Pagan Blot. What to Offer? Sources

Looking at the Norse pagan blots/sacrifice/offering and where they were practiced and what to leave as your offering. There are a few sources from medieval times that tell how the Norse pagan blot was historically practiced.
This is the fourth video in the series where I answer the 5 questions about blots so you can practice them in the most historically accurate way possible.

As I am not a farmer, and probably will not be in the near future, my sacrifices come from hunting and trapping. I always leave a portion of my score behind along with anything that would serve something else better than myself (usually the lower organs of smaller game), I did this long before I even considered myself a Norse Pagan. Not looking for correctness, but I'm curious on your thoughts about it in pertinence to alphablots and other offerings/sacrifices as opposed to ritualistic sacrifice or cooking it first.

Would freshly caught fish work as offering for the upcoming Skóklafallsdagr blót?

No meat in the summer seems odd even with the availability of other foods. Wouldnt they have hunted in the spring/summer months for winter supply. Ive never met a homesteader or farmer who solely relies on their livestock/garden for food.

There may not be a clear answer to this question, but what if you do have an animal to sacrifice, but you send it to a butcher to slaughter for you......if you request to have the blood from your animal saved and can then use that for an offering? My husband and I slaughtered our own meat chickens last year and I made an offering with their blood and a heart (plus some of what I had cooked that night) on Winter Nights. However, we are planning to start raising meat goats, for consumption and to sell at auction, as well as and some hogs for consumption. Those animals are a bit too large for us to manage the processing at home, so we were going to have them professionally butchered. I wonder if it’s ok to just offer the blood even if you didn’t butcher it yourself.

Perfect! I have done the same thing myself. Ideally we would have a temple, community and feast like old times. But what you are doing is as good as it can possibly get in this day and age. Great stuff!

@@norsemagicandbeliefs8134 Thanks!! It somehow felt a little like cheating to go to the butcher...but it’s definitely the most practical way in modern life.

I offer some of the fish I catch and some of the meat from deer that I harvest. I process my own. I have never really kept the blood but will this hunting season. I assume the meat has the same meaning/effect, not really sure. I do not belong to any group of sorts and do this on my own, in my own way. I feel very satisfied with what I receive from my "personal rituals" that I have in complete solitude with nature, mainly in the early hours of morning.

I have just a little yard space and do container gardening but sometimes I go for fishing. I clean the fish, if I get any at all by the river and then cook the FIS at home and use the bone dried and ground to fertilize the soil. Not only in the containers but randomly throw around the house. Never thought of it particularly as sacrifice but simply it feels the right thing or way to do. Plus it really good for the environment too.

for the start of summer one, it would make more sense if they were culling their herds. Where I'm from, if a sheep/cow/horse/goat/whatever didnt get pregnant, this would be clear around spring. So if they're a repeat offender, they get culled/slaughtered around spring/early summer. I'm german, tho im pretty sure everyone does this in some way to keep the herd healthy and fertile

I actually grow my own fruit and veg, chemical free. So no reason I can't use that right?! Although the two ravens that visit daily have totally destroyed my corn crop. Also I totally love your content. I have learnt so much from you. You are guiding me on my new path. I'm English following the Germanic ways.

later on the trader knew that placing a piece of gold was good enough .What you are saying is very very close to Black magic if knew anything about it .This deals with the Sumerian gods .Norse people were like people of today living life and fulfilling their. Virtues. When you say Althing that is NOT an alter it is a political circle to vote on laws .We say shrine as it more of personal thing to to tanks the gods. What most want to know is about the Vikings and daily Norse living like being craftspeople ,I am subed .

humans have been sacrificed all the time in the iron age. Just look at the bog mummies. They also killed slaves and servants to accompany a wealthy person to the afterlife. I call that human sacrifice.

Thats right. Bog mummies were something different though. They have discovered that in the last 15-20 years. But the accompanying a person to the afterlife is for sure a sacrifice I would say. Also a couple other mentions of sacrifice that I didn't mention in this video. Im gonna do a whole new video about that soon
