I wouldn't say a non factor - SC likely would have won anyway, however, it would have probably been more of a close game. It's just a huge difference if you can go 9, 10 players deep vs really just having 5 players (no offense against Samuels and Brady, but the level of play simply is not the same when they get subbed in). But I always say that's part of the game too. Geno was very lucky for a long time, having deep and largely healthy teams. Now it's someone else's turn. @@anthonytaylor7928

I don't think that's the problem - I feel like she is too nice with her team mates and not assertive enough when it comes to being the leader. It looks like she wants to let her game speak for her but sometimes you gotta tell your team mates what they are supposed to do, even if you don't have a great game and are struggling yourself. The first half they were trying to run with SC and that's what doomed them. That's when KK and Ash would have needed Paige to tell them to slow the f down. And Nika would have needed Paige to tell her to go get that ball and control the tempo, run plays. I don't think it would have been enough to beat SC but at least it would not have been a blow out win for them, had UCONN realized that with only 5 players they cannot run up and down the court and jack up shots like headless chicken.

@@nkanski8854- The problem is, Paige doesn’t shoot enough. For whatever reason, she won’t take enough mid range jump shots. When she gets the ball, she can function as a point guard if she drives down towards the basket, tries to get her jump shot and if it’s not there, pass off to an open person. Lucy Olsen of Villanova takes a lot more shots than Paige. I mean come, on Geno says take more shots and even the South Carolina head coach said take more shots to Paige. The problem is definitely. Paige needs to take more shots. Plus we have a lot of injuries, but that doesn’t explain my page only has 20 points.

It's no question that Connecticut has dealt with a horrific run of injuries to their roster over the last 2-3 seasons. It MUST be exhausting to the players that can still go, as well as Auriemma and his staff, to constantly have to re-construct their starting unit and the roles they play throughout these seasons, all while trying to not only be competitive but to win IT ALL. I'm quite sure that Bueckers never imagined she'd be playing the 4 and 5 during her career at Connecticut. But it's always confused me regarding Auriemma's system at Connecticut: as a South Carolina fan, I vividly remember the FIRST win the Gamecocks got after 8 consecutive losses to the Huskies, that took place in the same arena in Columbia during the 2019-20 season. Bueckers and Edwards won't remember it unless as a fan like me, as both were in high school that season. I can't remember what any injury situation CT was dealing with THAT season, if they dealt with one at all. In that game, Auriemma played six (6) players all game long - one (1) player fewer than he had play against USC Sunday. Then there was the overtime loss at Stanford during the 2014-15 season. The unparalleled team of Stewart, Tuck, Mosqueda-Lewis, Stokes, and Jefferson. That game went to OVERTIME, and only 7 players played in it. From a roster of twelve (12): were there any injuries to that team at the time?? I can't recall. So this situation is not new for Connecticut - only the REASONS for those situations have changed. The injuries have taken away CHOICES for Auriemma as to WHOM he will play out of that 6-7 players. But I'm quite sure that if CT had a roster of 11-12 players - or even 15 players - and they were ALL 100% healthy to go, that we'd have seen a rotation of 6-7 maybe 8 players, and the rest would all sit. OR the rest would get mop-up minutes at the end of the game after the final outcome was sealed. Because that's just what Luigi Auriemma has ALWAYS done at CT. So, who was missing from the game due to injury??? The ONLY player I give ANY credence to, would be Griffin. Griffin is perhaps CT's BEST ATHLETE, in terms of rebounding, defending, and initiating fast breaks. Griffin has proven herself to be a game-impacting player for CT when the opponent is a quality opponent on the biggest stage - NOT just a conference foe, or a non-ranked major or mid-major. Audrey would be a player CT could rely upon to make plays and change the game narrative. Then perhaps there is Ducharme. Caroline did score 9 pts in her lone game versus the Gamecocks in the NCAAT Championship game loss. She could provide some offense, but she was a bit of a defensive liability, and only was able to foul on that end of the floor. After that, who else??? No one, really. Everyone talks about Fudd, because of how highly touted she was coming out of high school. Fudd was considered by many to be even BETTER than Bueckers coming out of HS, and this was right after Bueckers exploded onto the College landscape her freshman season (Bueckers of course was highly touted as a prep player too, but then she backed it all up with her play her first year in college, qualifying all the hype and potential). Fudd has feasted on those mid-majors and conference opponents, when she was able to play. Against South Carolina, she played two (2) games and was 1-3 for 3 pts in 27 minutes of combined play, and not much else than that. Why wuld Fudd be expected to make a difference in a game against the Gamecocks? Then there is Patterson. Patterson played one single game versus the Gamecocks, on the floor for 14 minutes, and collected one steal and one blocked shot - plus three fouls and two turnovers. No points, rebounds, or assists. No shot attempts. Would Patterson be the savior for the Huskies, had she played? El Alfy hasn't played a single minute of college basketball for the Huskies, so any notion of what she could have brought to the table is just presumption. So, those are five (5) players that ANY college program would be happy to have as a starting unit, based on sheer potential of talent. I just don't know what realistically they have shown to be able to bring to the table in a critical game against a top opponent, save Audrey and perhaps Caroline. Other than their 5 fouls each, and whatever minutes they could give the actual starters to keep them fresh and out of foul trouble. Fouls and ANY minutes - when your team is overwhelmed personnel-wise - have real value. So, missing those above players for that reason alone, could be harmful. But..... Where was DeBerry and Bettencourt? THEY both have 5 fouls each THEY could have brought to the table. They BOTH were totally available to play. What is the deal with DeBerry, anyways?? She was a 5-star McDonald's AA, and is an Upperclassman. Bettencourt is a Sophomore who played 25 games as a freshman, with one start. Why weren't these players able to even set foot on the court for Connecticut?? To use their fouls to save those for the starters? To give their starters even a few seconds of rest time to make the final 4th Quarter push in hopes of winning the game? Dawn Staley has ALWAYS made it a part of HER system, to give ALL the players on her roster opportunities to play minutes and contribute to the team, against ALL comers. Auriemma has a history - even going back to the Breanna Stewart days, of having all his starting unit average 30+ minutes per game, even against conference opponents where CT never EVER lost a game, and averaged 40-pt margin of victories throughout the history of their being members of said conferences. Now, he just doesn't have the CHOICES he likes to have, sitting on the bench looking at him during those games. But if he HAD them, would they have made a difference at all, against an opponent like South Carolina? Or would they just be excuses for the CT fanbase to use......

  • @TyroneSettles

SC is a good team UConn only really could play five players you aren’t beating a deep team like SC on the road without all of your players healthy. UConn needs to focus on getting those kids back healthy. With everyone healthy this UConn team has more than enough talent. But every big game UConn is going into for the last two seasons not healthy is liking walking into the game with a hand tied behind their back. SC is going on a little run right which is cute. SC has yet to beat UConn when they are ranked #1 in the country. Every UConn team they have beaten has either been injured or not a stereotypically good UConn team. UConn has beat SC when they were ranked #1 twice I think. When SC beats a fully loaded UConn team then we can talk. But until then we can’t ignore teams are only beating by large margins UConn when they aren’t completely healthy.

We need to face the facts, no team is ever had 100% this late in the season in almost every sport you can name. Injuries are all part and particle of every sport. If you are looking for a team to be 100% healthy, you have to catch them about 2 weeks before the start of their preseason workouts. And some are even injured in between seasons.

Bueckers and Fudd came to UConn with high expectations of championships but injures have take those chances totally away from them. Nika is ok, she's tough, but she is not fleet of foot or even quick. In each of the teams 5 losses, it been her assignment that has killed UCONN. Harmon, Rivers, Pao Pao, and Hildago all beat her badly. Its time Geno has awakened to that fact. His failure to utilize Nesh befuddles me. He has overrated KK's abilities and her constant driving under the basket and losing the ball is getting annoying. Another thing I've noticed is that in at least 3 games opponents guards have come up with double digit rebounds against UConn. Hildago at 5'6 getting 10 rebounds and driving the lane is unbelievable. They can still win the Big East and I think they will. The only think they really have to worry about is Emma Rosiek (sic) getting 20 rebounds.

Hidalgo scored her points when Nika was not guarding her. PaoPao the same only 3 in 2nd half. The other early season losses the team had Azzi, Aubrey she wasn’t the primary defender on the other guards then.

A LOT of people forget that Uconn is missing players who would normally be starting. Geno is playing his freshman to get the experience they need in March since Amari is useless when she plays anyway..They had a bad shooting night from both Paige and Ashlynn. Nika didn't help with her 5 turnovers. They needed to play a perfect game with limited turnovers and they didn't. I expect uconn to go deep into the Ncaa's... There are a lot of negative comments about the coach for no reason if they follow UCONN basketball. The man has only won 11 NCAA titles..Find someone who is even close to him.....I won't be surprised if they make the final four.....Go huskies..

3:33 @Bittshitter You brought up a couple of Uconn big losses. Staley pissed away the championship last year. She had 9 WNBA draftees and couldn't beat a team with 1. Didn't know what to do or how to adjust. Also, they blew the game against Stanford in the finals. If Geno had the talent she has he would of won the last 5 titles. He's done it before. Staley can recruit but her coaching isn't the greatest. As far as Azzi goes. She has played greatcwhen healthy. The problem is her injuries. Last year she had a great start. Big games against Iowa and Texas and so on. Then Aaleya fell into her knee. She came back at the end but on 1 leg and couldn't help. This surgery might stop the injuries. It seemed to stop Paige's injuries so far. Jana looks to be a good player.

Paige is a doof. She fails her entire team every time she's needed she never shows up and contributes like all these other top players on other teams. Its like she's not even there. last year uconn lost to SC by 4 points and she didnt even play this year she did and they lose by 20. Says a lot about her overall talent obviously.
