@@livinglife8333Last year I planted mine in a 5 gal bucket. I drilled a lot of drainage holes in the bottom and a few on the sides. They were nice potatoes. My previous attempt had failed because to much moisture.

My dad grew up poor on a farm during the Depression. On their property, they had a big root cellar that you could stand in. Inside, they had built wooden frames to hold the potatoes that had been dug. They would throw lime on them, just as Mr Brown recommended. They would keep for a long time! I’m so glad you didn’t run into any snakes while you were digging! ❤-Brenda

Oh my goodness, my grandparents were farmers, and I would do anything to live on a farm, I'm fascinated by it. It I love the history of it, and I'm not afraid of hard work!!!, I had a customer that used to bring me potatoes from his garden, and I love the smell of the fresh soil dirt. Dirt. I never knew the work that went into it when it came to finding them picking them digging them up. I truly appreciate Farmers always have. I miss my grandparents😢😞🤗🤗💜🩷☺️🥔

I've mostly waited till the vines are at least partially died back. I only dug them earlier if getting excess rain to avoid them rotting. You might gently dig up under a plant to see what's going on, but as long as the plants are green and you're watering when needed, they may be fine for awhile.

Yukon golds are my favorite although grandpa and my mom never grew them. I believe they may have planted kennebec. Grandpa had a huge potato patch. He would plow them out (with a horse and walk behind plow). We would follow and throw them onto the sled to bring them back to the house and let “cure” before toting them by buckets and buckets into the cellar where we’d dump them into a couple huge potato bins. Mom also plowed or dug her long rows out and she too had a nice cellar to keep them in. Of course when you plow them out, a few may get cut…. We just saved them to eat soon. I surely miss those days.

We love homegrown potatoes because they taste much better than store bought.

My grandson and I are going to store a few in the ground as an experiment. Read about it in a Foxfire book using straw. Cool that you mention as well.
