The village has documented origins back to the 8th or 9th centuries, but the area was known as a mountain retreat since Roman times. Pacentro is one of several towns in the area with a medieval castle due to its position.
The original castle was controlled by the Counts of Valva. There are writings of the era that mention a certain "Gualterio, son of Manerio, Count of Valva", who lived in the Castle of Pacentro in 1130.
Another resident of Pacentro was Pope Celestine V. This pope, originally known as Pietro da Morrone, was a 13th-century monk-hermit of the Benedictine order who lived in a cave in the nearby mountains and was renowned for his holiness.
He was elected pope by acclamation in L'Aquila in 1294, but was the only pope to resign after a reign lasting only several months. His image can be seen on a medieval fresco in a lunette on the facade of the Church of San Marcello in Pacentro.
Through its history, the town was successively in the feudal domain of several powerful families; first Caldora from 13th century, then Orsini, then De Sanctis, further on Colonna and then Barberini.
The last one was the family Recupito di Raiano whose family lost their feudal rights with the abolition of feudalism by King Joseph Bonaparte in 1806.

Dear Riccardo, I greatly enjoyed the tour of the Castle. It was quite interesting to see the display of the shields on the walls in the hall. I was wondering if they represent the coat of arms of prominent families? The view from the tower was quite breath-taking and the ringing of the bells added to the ambience of that moment. Riccardo, we enjoyed this film much more than expected from the intro (to be honest). One minor critical point is that that view with the bells from 44:40 onwards...it's so beautiful, it should have been at the beginning, and would have captured a million viewers. It's like the Cinemascope opening of a great and classic movie (sorry if that sounds a bit much, but it's really what we said to each other when watching).

Good point Guys, and thank you as always... I agree with you about the bells actually. I even considered actually "cutting" that long part thinking it wouldn't be so intresting?? Instead... so SO glad I left it as it was, it truly is something peculiar and so charming. There's always something mystical about Abruzzo towns which I find actually only here. I don't know exactly... but they are somehow "different" in their soul. Didn't know the region much, even though I live nearby... but I'll continue exploring it much further and deep into other tiny towns as well. Always glad for your words and Support my friends. Caro Omar, obrigado por sua mensagem e que bom que gostou do passeio. Bela cidade de fato nesta deslumbrante região de Abruzzo. A caminhada começa perto da Praça Umberto I! Não é uma cidade grande, pode ser visitada em uma tarde. Você está planejando ir para lá?

Another 👍of Italy 🇮🇹 as well as the drone view at the beginning remember when you take your drone to another country follow the rules on where you can fly from or otherwise police 👮‍♀️ will say to you by by drone. My Christmas 🎄 present !!! after the police 👮‍♀️ takes it. 👍 walk and the view to. Get use to the 🔔 if you buy a home in 🇮🇹 even though the dogs was trying to bark louder at time 40:58. Plus then it reminded me of Kelly’s Hero’s WW2 movie . Do you use a map on your cell?? For the streets?? 🔔the Bells 🔔 👍🇮🇹📸

Ciao Bruce, oh no don't worry , I am a full licensed drone operator (with license to fly in critical and non-critical operations) since 2017, I in fact always check beforehand... not possible for instance in Rome and in bigger cities, but love drones! Yup I use a map, but many times it's useless as the little streets aren't visible there... it's so narrow that sometimes I just wander about actually. But it's always nice to discover this way the tiny towns. Glad you liked the bells... I couldn't stop there. Wish you a nice Sunday Bruce

Grazie mille Luigi, davvero stupendo Pacentro.

  • @StillWanderer

That's a question so tough to answer AC... Maybe I would make a top 10 perhaps but it's difficult... I was seriously in love with a town .... Fara in Sabina, don't ask me why though as it's tough!. It's in the channel, walked there long ago. As much as there are amazingly beautiful towns like in the Amalfi coast and all... I found myself so in love there for some reason. But there are several...great question.. I'll think about it in the future
