Pacing my 64 year old father to run a SUB 22 5K
Running a SUB 22 5K, at parkrun or any 5K race, is not an easy task. After my father, Steve recently turned 64, he asked me to pace him for a 5K to test his current running fitness. A 16:30 runner back in his day, Steve can still produce very respectable times for his age category.

@@MijinLaw sorry man with all respect. we all have our time goals. but I ran 18.15 at 65 and I am trying to run sub 18 that is what i consider fast. so i have a different starting point for the word fast. But i will be the first to applaus if someone beats the 30min in a parkrun. i am very supportive to all runners, but i am not using the word fast often.

Nah you are just 'very fast' but this man is 'fast'. What percentage of people run a sub 22 in a 5k race? If it wasn't fast, everyone would run sub 22, but they don't. Your comment is demeaning and you know it is. You probably just never bested his 5k pb. 🙈
Turned 70 late 2022 and hadn't run much at all for a decade. I was a fairish runner and managed a few age cat prizes in my late 50's. I wasn't prepared for the harsh decline in speed. If I had continued my running career, I'd have noticed the slowing pace over the years. Ah well. Trying to break the 24:00 barrier for a parkrun. Last 3 have been 24:03 24:03 24:04 I'll get there sometime this year hopefully.

Congratulations to your dad and well done on pacing him. I find following a pacer who is running at a comfortable pace very difficult when I'm on my limit. I have to run by myself without anyone pressurizing me. Last year (Aged 60) I managed a Sub 20 parkrun over in Denmark at Amager Strandpark. Like your dad, I was a fast runner back in the day.

I am always inspired the most by those 50 and above. As I age myself as an athlete, still younger (36) but no longer 22 either. I have the utmost inspiration for those 60 and older, it’s incredibly admirable and provides a blue print that this is achievable. Local runner around here, 70 years old, still clocks regular 22-23 minute 5ks, that’s just amazing. I follow the OG on strava, he runs 30-35 hilly mpw like clock work! Got to love it.

Thanks Harry. Entertaining and educational as ever. For the record, I started jogging aged 64 (late 2015) and I'm really missing parkrun as I can't get anywhere near my PB of 23:38, which I set last November. We usually have pacers at Southampton, which is helpful, but I think I need what passes for competition at parkruns to get that extra va, va voom. Curiously, I ran my first sub-55 minute 10k in August -- on a routine training run! Whatever, congratulations to Steve. I appear to be getting faster (for the time being) but I can't see myself doing 5k under 22 minutes in this lifetime.

I'm 5 years older than Steve and lost the desire to race after many years of age-group racing and a move to include cycling as low impact cross-training. Currently I mostly run indoors on a manual curved AssaultRunner Pro TM connected to Zwift on which I can manage a 23:45 5 km.
