During the 30 year civil war in Sri Lanka in the 90's we had no TV, no electricity and no food. But as kids, we used to collect old batteries and operate a small radio and would wait till they played this song at 9.55pm everynight before the local news. The war is now over and the country is peaceful; but nothing can takeaway the memories this song brings. I never knew the name of the song, neither the name of the composer and nether did I know the song was 400 years old. When the batteries run out of power, we leave it in the sun to charge, as we couldn't afford to buy. Listening to this song, was our only happiness during the war. Our tummies were empty, but our hearts were full.

I've heard this song many years ago and couldn't find what it was until 3 years or so. Upon rehearing it over and over it gave me thought that this must be the sound of love and life how it passes us by in all good and sad moments. While this performance by Nippon New Philharmonic Orchestra is amazing on its own, for me it's illustrated perfectly in this Japanese commercial: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqKDuamPc7iwp5s.html Hope you'll like it and all the best from Poland! P.S.: In the comment there is description of what they say though these words no matter the language express same.

This piece of music had a profound effect on my life. I was going through a very turmoiling time in my life where I cried non stop for a week and I wouldn't sleep because I was afraid to die. Then my music teacher played this song for me and it was as if God was saying don't be afraid I have set a place for you. I suddenly stopped crying and I am no longer afraid. This piece of music is a gift from God through the most amazing composer in history.

You are right. It is one of the best versions I have heard. Like you, it is very emotional for me. I am walking down the aisle more than 30 years ago, a fairy tale wedding of epic proportion. And I am remembering it falling apart two years later, remembering the violence. But I was blessed even then, blessed to have my son, who has been the sun, the moon, and the stars in my sky. A gift like no other.

The movie featured Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore, two prominent actors of that era. Did you know, that Pechebel’s canon in D was an obscure, unknown composition found in a German church from the 1690’s? That was 300 years ago. It was discovered by accident in the 1900s and slowly gained popularity. Legend says this tune was originally composed as a wedding march for the composer’s wife or the wife of a friend. The reason why it is so beautiful is because the composer was in love when he made the tune. And it comes across in the music. You feel what true love is.

That's not true. The original composition was made for chamber music, not orchestal music and it's tempo was much faster. In the 60's Francois Palliard made the slow version we know now. The original version even doesn't have its characteristic arpeggios. They were added on the Palliard version because some parts of the composition were borign while playing slow. Most of your comment is a fucking lie. Stop lying on the internet.

No. This song has 8 chords. Each chord can have up to 8 notes - on this piece, i can hear at least three notes per chord. Then each chord can have different order of notes - on this piece, I can hear many inversions. Then when the chords are played, there are many variations from one chord set to the next. It it was 8 notes over and over, it would be “un-listenable”

This completely changed how I look at classical and to this day, I still listen to this piece over and over. It will be my absolute favourite piece till I am gone. Also there are a lot of versions out there as we know, and many played by different countries and by different orchestra company. This is one of the absolute best by far. More composed/together and sounds better. Well done to the Japanese for playing it so well.

German composer of the Baroque era Johann Pachelbel is best known for his Canon in D, a popular piece of classical music that has become one of the most recognized and frequently performed compositions in the world. 1:01 [Hello Music Theory]

When and where Pachelbel's Canon originated, and why exactly he composed it, is largely a mystery to music historians. It dates to the late-17th or early 18th century, and there's speculation that it was written as a gift for the wedding of Johann Sebastian Bach's older brother, who studied with Pachelbel. The word “canon” comes from the Greek kanṓn, for “rule” or “standard.” In canons, the general rule is this: one voice plays the melody, and after some interval of time, the second voice plays the same melody, then the third voice, and so on. In Pachelbel’s score, while the three upper voices play lofty melodies, the bass voice, typically performed on the cello, is stuck playing a pattern of just eight notes over and over, and over, for 27 repetitions in total. 2:02 [WQXR]

Baroque musical genres include both vocals and instrumentals, with the only difference being they were quite larger in number of categories than those of in the renaissance era.

It was in the Baroque era - roughly 1600-1750 - that the notion of the orchestra really came into its own, and composers started to layer instruments up in complex polyphony - different musical parts - and harmony. [Classic FM]
