Don't know how to read tablature? No problem! Check out my quick and easy lesson: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dICn1pR8qLTfYsY.html
So did Randy Rhoads actually recorded the guitars THREE times and it still sounds so tight? Jesus, he is truly a master.
Really appreciate the KZreadrs out there who do the research in order to break down a song meticulously. Also appreciate the fact that you acknowledge that sometimes even the isolated recording can still be hard to make out, and so you have to make educated guesses.

Hey thanks for the nice comment. To your point, I always make sure to call out where I may be making assumptions or guesses. In addition, if ever see lots of people consistently playing it a different way than me, I like to call that out too... that way the person watching can decide which way to play it, for themselves. Rock on! :)
I love the on screen tabs. Often I’ll take a screen shot of it and have it handy.

You are welcome, Darrell. Comments like that make my day :)
Awesome job with the solo! I have heard it so many hundreds of times and just listened to the isolated track and you got it.
My man! Where was this when I needed it 20 years ago (gawd, I can't believe it's been that long...)? This was spot on! When I clicked on this I did not expect it to be anything close to note for note, but I must say, if it ain't, it's at least close enough that if I heard this without knowing (at least the solo portion), actually would have thought this was the original track! And I have a good ear for these kinds of things, and have only listened to it (perhaps literally) a million times. It sounds _just_ like it! THANKS! This one earned an immediate subscription. Be blessed, my friend. Rock on!
Very good for a headless guitarist ! Randy still my favorite after all this years

Great work, well thought out tab.
I read an interview where Randy Rhoads said he used his pick instead of his fingers to tap this solo. I love how you broke it down, I’ve been playing parts of this solo wrong for years.
@jasonjones7461
3 жыл бұрын
I use the pick to tap on this. It sounds clearer imo and it's too hard to either use middle finger to tap or put pick in my mouth which takes far too much time for any human other than Joe Satriani somehow. Do whatever works best, long as it sounds good it's correct

awesome stuff dude, good to clarify I'm not the only one who thought he was using a tremolo on those trills!Amazing tone btw
Outstanding! I never stopped playing but for whatever reason I hadn't attempted this for 12+ years. I happened to catch a great video of somebody playing it close up and I jumped and said wait I know how to do that stuff. I found your video, literally 10 min later and I've got it all but the last low to high cascade bit because I'm admittedly not great at playing fast lead parts up on high frets on Low E and A strings. I have huge hands and it's just a hand cramping mess, so I reworked it onto G and B strings where I can stretch out and just zip right up the neck which I am good at. Other than that your video was perfect for me. Thank you for your part in fulfilling a lifelong childhood wish of playing that damn solo. Keep the vids coming. Ill be onto Mr Crowley soon.
thank you so much :)
@2:10 You're correct. Everybody seems to forget he does those hammer ons & pull-offs before he starts tapping. So many people don't pick up on that. Good job!

GREAT! Your lessons are always awesome. The moments when you tell to feel the notes is something real, i mean most of the times the old generations of guitar players just felt it and went for it, the results are still impressive. Sometimes when you get too much scientific about notes you lose the soul of the whole thing. PLEASE DO MORE VIDEOS. CAN YOU MAKE SOMETHING OF VAN HALEN BALANCE IN TERMS OF SIMULATING THAT TYPE OF SOUND?
@PDXguitarfreak
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I agree with you 100%. My favorite soloing moments are those where I just let go and play and something cool happens. Of course, recreating those cool moments is often impossible LOL. As for creating tones, I'm not sure I am going to do any more POD videos, unless they miraculously release some new amps for the HD500, which I can't imagine happening since Line6 moved on to the Helix a few years ago. I appreciate your comment Oscar. Rock on!
@IDNNYIDNNY
6 жыл бұрын
Ok i understand your point on Line6. Look if you have some time to give a listen to Zakk Wylde #Live and Loud Album with Ozzy# There is something i find in his sound at that time that reminds me too of Van Halen sound i'm looking for. I just dont know what it is but the sound has a body, its very rich sound. The tone. If you could help me to identify what they may have in common in their rigs who could give that body to the sound. If have the time. MANY MANY THANKS! KEEP STUFF UP.
This is the closest I’ve seen to a correct version. But nobody seems to take into account that there are two guitars on the lead part. You can hear it on isolated solo version that is up on KZread. When I used my amazing slow downer app and panned hard left and hard right I discovered that there are two guitars on the solo. This is especially apparent at the end of the solo. That fast lead part at the end sounds different depending on which speaker you are listening to. I transcribed it by ear and came up with two different endings. There are also differences during the section of the solo where he is doing fast hammer on’s and pull offs up the first string. What a player Randy was! Hats off. He improvised a lot. So I’m sure he recorded one take right after the other and got fairly close but never played that solo the same way twice. No wonder it’s so confusing for people.
Love your tutorial. Sounds great. My only question is about the odd note in the last phrase that doesn’t fit the F# minor scale. The D# on D string.

You're a great guitarist man, I know the recording has 3 tracks and is basically impossible to replicate live but you definitely impressed me. I was watching different guitarists play this solo live and the ones that came closest to Randy are honestly you and Zakk Wylde. I was shocked that Bucketheads version was a little off, I expected perfection from him. What really surprised me is how terribly Slash played it! I expected him to come close but he didn't! It was so awful, he didn't even do any of the tapping at the beginning and the rest sounded like he didn't bother to even try, and to top it off it was in front of Ozzy!
Anyone know What model charvel is that? Looks great
@PDXguitarfreak
9 ай бұрын
It's a Charvel DK24. The guitar and video are from about 5 years ago, and the DK24 is a bit different now. If you want one with a Floyd Rose, the body is now Mahogany (previously Alder), and the neck pickup is now a Duncan Alnico II Pro (previously Duncan Jazz). Pickups are now black too. Also, the finish is now Dark Amber quilted maple top, as opposed to the black I had. Quite a few changes.
Wonder why the key change from F# Aeloian to F# Dorian for the last ascending phrase? Even the underlying rhythm doesn't use a Eb iirc.

Man I am loving these comments, I need to find some guitar friends to talk to irl lol. Same way Satch (Joe satriani) does Satch Boogie on a LP junior once. Just slight changes. I do this solo on my double humbucker telecaster just fine, only weirdness is on that first trill where he drops it down. I actually do a bend and tap trill with the pick as I let the bend back down. It's much more effort but very similar
I remember back in the day, the critics said Randy's solos wouldn't work live because of the double and triple tracking on the albums. Then Tribute came out, and the critics shut the fuck up. Too bad he died before seeing them eat their words.

Hi Joe, according to producer Max Norman, Randy using both the LP and the polka dot (Karl Sandoval) V on Blizzard. Perhaps you are thinking of the Jackson V that was still to come? In fact, Karl Sandoval delivered the polka dot V to Randy in 1979, right before he landed the Ozzy gig.
