Thanks so much for this, I used this in OC1 training last night and what a difference! A question I did have was how to keep yourself upright rather than hunched over - any tips?

Theres a video on posture for free on the youtube here if you search for it :) squeeze your shoulder blades together, push your belly button to the bow, sit on your sit bones like a bar stool... those are a few good cues to help keep the torso upright then you can pump the legs/hips to get the motion for the stroke.

Are you referring to the KZread video "John Puakea teaches canoe paddling technique" because he teaches using no positive blade angle that it sets up an incorrect catch

I have watched Johnny’s video many times and that is not what he says. He emphasizes getting a clean catch (no cavitation), the importance of getting the paddle into the water at a positive blade angle (not in the air) and not applying full power to the stroke until the blade is fully submerged (to avoid cavitation). The thing is as the boat is moving forward when you make your entry the blade angle is constantly becoming less positive and as you gradually apply power, maximum power application will be during the phase of the stroke where the paddle shaft is near vertical. Note that when the paddle shaft is vertical there is still a positive blade angle because of the offset.

@@fyrftrhawaii I watched johns video again. When I first watched it, I was just beginning to paddle and probably didn't fully understand it. Around the 6:30 mark, when he says "just go in," it seemed like he was suggesting that reaching is a waste of time and that you don't get a proper catch by reaching too far out. I like how you explained it though, that a positive blade angle would still be the case because of the offset. It just looks like John isn't bothered by reaching too far when this video says otherwise (could be mistaken)
