Ғылым және технология

Hi Friends! In this video, I explain what specifically causes pain with chewing, why it happens, and what - anatomically - is causing the pain.
If you're unfamiliar with TMJ Disorders, common signs and symptoms include but are not limited to: headaches, neck pain, jaw pain, ear-related concerns, shoulder pain, specific tooth pain, jaw joint noises, and/or episodes of the jaw locking or catching.

Great video, I finally understand my TMJ when you break it down into different areas. I have had all of these painful symptoms. I am now on Naproxen which has made an incredible improvement. My disk is all "mashed up", I have had Crepitus as well. My doctor also has me on some jaw strengthening and opening exercises. On top of it, I had Disc fusion of my C1 and C2 a year ago. (Yes, I'm kind of an arthritic mess, LOL.) If I have to rely on Naproxen for the rest of my life, I wonder what I am going to do, I don't know the long term affects of it is. Thanks for your videos, Priya!!!

For people who have clear clicking and popping where the disk come out of alignment, why is it that some people don't experience any pain from the retrodiscal tissue. I had TMD with clicking and popping but never experienced pain coming from the retrodiscal tissue itself, but did have slight pain and soreness coming from all the muscles of mastication. Is there a certain level of disfunction that has to be reached in the system for the pain in the retrodiscal tissue to arise?

  • @theTMJdoc

Yes, I've seen this too - where people with clicking/popping DON'T have pain from the retrodiscal tissue. I don't have a clear answer as to why, unfortunately.

Opinions on a displaced disk in jaw that just cracks easily if I move my mouth a certain way. It’s been like this for 7 years and i have to wait until I’m older to get the surgery bc my parents. I’m 19 rn. If I don’t eat, the side of that area (left side of jaw) feels a small ache sensation and it feels like I need to keep cracking/popping it. Idefk I’ve dealt with this torture everyday. Is this permanent or something.

Have you got any information about TMJ and tinnitus? I thought I was growing def, but after hearing exams, my doctor told me it's my jaw and there is nothing he can do about it... Hello, hopefully you can help me. I previously had popping/pain on my left TMJ. I was put on day/night guard 24/7 for 7 months and successfully completed phase 1. To start phase 2(braces) I was sent to remove all wisdom teeth. It's been 3 weeks since wisdom teeth removal and there has been a strong pain only on the same tmj I treated everytime I chew. My jaw did not like the surgery too much. Pain grows with harder foods, pains concentrated on the joint but after chewing, muscles on cheek feel sore. Since there's no popping/clicking I feel it might be the muscles of mastication. My question is, will time and a soft food diet resolve the issue or will I need a specific treatment. I truly appreciate it.

I seeked out to my TMJ doctor but he said to wait out at least 6 weeks post wisdom teeth surgery before even doing an exam. My concern is that I could do damage to my joint/muscle while waiting since pain is significant. I guess I just want a second opinion.

I have seen a neurologist this week who has told me my left droopy eyelid is a severe form of muscular TMJD and when my jaw and temporal area hurt the most I also get a droopy eye lid on the affected side. Months on end. It freaked me out in the beginning but neuro assured me it's muscular. My face is now being asymmetrical because of this and i hate it. Makes me really sad. I do have a bad case of TMJD and wish I was able to visit your practice. But I live in Europe. Health insurance wise I prob can. But idk if it will help me. It's just really frustrating that 3 years in, it is worsening and treatments have no affect so far. Botox is my last hope. Don't like it. Very expensive (it's not insured here) but I need to try it. Fingers crossed.

I dislocated my jaw eating an apple...my teeth got stuck. My chiropractor put it back but I was having trouble keeping it in. I found you videos and I am 8 weeks into the jaw staying in place. I realized that it was the muscles that kept pulling the jaw out. You are the only one that actually mentioned adjusting the neck. I am about 98% tmj free...no clicking etc.. due to the massaging the muscles behind the ear. I am massaging all the chewing muscles daily now.

In my head i can't seem to understand how resting the tongue on the roof of the mouth is correct tongue posture. I mean, isn't that similar to having your arm up all day? How would that be a relaxing position? Either way, i assume you do it, is it worth it to rest the tongue in the roof of the mouth?

Got a custom made splint even though I don’t believe in those things cause it doesn’t resolve the problem and at first everything went well for a couple weeks and cracks and pops were less and now I’m getting the jaw pains again .
