Thank you! I did study as an illustrator so I think a bit of that comes through in my work. I do love having less of a brief to work to these days though. The Illustration world is very different.
Painting Tabby cats has always been hard for me. This helps sooooo much. Thank you❗ 😊 👍 🎨

Beautiful:)
he's gorgeous well done
Emma you make it look so easy and I wish I could get the hairs clean and realistic - respect for your talent. I tried and nearly binned him a few times but as a beginner it was a great learning experiment so thank you !! So grateful he found you and can have a forever love home with you now. I adopted a dog who also has only three legs and I love her resilience. How do you not put too much pastel down - I found the pastel pitts would not go on top of the pastel ?

Hi Sarah-Jane. As my first time with a tri-paw I can definitely now say they are awesome in their adaptability. With the pastels I do use a pretty light touch a lot of the time. It takes a bit of practise to get some different weights behind your marks but it will come. My early work shows that talent is a small fraction. It's practise that will make the pastels comfortable and easy in your hands.

The pastelmat helps with add on layers. Great surface for pastel pencils
There is a small flap on the outside of a cat's ears called Henrys Pocket, or it's scientific name "cutaneous marginal pouch" that was rendered quite masterfully. Very well done.

Hi Emma, Your beautiful cat is the splitting image of my sister's cat so following this tuturiol has been amazing although I have almost binned 3 attempts! Can you tell me which of the pastel mat papers is best value for a beginner. Is it better to buy bigger pads or use the boards? You are a fabulous teacher!
@EmmaColbertArt

Thank you and I'm so glad you found Mocha's portrait helpful. He is such a good boy! I always like to buy individual sheets to be honest as the pads often come with a couple of colours I don't like so much. I also like to be able to cut the bigger sheets down and make several paintings of different shapes. So I recommend a couple of sheets in different colours until you figure out what colours and sizes you like best.
Cara menggambar sangat baik 👍
Большое спасибо за Ваш подробный урок! Скажите , пожалуйста, можно ли рисовать этого котика масляной пастелью? Я новичок... Thanks a lot for your amazing lesson!❤ Kiev, Ukraine

Thank you! You could certainly try this in another medium. The information you have is what colours to use. The information you lack is how to work with the different medium. Oil pastel and soft pastel are similar in some ways, but also quite different. I know that many people paint along with me in different mediums though so give it a go!
Thanks Emma this was truly a masterclass. I am now undaunted by fur and whiskers. Do you have a full range of Faber Castle pencils for your art or a limited selection? Keep it up

Mark that's great to hear! Many subjects seem daunting when there is a very doable method. I have lots of pencils but really only use a small selection of them. Black and white, light cream, light grey, a couple of browns, a blue, a couple of light flesh tones. Mostly I use the sticks and use the pencils to push the pigment into place without relying on the pencils to make every mark.
I like to use a General brand white charcoal pencil for the whiskers. It is softer and whiter than thè pastel pencils.

@@EmmaColbertArt You are welcome. I use Uart 400 or 500 and have never tried pastelmat so not sure if that will make a difference; but the charcoal pencil goes on much softer than the pastel pencil and is quite a bright white.

@@EmmaColbertArt I use Koh-I-Noor Coal White pencil Grade 2. It's super white, much whiter than any pastel pencil I own
Hello love your videos I have a question how do you choose what color to put first then the rest on top
@EmmaColbertArt
13 күн бұрын
That's a good question. If it's fur then I'm looking below the top layers of fur to the roots and it's often darkest in there. I start with the darkest tones and try to build gradually to the highlights. With everything I'm looking for a darker base layer that the next layers will show up on. So it's usually darker than you think.
Thank you so much Emma for these 2 videos. Which pencil sharpener do you use? . Which one do you recommend me? Regards.

I took a look at your Patreon channel. How many full length tutorials can you access at the Dusty Level 2?
@EmmaColbertArt

Hi Jeff, you can browse my library of tutorials available to that level at www.emmacolbertart.com/tutorials/ These are all open to that level. I try to make the main tutorials available to Patrons across the levels and I create separate content additionally for the higher levels. But this library is available to levels 2 and up.
Hi Emma I am just starting out with pastels and am struggling to get the light colours to go over the top of the dark they kind of just merge with the darker colour any advice on what I am doing wrong?
@EmmaColbertArt

It depends on the paper and pastels you're using. Also try to use the softer pastels for your lighter marks. The harder sticks will struggle to make light marks.
How do I do a black cat I'm a beginer
😍🤗👍♥♥♥♥
I feel like ill never be an artist bc i don’t see this blue that everyone else sees underneath black or on shadows.
@EmmaColbertArt
3 жыл бұрын
Don't worry about seeing colours. I couldn't see anything past grey in shadows in the beginning. Firstly it's not always necessary but seeing more colours will help your work look more 3D. Secondly, please have a look at my colour theory videos here on KZread. Watching some things like this will really help. If you do, at some point you'll realise you're starting to see things differently. Don't stress about it. Art comes in many forms, you can still be an artist and not use blue in shadows :-)
