This was extremely helpful! I'm new to pastels (and really, all mediums) and I found working on the backgrounds almost harder than the subjects. I would get a decent subject but ruin it by having a poor background. This was exactly what I needed, although I have yet to work on pastelmet or velour (I've been trying 400 grit sandpaper and Uart as new because of cost) but I look forward to trying this out.

Your animal expression is amazing and I love the feathering and the contrast of blur and detail! I’ve never been much interested in soft pastels but the detail you got on the hawk and your demo with tips is really inspiring! Thank you for this amazing share!

Emma, this is exactly what I've been searching for. So encouraging to hear you saying you have panicky moments, thought it was just me. Just ordered my first lot of velour paper so looking forward to trying that out.

Great! Glad this was helpful. Art is full of exciting panicky moments for everyone. It gets better the more confidence you get but it's totally normal :-)

Your work is so beautiful and you are a wonderful instructor, thank you so much for all the effort you put in all of your videos. I just found your channel and while I'm not a 'pastel painter' I have used them for sketching out paintings to determine value and color prior to starting an oil, acrylic or watercolor. After binge watching several of your vids I'm rethinking this medium, thank you! BTW Please feel free to mention "liking' your vids more often during your instruction, far less talented instructors/painters on this platform do so and receive more exposure than your channel when it is not as deserving (IMO) due to consistent asks for subscribers/likes :) Most of us automatically like a vid when asked but forget to when not asked.

Wonderful to watch you just now. Yes, you are an inspiration ! What I have been doing is painting 'a flower, Iris' and told the black background makes it pop. I made another with watercolour underpainting. Seems rather 'dead' tho. Many colours in the Iris even colours not thought to be next to each other, pink/orange/dark orange, lavender etc. center and very hard to replicate for me somehow. Meaning: practice is needed. 9X12 UART so hard to get into that center area with my finger some colours need blending because they are blended in the petal area. Anyhow: now think to do as you have shown, pastel background but when one has a flower with many colours then am going full circle, what colour is best? colours of the flower eg main colours. Otherwise would look like a circus. Will wait to see if you will show how to make the best background colours when painting just one flower. Am assuming some background, blur tool as you suggest, in dark greens ..is my guess. But you are a thousand years ahead of me so ...will wait to hear back. Thank you and best wishes, from Sonoma CA, senior !

Nature is great at throwing lots of colours together! Keep experimenting with colour. I have some videos here on backgrounds in general. Something here might help. kzread.info/head/PLbkshqfGlew-F24I1-sfq5OE4NXIzOXE6

Emma, thank you very much for your great video content! I learn a lot from your tutorials and tips. I'm planning on buying a camera to shoot my own reference photos. What camera do you use? Would you give me a recommendation? Thank you again!

Hi, I use a really old Canon EOS 450. It's literally over 10 years old but it still does a great job for me. I recommend the DSLR type cameras because of the soft out of focus you can create with different lenses. But you don't need top of the range if your photos are to paint from. Many of today's camera phones have higher resolution than my DSLR!

Very helpful, thanks. Do you always do backgrounds first or is it a painting by painting decision?

  • @EmmaColbertArt

Almost always the background first Mike. I like the edges to overlap my subject a bit so it really sits in front of the background afterwards.

Really beautiful painting and thank you so much for sharing with us!!! Do you also apply fixative after finishing painting please let me know?

  • @EmmaColbertArt

Thanks for watching and commenting! I don't use fixative. On a good pastel paper that holds many layers it's really not necessary. Store unframed work covered over between sheets of paper or glassine. Frame finished work behind glass and that is it protected for life. The pastel won't fall off the Pastelmat and fixative darkens colours.

Hi Thea, if you watch the timelapse version of this piece you'll see me use a grid method to draw it out first because it's Pastelmat. kzread.info/dash/bejne/k6N3mMuslMq6psY.html But on velour paper I do things differently which you can see at kzread.info/dash/bejne/l5142tWHadnedZM.html. Hope that helps :-)

Emma, have you ever used Frisket matting over your main subject when you work on your backgrounds?

  • @EmmaColbertArt

    @EmmaColbertArt

    Жыл бұрын

Hi Scott, no I haven't. Not sure what it is. Is it just to mask the area like you might in watercolour? I don't mind getting some of my background smudged over into the main subject. All that will be covered anyway and I want the edges to overlap so that my main subject's edges go cleanly on top.
