Only tip to add from 20 plus years of painting autobody and heavy equipment don't spray in the sun you will see way better results. Awesome diy video! good job!!!! nice to see people getting after it and not talking about it !
Great video. Your store is awesome! Everything needed for boat rebuild. You got me looking for a project now! Thanks
I just got a boat like this thanks for the step by step looking forward to restoring mine
UPDATE: Michael, first I want to say thank you for you videos. I am about to start stripping paint on my late grandfather's 1968 Lonestar 16' semi-v bottom. I will start tomorrow. Im using Aircraft Remover paint stripper. My uncle painted it with latex paint with no primer. Its peeling and should remove very easily. UPDATE: I purchased a 3200psi pressure washer and it peels the paint right off. Some areas need more help with Aircraft Remover in some areas and a wire wheel in more stubborn areas but the paint as of today has been completely stripped. Tomorrow I'll polish the aluminum and get it ready for primer and paint after a wipe down with denatured alcohol. Thanks for the videos. They've helped all through the process.
Bought a ‘89 12ft Sears Gamefisher aluminum boat a couple weeks ago and saw this video. Did exactly what you did and it came out great! Now just need some decals and upgrade the Gamefisher 5hp engine to something a little bigger. Great video!
Hi. Nice to find your channel. I have a 1989 blue fin sportsman 1700 that I have repowered with a 1987 Yamaha 70. I am in the process of redoing the floor, wiring, and carpet. I was able to get some aluminum enough to do the entire floor and support the runners too. I love that this video shows just how easy it would be for me to paint the interior of the hull sides instead of applying carpet. Thanks for the video.
So after a year of this paint job and no clear coat how is it holding up? I’m restore a old boat myself.
Great Job! One tip for you is to use Kleen strip. I have used it on several jobs and you would be able to wipe the paint off instead of all that wire brushing.
I really like the look of that black paint!
I just got a 12ft v shape looking to turn into bass boat. Love how helpful your website it.
Michael your videos have been very helpful. I started to stripe my 14 ft starcraft jon boat and should be painting this weekend. Keep putting out these videos.

I just bought a 1968 14ft StarCraft seascape. Can't wait to restore it
Awesome job. My wife boasted she's gonna tackle a fresh paint job on my 17' Lund. I'll just show her this video and she'll think twice, hahaaa.
Love the videos. Just fyi: if you wet the concrete around where you're painting it will help cleanup and finish product. Good job. I'm motivated.
Great job ! Been thinking of painting mine and adding some graphics too. Cheers and thanks
Thank you for the video that looks awesome!
Nice video, starting on my smokercraft the same way
love the videos about to buy by first boat so gearing up
starting restoring a old boat to go to hard to get place so i don't damage a good boat great videos very helpful
JB WELD I use it to fill dents and holes in aluminum boat projects. Work line any other filler. Helps to bare sand with 80 grit then apply jb weld . I buy the biggest tubes I can find for larger areas and mix in bulk where possible. Leave is a little raised. Sand down to a finish, reapply as needed.
Looking good.
Looks good, thanks for the video.
Looks good man
Looks great ML. I'm a muralist...those index & thumbs tips (I'm sure you used both left & right) get sore after a couple cans, lol. Tip: A cheap painting tarp under your projects. In your case, it saves the driveway from silhouette. Gd wrk!
Good video. I'm looking to paint the top 1/2 of my boat to get rid of the all the stone chips I seem to have collected from trailering.
Great video and work. You are the man! :-)
Looks great! I did mine pretty much the same way

How is it looking now?
I sanded down my entire Jon boat White did down with rubbing alcohol and then primed it and then thinned out rust oleum oil base 6 years ago painted it with a roller still looks new. Then all my other Jon boat same prep except are you seahawk Jon boat paint also looks new still.
Always use stainless steel wire brush bits on aluminum. Some wire brushes are carbon steel and will leave rust swirls on aluminum. You do nice work Mike. I like visiting Lake Havasu. Many fond memories there. Too hot for me to live there year round though.

Wire brush is only good to initially strip the paint. You must go over it with 240grit to give it the appropriate scratches to bond. Scratches from wire wheel is too smooth for proper adhesion. It seems like wire wheel is all you need to do but the bond isn't as good.
you know you did good job
I saw on another video that someone used aerosol aircraft paint stripper as that stuff is hard as nails. I'm going to repaint my painting of an old paint job on my Starcraft. Then I'm going to be using heavy equipment/ tractor paint for it. The rattle can already has a hardener in it where the bulk paint you control the amount you add. Rustoleum has an above waterline paint that is great as well
clear it, good job man
What kind of longevity did you see from this paint job? I just used this video to paint my boat and I was wondering how long it should last like this. Thanks!
Great job
Thanks for the video. I’m going to do this.
Yo michael I know this video is old but I wanted to know if you painted the rear of the boat? Is it difficult or should I even paint the rear?
Nice work. Like the decals. Do you need to apply clear coat or anything else to make sure it stays on.
Question i have a aluminum boat an im wanting to paint it what kind of surface prep is required if any ?
@TinyBoatnation I have fitted a piece of checkered aluminum to the front deck of my boat 1650 mm with the bow Shape cut out to fit .. My Question is would this type of way that you have painted the outside of the boat be durable enough to walk on as it will be a casting deck
Cool mike that's how I plan on painting my 11.5!!
The bottom of the boat that did not get painted, did u sand it as well, and if so no rust issues
they sell rubber decal removers (Works on drill) at most auto body supply stores. way easier than scraping
Hey Michael, thanks for your inspiration on your builds. Two questions, Do you have TBNation or Depth Squad decals for sale? And have you ever used truck bed liner spray on the bottom of any of your builds? I have a boat I’m working on (it’s much like Matt’s boat) and it’ll be in creeks, rivers, and lakes. I’d like to have extra rock protection on the hull.
Noticed you left the engine in place? did you just go around it. Did you paint the engine? or Tape any areas to make sure paint didn't get somewhere it shouldn't? Thanks for the reply
I noticed you left the engine in place did you tape it to protect a certain area ? Did you paint the engine or just go around it? Also what about the bow? Thank for a reply
Do you have any advice for a first time.boat owner/buyer. I just got a mid 70s blue star 13.5 foot closed bow. It's kinda rough but no leaks It was on the water last year. I'm completely new to boating and would love some advice on what my first initial steps should be
Do you think I could just use a sheet sander and not wire brushes?
How many cans of primer and black spray paint did you use? I’m about to paint my boat in 2 weeks!
Might i suggest a polycarbonate stripping wheel. Not only will it SUPER easily strip but surface preps the metal for paint. Im a metal fab guy and thats all i use. Will remove all rust way better than wire wheels. Cheers!
Nice video bro did you use any type of clear coat
Bro I think the boat looks great and great job!! Thank you for sharing. This heavy duty wire brushes you used first are for taking thick rust and paint off a tractor oops! It looks awesome put stickers over that spot👍🏻
Painted mine with same stuff. Did you use a clear????
Did you use gloss or flat spray paint? Looks great 👍
I tried this and did terrible. Love the tbNation, but I can’t use a rattle can. How would you fix? (In Minnesota, Lots of algae)
How many cans?
Did u send/scuff the self-etch primer before your top coat? I searched online and they said self-etch primer needs to be sand for top coat to hold...
How do I make the back wall stronger for the motor on a jon boat 12ft
I cant fine the krylon automotive anywhere is there something comparable to use? I was trying not to spend the money on the zinc you spoke of...
100% can confirm. i used the same process. Only thing i did different was self etch primer -> regular primer -> paint. 200ish miles of gravel roads and she's VERY TOUGH, aside from a few very small dings still looks flawless. But dings and scrapes are a sign of adventure anyway. a perfect flawless pristeen boat never leaves the trailer or sees water and doesn't catch any fish.
nice video, thanks
멋지네요 Very nice video
Good job, where did u get urs decals they're so kool
Would Rustoleum Acrylic Enamel work the same? And if painting over the existing paint would I still need to use a primer?
I paint mine with air pressure and it came out to looks sick like new boat out of dealers
Hello, How wide is your boat trailer?
That paint job looked great. Keep up the good work bro.
I have a 50 year old aluminum boat. Trying to redo the bottom paint but there’s some heavy pitting that I found after sandblasting the bottom. Would you recommend that I fill the pitting with epoxy before putting on the new bottom paint?
Hello, I have a brand new unused aluminum trailer that I want to last me a long time. Should I sand and paint it right now ? Or leave it alone and later a year or two sand it and paint it ?
I watched few of your vids, good information. They make soft wire wheel cups for grinder in 4in 5in ect would speed up your strip process. Did my entire v18 in about 45mins

@@michaelbenna1089 not at all just dont do twisted wheels. The cups or straight bristles is about the best. All 19ft no problems
What kind of spray paint is the black spray paint
found Krylon for you. looks like it is only available at Sherwin-Williams. thank you for all the info you share!!! doing my second boat.
I need advice desperately I bought a Jon boat 12ft aluminum I sanded the whole thing then I sealed all the way around the boats rivets I sanded a little more than I applied six coat of can spray of 3m black under coating. I took it in the water yesterday it felt slow and drudging maybe heavier. I dont know what happen my boat has a six hundred pound wheight limit. It was so disappointing. I felt it did much better before I did any of this. Can you tell me some advice of where did I go wrong?
About how many cans did you need to paint the hole boat?
Where did you get your decals from?
Just got done painting my boat, went to apply a gloss clear coat (thought for more protection?) and it did not seem to stick at all and bubbles all over. Had good conditions and paint was fully dry, luckily I only did a small part of the boat before I realized what was happening. You did not mention a clear coat assuming you did not use one? After sanding and repainting the area it looks great again, wondering is a clear coat is necessary. Thanks
@rayanslim

Sounds like crazing from the first layer continuing to off-gas. either 1 hour between coats, or several days. The colour had to cure completely before the clear-coat. not just dry.
Is it hard to keep the black boat clean
That patch looks like JB Weld.
I used a structural epoxy putty made by Marine-tex to fill in some large defects like this. It goes on and cures like black glass but turns gray after it's sanded.
What will happen if I just prime n paint over old paint?
Did you ever take that on the river
I have a lot of experience with that citrustrip it works better if you scrape it off after 30 min or so. If you let it completely dry it doesn't really strip crap off. Last time i went with aircraft aluminum part stripper from Walmart

@@TinyBoatNation im with you there thats the same reason why i bought it it does work good but for me required 2 almost 3 bottles to get the job done. Boat looks great regardless.
How much each spray paint and primer did u go through for this project?
I noticed that you mentioned you used 6 cans total. Is this 3 primer and 3 regular paint? Or less primer more paint?
All i did was power-washed the boat anything that wouldn't come off with a 4gpm Power-washer i Just did a quick wet sand I spot primed the bare spots then used a $19 Harbor freight sprayer and that was 4 years ago and its holding up.... I only commented for people who dont have the time or want to strip whole boat.. the key is to get the old paint that is not coming off a Grit for new paint to stick... This is how they paint cars as well. they dont strip them down.... I mean thats the best way dont get me wrong...... but the washer striped everything inside boat so I was able to seal and weld (using aluminum brazing sticks ) for loose rivets or to just reinforce.. all my tiny boats before i used clear roofing silicone on all seams before i decked and it worked great as well. Happy fishing
Mike great video. I prepped my boat the same way with the exception of the paint. I just used three coats of oil based paint. I am sure it won't hold up as well as a two part Automotive paint but it was a easy to apply and should be easy to maintain I hope only time will tell. Over all I am happy with how it turned out. Everyone has their opinion on how things should be done But as we learn from one another our overall product gets better and I thank you and all the other TBN builders for their skills and knowledge.

If you put an oil based house paint on an aluminium boat, the coating will crack and begin to break down quickly, and the only remedy for it is to remove it completely. Oil based coatings are not flexible enough to flex and stay adhered to aluminium. A two part epoxy will always outlast a single component coating, but, that said, a definite no no us oil based coatings.
Be honest, how bad was the over spray on the Nissan?
@kevinwaller620

I'd say plenty.
Another Great video! How many cans do you think I would need for a 1542? Could you use a paint brush or roller to apply the paint, if so which brands would you recommend. Thanks again

Michael. Great video! I got some TB nation decals already. Im re doing my boat, and I NEED that Depth Squad sticker man! Where can I get it? It's not in your store...
Where can I find that depth squad sticker
I believe that is Devcon aluminum puddy used to repair aluminum. I have a question for you. what would you consider to be the best boat for making a "tiny boat"? v haul? flat bottom? what size?
Air craft paint remover not sure if it's still around put you spray that and the paint bubbles right off.
Hey off subject question. What would you think about using a a truck diamond plated tool box to replace the bench seat in the boat? I seen it on tiny boat forum.

@@TinyBoatNation thanks just a thought but i'll differ to the Tiny Boat 👑!
How many cans of paint did it take?
Bit late but I recommend epoxy primer since it is much more scratch resistant and strong as hell.
That repair must be Splash Zone A-788. Or something similar to it.
How many cans did you use.?
What do you suggest for doing the same but for a saltwater application

@@TinyBoatNation Do you have any experience with or suggestions?
That repair appears to have been done by JB Weld Marine Weld Epoxy. Sorry, probably answered many times already but I don't have time to read. Nice job.
There is a product called devcon aluminum putty which is the best way to patch holes and dents in aluminum if you do not have access to a mig welder with a spool gun. I have done repairs with fiberglass putty but you have to be very tedious with the prep and understand how fiberglass works in order for it to hold up
Jb weld is awesome shit on aluminum boats. Unless its major transom repair. Or major structure damage. you can use JB WELD with no worries.
Keep doing what you do brother # TBN
