It does make perfect sense. A man like Escobar would not want to risk being killed by his enemies, as this would tarnish his reputation and history would paint him as the loser. And the police would much prefer to take him alive and parade him around, as that would give them far more satisfaction than killing him. He would end it on his own terms before they got the chance so that he could deny them the satisfaction. My best guess is that he probably took a few hits in the initial exchange of gunfire when they breached the door, then once he realized his wounds had made it impossible to escape he made the final decision. And because history is written by the ones who are still alive when the dust settles, the Colombian police found the wound in his ear and in a bid to preserve their ego, told the press that one of their own fired the last shot. Of course they'd want people to think they won a gunfight against the most powerful man on their continent, if people knew the truth then the legend of Escobar would have been made far more influential than it was and it would have certainly been a significant embarrassment for the police.

@@allwrighty100 the colombian government was reading the secret communications between Esvobar and his family. His son was ordering roasted chicken from a place directly across the street from the almost vacant apartment complex his family was kept by the government for their protection (apartments normally used by the members of the colombian Congress, but they were on a holiday recess). The investigators noticed a guy visiting that restaurant every day and found out he was from Medellín. The guy threatened the owners to collaborate sending messages delivered by him inside the chickens, the colombian government was reading them before they were delivered and were able to convince the magazine to help with this "tell-all" that Escobar was discussing with his son. The magazine was telling them if was important to tell the story asap and that caused the long communications.

To be honest here, the chance that a bullet would find its way to his right ear isn't small considering the fact that he was being shot at from multiple angles and by multiple officers at the same time. The fact that he has a bullet wound on the right side of his head is not proof that he killed himself when you consider the situation on the ground. Sure, it is still possible that he did, but at the end of the day, it is not impossible that it was a coincidence that one of the hundreds of bullets that were being shot found its way to his right ear.

Not saying that it happened that way but I would argue there is a diffrence between being in a house that is surrounded by police (he was used to those situations, left his own prison while the army was storming it) and being injured by gunshots on a rooftop with no escape route and no bodyguards. He probably tried his best to get away and when he had the chance to atleast take his own life he went for that option. Also I don't think that him escaping custody would be realistic because they would have extradited him to the US immediately.. I am saying this because that's exactly what they did to the Cali guys a few years after.

thank you everyone for your thoughtful replies. there are 2 versions of Pablo Escobar's death depending on the 2 visions of Pablo Escobar. Escobar is a romantic hero to some. His suicide as his last act seems an honorable way to go, depriving the cops of the last word. the other side sees him as a vicious criminal that eluded and bribed authorities for years while kingpinning a huge lethal drug cartel. this group wanted him dead, thus the kill shot in the ear. it would be easy to prove one story while debunking the other by an autopsy. the distance from the head of the muzzle, muzzle burns and powder stains, the caliber of the bullet and the angle of entry would be conclusive proof one way or the other. Lacking this evidence, the legend of Pablo Escobar continues.

As well as all that, the idea that he was shot by an unnamed, anonymous person in the official version also casts some doubt on it. It could be that they didn't want to be named.... But even after all these years? I think it's possible they wrote it that way so that Escobar didn't "win" by dying on his own terms. It subtracts from their glory somewhat. And they didn't want to give him that. Definitely possible.
@Void7.4.14 Жыл бұрын
So, first off, Los Pepe wasn't some "rag tag group of civilians", family. They were spearheaded by far-right, US backed (armed, trained, and funded) paramilitary forces. They were basically another army that worked closely with US agents and Escobar's rival cartels. The civilian involvement was more a PR move where they took the real anger of civilians and hid behind it to commit atrocities. The TV show Narcos, and others, BADLY overplayed how much of the cartel, his money, his men, etc, were gone at the end. He was still very rich and powerful when he died. The cartel was massive and while they did put a dent in it, it was far from done. Most went on to continue doing the same thing other another name. What had been compromised beyond repair was his reputation and relationships within the government, police, and military, and without that it was difficult to operate. If he'd had kept a low profile he may still be alive and free today. But his name being known by people in DC was a death sentence. There's also good reason to believe that he gave up his location and told his family things they already knew, making constant phone calls to his son who he previously told "the phone is death" to take the heat off them and kill himself. He was shot in the exact place he taught others to kill themselves to avoid capture. He had been shot in the back and at that point probably knew there was no escape and rather than be captured, humiliated, brutalized and tortured he very well may have shot himself. Many people believe this to be the case, even those very close to the situation on both sides including law enforcement. He swears to never surrender, never be caught, that phones are insafe, and says he'll off himself very specifically, and the day after his birthday he makes a bunch of calls he knows are dangerous to tell his son things he already knows and winds up dead taking the heat off of everyone and everything he knows and cares about. I can't say with certainty either way, but I lean towards him ending his own life once escape proves impossible and the authorities wanted the win for themselves so they fabricated the other story OR a single LEO said they killed him after finding him dead.

@@stevemill8959 the truth is that los Pepes were receiving bootleg copies of DEA reports that were passed to them by the Colombian government with the US government looking the other way. The were not funded by the US government, they were funded by the Cali cartel. This groups were initially put together by wealthy farmers from land at the countryside near Medellín. They were legally formed (I even remember an Archbishop having mass and blessing them during the ceremony of creation of the group). They were created to protect those guys from the lefty supported guerrillas. The guys in charge hate the lefties, because they kidnapped their sister. They were also trained by a Israeli mercenary named Yair Klein. After a while, these paramilitary groups became mercenaries offering their services to the party with the best offer ($). Sometimes they were "working" for military intelligence.
@adrienpartier7207
Жыл бұрын
@@CarlosVargas-dv6ph what's missing in that almost complete picture is that these paramilitaries did far more than merely "protecting" wealthy landowners and associating themselves with drug cartels. From the 1970s to the 2000s, with government backing and US logistical support and training, they went on a rampage murdering labor union leaders, human rights activists, students, journalists, left-wing politicians, and basically any person deemed a "subversive" who threatens established privileges and the prevailing social order, while slaughtering tens of thousands of poor peasants and villagers in the process.

This story is the one showing in Narcos, a few details are not accurate. Escobar was responding an about 50 question interview that a magazine sent to his son.

Sure, it is still possible that he did, but at the end of the day, it is not impossible that it was a coincidence that one of the hundreds of bullets that were being shot found its way to his right ear.

i have heard of this final showdown, but it varied in some detail. the other version corroborates that his wounds on the rooftop were incapacitating, but not life threatening. the task force knew if he recovered in custody, he would formulate another escape. so they gave him a kill shot in the ear. if he wanted to commit 'suicide by cop," why did he run instead of shooting it out in the room?

I tend to believe he committed suicide, because why would he make a phone call yet he knew any phone call to his family was being tapped?
God bless you all and your families 🙏🏽

He was doing well until he allied with the communists. The US doesnt really give too many fucks about the cartel - hell the US supported RIGHT WING cartels in other south american countries as long as they destabilized and opposed leftist governments. Mind you this during the wider context of the cold war. All the major cartels today, especially the ones in Mexico the United States has a large hand in creating. Pablo's mistake was allying with the wrong people. Otherwise - He could've kept going

It depends how you run your operation. If you stay in the shadows and keep playing smart, it’s definitely possible to be ok. The government can only look away for so long, when everything is in the public eye

I think that no one would raise his voice in his nation for some of his own terms. But he died for his beliefs. he helped a lot of people regardless of what they say, there were also civilian deaths, he opposed Colombia and America alone. don't look at who or how many he killed, look at how many he helped and what he did throughout Colombia. but the habit was to look only at the bad, the good, you simply forgot them...
He just want to talk with his son. He knows everything. Just on his special day, he wants his family. Bad person, but good dad
Of the many documentaries i have read and seen. Behind his cruelty, Pablo is a person who really loves his family and always puts his family first. So i think its true that he committed suicide at his last moment

Lol had an ad for fajitas before the vid 😂 after watching vid on el chapo
As well as all that, the idea that he was shot by an unnamed, anonymous person in the official version also casts some doubt on it. It could be that they didn't want to be named.... But even after all these years? I think it's possible they wrote it that way so that Escobar didn't "win" by dying on his own terms. It subtracts from their glory somewhat. And they didn't want to give him that. Definitely possible.

This makes sense. They definitely preferred taking him alive. Extraditing Chapo was huge for the U.S.

There’s actually a documentary talking about this and forensic evidence shows the suicide theory to not be true because if the gun was held to his head gun powder would be all over his face and this was not the case
