    Emma you make it look so easy and I wish I could get the hairs clean and realistic - respect for your talent. I tried and nearly binned him a few times but as a beginner it was a great learning experiment so thank you !! So grateful he found you and can have a forever love home with you now. I adopted a dog who also has only three legs and I love her resilience. How do you not put too much pastel down - I found the pastel pitts would not go on top of the pastel ?

  • @EmmaColbertArt

    Hi Sarah-Jane. As my first time with a tri-paw I can definitely now say they are awesome in their adaptability. With the pastels I do use a pretty light touch a lot of the time. It takes a bit of practise to get some different weights behind your marks but it will come. My early work shows that talent is a small fraction. It's practise that will make the pastels comfortable and easy in your hands.

    Hi Emma, Your beautiful cat is the splitting image of my sister's cat so following this tuturiol has been amazing although I have almost binned 3 attempts! Can you tell me which of the pastel mat papers is best value for a beginner. Is it better to buy bigger pads or use the boards? You are a fabulous teacher!

  • @EmmaColbertArt

    @EmmaColbertArt

    6 ай бұрын

    Thank you and I'm so glad you found Mocha's portrait helpful. He is such a good boy! I always like to buy individual sheets to be honest as the pads often come with a couple of colours I don't like so much. I also like to be able to cut the bigger sheets down and make several paintings of different shapes. So I recommend a couple of sheets in different colours until you figure out what colours and sizes you like best.

    Thank you! You could certainly try this in another medium. The information you have is what colours to use. The information you lack is how to work with the different medium. Oil pastel and soft pastel are similar in some ways, but also quite different. I know that many people paint along with me in different mediums though so give it a go!

    Thanks Emma this was truly a masterclass. I am now undaunted by fur and whiskers. Do you have a full range of Faber Castle pencils for your art or a limited selection? Keep it up

  • @EmmaColbertArt

    Mark that's great to hear! Many subjects seem daunting when there is a very doable method. I have lots of pencils but really only use a small selection of them. Black and white, light cream, light grey, a couple of browns, a blue, a couple of light flesh tones. Mostly I use the sticks and use the pencils to push the pigment into place without relying on the pencils to make every mark.

    Hello love your videos I have a question how do you choose what color to put first then the rest on top

  • @EmmaColbertArt

    @EmmaColbertArt

    13 күн бұрын

    That's a good question. If it's fur then I'm looking below the top layers of fur to the roots and it's often darkest in there. I start with the darkest tones and try to build gradually to the highlights. With everything I'm looking for a darker base layer that the next layers will show up on. So it's usually darker than you think.

  • @EmmaColbertArt

    It depends on the paper and pastels you're using. Also try to use the softer pastels for your lighter marks. The harder sticks will struggle to make light marks.

  • @EmmaColbertArt

    @EmmaColbertArt

    3 жыл бұрын

    Don't worry about seeing colours. I couldn't see anything past grey in shadows in the beginning. Firstly it's not always necessary but seeing more colours will help your work look more 3D. Secondly, please have a look at my colour theory videos here on KZread. Watching some things like this will really help. If you do, at some point you'll realise you're starting to see things differently. Don't stress about it. Art comes in many forms, you can still be an artist and not use blue in shadows :-)
