Painting Desert & Temperate Italian Uniforms - The Longest How I Paint Things!
Ойындар
The Italian Royal Army - the Regio Esercito - was active across multiple fronts during the Second World War. Looked down on by its German allies as very much a junior partner more often than not, the Italian infantryman was nonetheless a formidable foe when in their defensive positions, and one that British troops of the 8th Army in particular would learn to respect in their battles across North Africa.
Italian troops were also deployed to the line on the Russian front, where they braved the same terrible hardships faced by all those who fought in those impossible conditions. Finally, with the fall of Sicily to Allied forces, the Regio Esercito would sign an armistice ending its time as a branch of the Axis powers on September 8th, 1943. Almost immediately, chaos ensued as troops loyal to Mussolini set up a government in northern Italy to form the Repubblica Sociale Italiana, and tired Italian soldiers loyal to the King and determined to throw the hated fascisti out of their homeland joined the Allies to become the Italian Co-Belligerent Army, Navy and Air Force. The Italian Co-Belligerent Army fought fiercely and acquitted itself well as part of Allied forces in Italy, crushing Mussolini's forces completely and liberating Italy in April 1945.
One final note not addressed in the video! If you're painting the smocks on these plastic figures, Vallejo German Camo Beige will work well, and for steel helmets in the desert a coat of Vallejo Desert Yellow is perfect.

It's so good! In part the reason why I tend to use a couple of different paint manufacturers in these things is not just because it's the easiest method more often than not, but to try and demonstrate to folks that sometimes trying that new range might be worth it. :D
Bersaglieri wore fezzes and were some of the best Italian Infantry. (As well as Pith Helmets with feathered plumes on them) Considered Elite by the Germans and British.
Awesome! This is going to come in handy for my desert Italians. Strange the warlord instructions say to use German camo orange ochre and canvas for the tropical uniform. I think I like your colors better.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio

The orange ochre looks a lot more 'sandy' than it does orange in practice - I think most of their guides assume you're going to return to base coats before going straight to highlights after chucking the shade on there, but I'm not that patient! 😅
Im following along with the temperate troop guide, they turned out great thanks
Fantastic work and tips here. Thank you for your tutorials!

Sempre avanti Savoia! Awesome video and awesome painting job!
Great video! Loved the variety of paints and the color comparison talk. It was a great episode thank you.
Man I was waiting for this guide! Great job and colour palette. Grazie Mille!
Got to love an army that still opted to form square in WW2!
This was great and I learned a lot about the Italian Army uniforms. Thanks for sharing this.
Just finished watching the video, and though I haven't painted any historical miniatures, the information about the different greens, was rather interesting. Also loved seeing how easy rank and file guys can be battle ready. Well done boss.
I just bought a pack of metal Italian infantry. So happy you actually did a video on them. 🤌🤌🤌

Love that you got the hand gesture in there!
Great looking stuff!
Excellent double dip video mate. Really nice job and color choices. Hi from Hollywood.
Actually I live in the city where Savoia was living in Italy. Very happy to see this minis painted! (Btw our skin is very pale, we are at North of the Italy, at the start of 1900 find a dark tone skilled soldier was a very rare event).
Thank you , Troy .
A great tutorial as usual . Like a lot the desert uniform .
Stunning video!
Nicely done!Viva l'Italia!
Another good video - thanks
They both look fantastic like the desert one best but only just.
Nice work love the channel !
I'm amazed by the dedication to find the right paints and to be historically accurate. :D It's kinda neat to consider all that! Thank you for discussing in such detail. Also cool to see Italians talk with their hands even as they walk into battle. :D

Super job yet again. Just working on some San Marco marines and I’ll use this as a primer.
Love watching you paint, even if it's for a game I don't play
The models look very well sculpted & have so many options. Since there is an option for North Africa, I may get a box to add to my Africa Korps to proxy early DAK, which had the horrible green jackets & sun hats.
great job so nice
super cool
Those paint jobs look excellent, really really nice work. I know you've done quite a few videos like this one and painted whole forces but your practice and experimentation is paying dividends (thank you for putting in the work so we can have an easy time!) and I love the tone differences in the desert uniform. For a BA nerd point comp Italians can be done because of their absolutely mg festooned vehicles (but army composition is exceptionally limited and dull if played to win - damned shame).
I just mixed AP field grey with wolf grey as recommended, but did it to a point where it was similar to field grey but not exactly the same.
I’ve just started watching but I have to stop and comment: if I can find an accordion player, my next band will be called The Plastic Italians.

Very informative on somewhat lesser known uniforms and equipment. When do you add mixing medium to your shades and when do you use them straight or “neat”?
Fantastic painting tutorial and I can’t wait to try this one out. One question. In the army and blackshirts set, you get an option of tunics; one being the Camiciotto Sahariano smock and the other being the M37 or M40 tunic. Do you know what the difference is? I’m guessing the latter is for tropical uniforms? Thanks again.
A great instructional vid as always! I think your channel is one of the ones that encouraged me to get into SWW mini's and those rule sets. I've been waiting for this one as I've built a few of my plastic Italians but not painted them yet. Probably going for the green uniforms for Sicily/Italy. With talk of plastic Bersagleri in the future I might save doing a desert force for them! I've one question though: There's a couple of chaps with the smock cover over their uniforms - Do you reckon a khaki or khaki grey? Thanks!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
2 жыл бұрын
Best bet for the smocks would be something like German Camo Beige or even Medium Grey (which isn't grey at all, weirdly) to get a lighter, faded khaki colour that'll stand out against the rest of their gear.
Great research Troy and a tremendous painting tutorial. Now do I follow yours or do I try my own, beauty is the way the uniform fades I can do a unit of both.

I'd think mixing in a little Light Grey to some of the basecoats would work wonders for shifting things around, too. I ordinarily try to avoid mixes in my flat colours, but I think it'd work super well for that faded wool look.

Luckily, their uniform's exactly the same. Except... well, a black shirt. 😅 The soft fez hats they would sometimes wear are also the same green grey cloth as everything else, so what you've got here will work just fine for black shirts.
Does anyone know what is the difference between yellow and black helmet markings for italians? Great vid btw, thx for your colour advises!!

Italians had two "temperate" uniforms - a standard green-grey uniform and a grey-blue uniform that was lighter weight and used for marching or labor duties, or worn by troops behind the frontlines.

@SonicSledgehammerStudio
2 жыл бұрын
The L6/40 is actually a really useful little tank. Nice and cheap, and kicks out a decent number of shots for something that small. You don't get anything big in the tank slot, sure, but against Russians you're not likely to need it. Save the points for a big artillery piece - you have great AT capability in the two dual-purpose AA guns available to Italians, which can also fire respectable HE against infantry.
@ConstableGrey

@@fairman1000 Lol yeah the L6/40's one-man turret rule makes it kinda suck. I wish the selector had the AB40 (as they had in real life), as that thing wrecks on the table.
You spell of "Grigio verde" is perfect, don't worry. Side question (sort of): from a model prospective mix this kit with french partisans is a viable option to kitbash italian partisans?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
2 жыл бұрын
Which partisans kit? If you're referring to the Wargames Atlantic kit, these Warlord Games arms unfortunately don't really fit well with the WGA torsos. If you're looking for old, clapped-out weaponry for partisans to have by this era, mixing and matching with the WGA French or German WWI infantry might be worth looking into, or some of the earliest Warlord plastics might work - I know the Blitzkrieg German arms do fit rather well.

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio my bad: I was thinking to the French Resistance Squad made by WarlordGames. I'll consider a Wargames Atlantic kit but the head system does not convince me. As always thank you for the answer (and the patience for my crass english!)
Omg the Hand gesture of the figure in the green uniform is stereotypical
Comment for the algorithm. :-)
one complaint I have about the kit is a lack of left handed arms. For example, you have a grenade being thrown in the right hand, but your only left handed options to go with this are the "Italian gesture" or a pointing arm, nothing else
@SonicSledgehammerStudio

The green camo would be better suited for the pattern on Paracadutisti patterns, I think. Might be a little dark for the uniforms, but depending on how you wanted to layer it up might work better as a base coat.
