In this video, the artists of StudioR12 show how to use varnish, rather than paint, through stencils. This gives a beautiful tone-on-tone look with a gloss finish. We show how this looks with a background word stencil, as well as a fall pattern stencil.

🎨Paints: Use a good quality craft acrylic paint, if your paint is runny or seems thin, it won't perform as well as paints that have body and are not thin.

What happens to the clear coat background once it is sealed?

Patty says after you get your background done, you can use a matte varnish all over. Then gloss varnish through the stencil. If you use a matte varnish after you use the gloss, it will dull it. We haven't tried using a spray varnish with this technique.
