Like we say… this is hardly a "to own lens". Good for rental if you need a light one. No, we only tested this 50mm

The Kowa lens..I don't know, who would need such an expensive lens outside of major Hollywood studio? Kowa has an amazing history, their lenses incorporate rare Earth elements hence the outlandish cost and outstanding color and low contrast rendition. If I wanted a Kowa lens (not anamorphic), I'd re-purpose/adapt one from my film camera. Luckily many old Kowa film cameras can be had for a song on Ebay.

The Kowa may be expensive from you perspective, for an anamorphic cine lens it is relatively cheap. This lens is built by a german company and supplied by a german rental house… telling you that there is a need far beyond "Hollywood". Rare-earth elements are despite their name relatively plentiful in Earth's crust… your phones electronics probably contain some. Neither Kowa nor any other lens manufacturer has ever used "magic" ingredients. Depending on the time, vintage lenses may contain Lead or Thorium… but that is another subject. Cine lenses in general don't use different glas compared to their photo counterparts. The fast price difference can be found in the low numbers that can be sold and the resulting manual labor needed. R&D has to be split between fewer lenses.

@@MediaDivision There is no arguing about Kowa's quality or its cost justification for someone who can afford to pay top dollar for a really, really good lens. I wonder what Indie film makers would go to, say Kowa, and not to Canon's L-series lens? Fluorite vs Thorium :) Thanks for the video!

Kowa does not provide better quality than other manufacturers. It is just that you can't get this specific lens design from another source. You can use Canon L no problem... but Canon does not have any anamorphic lenses. Thorium is illegal these days... for every manufacturer. Don't worry about exotic glass spiking, it makes a difference for the lens designer but no meaningful difference for you. Our pleasure Red
