project but I do think majority of the time it would be preferable to have it applied before hand than not.

I base the miniature and i also fully paint and dry brush the scenic base before painting the miniature. Then I can control any mudding or dry brushing one the boots later.

    I usually base my miniatures after I paint them, but I decided to go a different route and base them before painting. Uncle Atom from Tabletop Minions had a short episode about basing before you paint, so I decided to go that route with my last batch of minis. Not 100% sure which I like, or if it really made much of a difference really, but I was interested in what you thought seeing as how you tried it with this miniature vs. how you usually base after the painting.

  • @SonicSledgehammerStudio

    @SonicSledgehammerStudio

    2 жыл бұрын

    I honestly can't say it seemed to make much of a difference. Using the rockier texture it was nice to have the security of the primer holding things together, but I've never really had an issue with basing material coming loose later, so... eh? I'm afraid there isn't a more useful concrete answer! 😅

    A great video! And I agree - great to have an update on this uniform. I've got a geeky question for you (which I can't remember if I've asked you before or not, so apologies if I have) You mention the Warlord Afrika Korps models are good for mid war. For the campaigns in Italy and Sicily are the Heer still wearing tropical looking kit? The pictures I find online of Sicily are mostly of Fallschrimjager in sandy looking equipment. I like that "uniform isn't" so I like to try and make my germans look as rag tag as possible! Mixing of field grey and middlestone?

  • @SonicSledgehammerStudio

    @SonicSledgehammerStudio

    2 жыл бұрын

    As it happens, in 1943 permissible wear of the tropical uniform was extended to the southern European theater. In the early stages of the Italian campaign you'd see quite a few of the old hands that'd come up from North Africa and Tunisia wearing their older kit. Reinforcements and conscripts coming south later would be provisioned and outfitted in standard feldgrau but you can well imagine the veterans would hold on to their distinct kit as long as they were able to wear it.
