P+S Technik EVOLUTION 2X Anamorphic Lenses
A montage, shot on Arri Alexa with P+S Technik EVOLUTION 2X anamorphic lenses. We used the 40mm and 75mm, paired with Tiffen's Rota Variable ND filter tray.
These lenses are based on Kowa's original anamorphic lens design. They have a distinctive look, particularly the 40mm, flare beautifully and are relatively lightweight, as anamorphic lenses go. P+S Technik have done a good job on the housing, as the focus and aperture are nice and smooth, and the gears are ubiquitous across the range of focal lengths.
Everything was shot in Log C and then graded in Davinci Resolve.

I love the look, the vignetting adds so much character to the footage! Which camera and aspect ratio did you use?

@@GafferVan Because of the vignetting (at the 40mm?) it should have been the LF right?
outstanding

Amazing video! I wanted to know do you have any idea how much the 40mm and 75mm cost? Was curious but there's not alot of info on their website. Thank you!
Nice work. Did you use any lens correction in post for distortion on the 40mm? When framing characters on the sides?
@GafferVan

Thanks. No I didn't do any lens correction. The edge distortion of the 40mm can be brutal, I'm not sure any amount of Post could correct for this entirely. Nonetheless, It's part of the unique look of this lens, so I just embraced it.
Outstanding! Which Alexa did you use?

hey man, was wondering what apertures this stuff's shot at - is this wide open?

Hey. I don't recall exactly but likely t3.5 - t5 something in that range.
Looks nice. Did you shoot the 40mm wide open? Is this on Vimeo?
@GafferVan

Cheers. Yes, we shot wide open on some of the medium/CUs on the 40mm, and in the lower light and controllable environments. Yep, there's a version on Vimeo as well.

Beautiful shoot! Great Rendering on those lenses but that edge distortion is harsh.

I personally like the distortion! I think it adds to the unique look.
How about the Tiffen's Rota Variable ND filter?

It's an excellent filter for a lot of shooting conditions, and it was particularly fast and efficient to use. In extreme high DR environments, such as low Sun daytime exteriors, you should avoid stopping down with it too aggressively. As the nature of a double polariser can do some wacky things in the corners of the frame. These effects becomes more noticeable the stronger the level of ND you dial-in.

@@user-ej7vk1qw2i Thank you! I grade in Davinci Resolve. I don't do anything special, I just go with what looks appealing to my eye on any given day. Some of the shots have a digital bleach bypass style preproduction added, but only at 30% so it's subtle. For this, I add a monochrome node, play around with individual RGB values, and then composite this with the original colour grade via a Softlight or Overlay blend mode, and dial-in the opacity to what I like.

No, Evolution 2X lenses are anamorphic lenses that are completely new and re-engineered designs of the rare and vintage Kowa anamorphic lenses from the 1970's. They are based on the original optical design with completely new mechanics and sturdy housing and they match the genuine anamorphic look of the originals.
