Paint and Review: Mantic Games Terrain Crate - Industrial Zone [How I Paint Things]

Ойындар

The Terrain Crate from Mantic Games gives you a ton of plastic parts you can assemble into anything you'd like - they're even compatible across ranges, so you can have clapped-out, dilapidated industrial ruins clinging to military bunkers or cityscapes.
I'd say they're ideal for games like Infinity, Stargrave or Five Parsecs From Home, given their size and height, but they'd work for anything where you need a suitably populated table. With all the scatter terrain included in the kits as well, there's plenty of scenery to help fill your battlegrounds with cover!

Ha! Was actually painting mine last night. Had primed in grey and white, then a speed paint grey. Unfortunately then spilled far more copper paint into pallete due to a bunged nozzle. So now the panels are going from a copper metallic to being grubbied, thanks to circumstance.

The uneven burnt umber undercoat does look great on its own; but then, each subsequent stage looked ready to hit the tabletop.

That's the thing I really like about this method, honestly. Past a point you're just doing finishing touches; if you want to fill a table with terrain you can do it super quickly.

The set is very interesting looking and it nice to see you can make different combinations of structures with the kit. The painting looks great and I like the idea of not having to use a shade. Thanks for sharing this.

You could come back with a shade and darken some panels individually, but both for amount of shade you'd need and the time saved in not having to wait for it to dry? Nah, nuts to that!

I backed their terrain kickstarters (and their dreadball, deadzone, mars attacks, dungeon saga, and star saga... god damn their KS got a lot of money from me...) and so have enough of this stuff to fill a 6x4 table several stories high. It's really good for what it is. It can look a little blocky so needs to be used in a setting where that's appropriate. Thankfully that's most sci-fi settings on tabletop haha. You do want to avoid brushing on washes though since it's all flat surfaces yeah but oil washes through airbrush with large sponges to pass over it quickly can work well. This method is probably better though imo. There are airbrush templates designed specifically for this terrain which works great for adding detail too.

I swear there was an echo of Bob Ross in this video..."your yellow...or red or blue, whatever colour your using" seriously thought you were going to follow up with "You can do anything you want to do. This is your world" or "We don't make mistakes. We just have happy accidents." ....anyways awesome video as ever. 👍😃

Mantic has some modern-day urban terrain they produce for their Walking Dead game. I purchased three sets and modified them to represent post-apocalyptic ruins and they worked great. I just used cheap acrylic paints and some washes and they turned out really nice. I actually still have a few ruined walls I never got around to fully painting. They are pretty nice and since they're modular you can make some rather large structures if you have enough sets.

It's a neat box of plastic you can really play around with, so there's a good chance you could make whatever you're thinking from it. That's even without pulling out the clippers and chopping it up!

Thanks for this tutorial! I was in on the Deadzone Kickstarter and got a ton of this kind of terrain. Didn't have anywhere to play at home and since I would only get in any kind of gaming at the FLGS anyhow, I sold it to them. It sat unused for nearly a year, and even though I've got just about everything BattleSystems makes, I bought back the Mantic stuff to use for my solo skirmish gaming. Now that I have a small airbrush system I can at least get these things primed so they can be painted.

Fun bonus fact regarding this and Cities of Death: the founder of Mantic, Ronnie Renton, is the person behind the original CoD release and these clip-together kits are made the way they are specifically because he felt the CoD buildings lacked modularity.

  • @SonicSledgehammerStudio

    @SonicSledgehammerStudio

    2 жыл бұрын

Huh! Now that I did not know. Honestly, I'm surprised by the 'lack of modularity' idea - the Cities of Death stuff was bonkers for what you could do with it, but I can see there's even more going with the Terrain Crate buildings.

  • @toferkrz946

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Maybe 'not enough modular' would be more accurate. I remember him saying something to that effect in some sort of interview years back. Anyway, the original CoD buildings were pretty cool, but mostly just for corner ruins - things started getting a bit tricky and required a hacksaw as soon as you tried to do an intact structure or anything out of the ordinary. This Mantic stuff is great for both intact structures and ruins.

I know I’m showing my age here, but add a clear plastic door in the center of the piece, a few large chunky buttons on the lower mesh grill, and it would look just like an old boom box cassette player……

  • @zanzabarr

The panels are 3 inches high, and are dimensions of 3 inch by 3 inch by 3 inch, as the game is played on 3"x3"x3" cubes. The railings are probably like 1-1.5 inches high.
