Paavo Järvi: Conducting The Future (2021)
Estonian Grammy Award-winning conductor Paavo Järvi serves as Chief Conductor of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo, and Artistic Director of Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. He founded the Estonian Festival Orchestra and the Järvi Academy, where he works with young conductors from all over the world but mainly supports young talents from Estonia.
Julia Kaiser spoke with him for the series 'Conducting the Future'.

It's true Maestro Järvi, people can't tell the difference between what's good and what's a bad performance. I see that every time a performance by so-called "sought after artists" which failed the professional standards still being approved by the majority audience as "great" because they can't tell the difference. One main reason is because the education system failed to deliver. We have many degree holders, even sometimes PHDs but don't seem to even have the fundamental skill a music educator should have and these people are teaching the future generation. Where I am, people in the region justify sub par education as "music for fun". What kind of future can the professional standards hold itself, if there is lesser demand for gold standards because of ignorance? That was how I stopped believing...
