Paint Masking Using a Laser Cutter!

Ғылым және технология

Tested contributor Bill Doran (aka Punished Props) is in our shop this week and experiments using our Universal Laser Systems laser cutter to make a quick paint mask for a helmet. This can be done with standard painter's tape or a large sheet of masking tape, and we learn some lessons about masking complex curves.

problem with the bleeding is they put a thick first coat. if they had done light coats but many over time it wouldn't have turned out like that.

Try using powder coating tape. It's stronger, and a lot easier to cut and manipulate, so you get cleaner, straighter lines. It's also translucent, so you can see where you're laying down your tape. Some of them are also made to withstand high heat, so you can bake/cure your paint without the masking falling off.

Another great vid guys! Maybe on iteration 2 you could cut some relief cuts on the side. This would allow the sides to sit on the curve better.

thumbnail made me think Frank was back :( Notice Norm rubbed the mask with his fingers and Bill used his sleeve... use gloves people your sleeves will leave detergents behind and your skin oils.. makes the paint not stick. Also on a helmet NEVER PAINT OVER THE DOT STICKER! Now that they painted over it, that helmet is illegal to use on the road. If you are going to paint a helmet, mask the DOT sticker up so it doesn't get covered.

Writing the CNC software is the easy part for me, but building the mechanical, electrical and optical parts... that's the challenge. I've done stencils for over a decade. pro-tip: spray further away, dont stop spraying (those small squirts can be bad news), dont spray back over an area you just sprayed, do multiple light layers and let it completely dry between layers, make sure it's completely dry when you peel it off. you can even get special caps for spray paint for stenciling that spray at a slower rate. They help. typically when things bleed under a stencil they look more faint and not so well defined. are you sure it is bleed from under the masking tape or was it because the stencil was lifted off while wet and the layer had way too much paint so when you pulled the tape away it pulled paint with it and moved it to places it shouldnt have been. do multiple light layers and let them all completely dry will solve that. I like to think that there is no such as thing as "dry enough to peel off the masking tape". wait for it to completely dry.

Not that I'm aware of. I was an engraver for years and was constantly on the lookout for something like that. From what I managed to find out, anything called vinyl is shorthand for polyvinyl chloride, which releases Cl2 gas when burned among other things. They do make some special films that can be used for masking (better heat dissipation for glass engraving) but that's the closest I found.

When I want to do a "special " paint job I use a similar base coat color and then make a artful choice from an auto touch up spray can rack. They have maybe a hundred different colors shades and textures. For an absolute novice it turns out great, almost professional. Auto paint is harder and has a finer sparkle than metal flake. Try it you'll like it.

J Benson exactly, the paint went on too heavy. You need to put 3-4 dry coats, just dusting it on with 10 minutes between coats and then two wet coats. As a car modeller I use Tamiya spray paints a lot and it always works for me.

Cool!!! But... A motorcycle helmet consists of a rigid outer shell, which should not be painted or altered in any way with the placement of adhesives, chemicals, solvents, paints or other agents not authorized by the manufacturer, as this would negatively affect the structure of the hull, weakening it, and therefore partially or totally reduce the protection offered by it.

Including some that were done in shops, which did not have personnel as well-informed as Piet Paulusma.

Police warn against applying ANY stickers, for that reason. I do not know if this version is safe but, even if it, is we should be told why, and there should be advice on what to avoid, to prevent degrading the helmet's protection.

Mark Pendragon I'm sure we all appreciate the concern. Go ahead and watch the video you posted and he says the problem is long term with the adhesives of stickers degrading certain plastic material helmets. Tested employed the use of temporary low adhesive tape to apply paint. Completely safe.

@Raven Ethereal Thanks for the info. I still think it is a missed opportunity to have failed to emphasise the importance of that. But am glad that Tested were not (directly) encouraging unsafe practice. Now I only need to hold my hands over my eyes, when I see Adam reaching under a spinning lathe. :-D

The tested content is becoming really boring. If you compare this to like the lightsaber casting tutorial this is really mediocre. Also the one day builds are all basically putting together kits.

I was the same way but I found that "Still Untitled" is a good transition to enjoying these types of videos.

The helmet looked shit regardless of the design.
