Painted Studies in the style of Norman Rockwell

In preparation for a recent oil portrait commission, I did a couple small head studies to practice my paint application and color choices. This is a time lapse of the painting process of those studies. My client wanted me to paint the double portrait in the style of a Norman Rockwell. So I tried to capture that look as best I could from the photo reference.

I unexpectedly saw his paintings in person many years ago in one of the side galleries at the Guggenhiem. They were so beautiful they brought me to tears. Btw, I was surprised at how thick the painting on the canvas was. I always imagined that they would be flat like a print. Not so, at all!

That's great you got to experience seeing his work in person. I was very lucky to be able to go to his museum in Stockbridge, Massachusettes once. I was in awe.

I’m pretty impressed, especially how you did it holding the brushes so far from the bristles and still able to get control for the details. If I don’t hold them close like a pencil and have a stick to steady my hand I’d be all over the canvas. Great job.

Those were panels on New Traditions Art Panels. I believe they were the AC600 or A600 linen surfaces. My favorite canvas company.

Fantastic work! Could you say what colour palette you used for the flesh tones, and what if any oil medium was used ? Anne H. Sussex, England

Thanks Elizabeth. I generally use the same palette for most paintings. It's derived from artist Jeremy Lipking's color palette. Flesh colors can, of course, vary wildly from person to person and in different color temperatures of lighting. So there's no one combination that will always work. But I would say primarily I use Transparent Red Oxide (Rembrandt) and Titanium White as the base mixture and then Naples Yellow Light (or Yellow Ochre Light) and Cadmium Red in various combinations depending on the situation. I sometimes use Alizarin Permanent and King's Blue Deep when I need cooler colors mixed in. And I never use any mediums. In the beginning stages, I usually thin the paint with my solvent, Gamsol.

@@CourtJones Very grateful, Court. Have long admired Rockwell's work and wondered how he achieved his effects. Your demo actually makes it look possible! Myself mainly a landscape painter and have rather shied away from portraiture in oils, but your valuable info on colours/colour mixing provides a great incentive to try and remedy this.....Many many thanks

Thanks Michael! I had a lot of good classes when I was younger, at the Watts Atelier, here in California. Perhaps you could find some good classes or workshops in England. The Watts Atelier now offers courses online. You may want to look into it.

I like it a lot! But I think you could've tilted the woman's head a bit more to accentuate her gesture, also, if you take a look at her picture, you'll see that her face forms a really nice triangular shape, you could have used it too, I think it would've add more character to the painting. But that's just me, it looks amazing anyway!

It changes from time to time, but I would say primarily I use Transparent Red Oxide (by Rembrandt) and Titanium White as the base mixture for most flesh colors and then Naples Yellow Light (or Yellow Ochre Light), Cadmium Red or Ultramarine Blue to "bend" the flesh mixture lighter, darker, warmer or cooler. I sometimes add Alizarin Crimson Permanent and King's Blue Deep to my palette.
