Ozymandias

Фильм және анимация

Clips from Breaking Bad's S05E14 "Ozymandias" over layed Bryan Cranston's reading of the poem "Ozymandias."
Content is owned by AMC, this is just a fan video because I was bored and it seemed like a neat idea.

The funny thing about Ozymandias is, the poem is about Ramesses II of the Nineteenth Dynasty, the greatest king of the New Kingdom of Egypt. Said kingdom is called that because it emerged from the ruins of the Middle Kingdom of Egypt, which itself emerged from the ruins of the Old Kingdom of Egypt. For Ramesses himself, the Great Pyramid of Giza was almost just as ancient as his "works" are to us. Also, Percy Shelley decided to write a poem based on a random classical text, eventually settling on an excerpt from Roman-era Greek historian Diodorus Siculus' book Bibliotheca historica, in which Diodorus describes the ruins of a monument presumably built by Ramesses, whom the Greeks knew as Ozymandias. So there's that whole other ancient civilisation, who themselves regarded the Egyptians as an ancient culture with a long-forgotten history, and which our Regency-era British poet regarded as high culture by their antiquity alone and worth emulating.

In a similar vein, I would like to state that Cleopatra was born closer to our time than she was to the building of the pyramids. People underestimate how old Egyptian Civilisation is. Also, the Romantics in general were obsessed by the past and frequently glorified it.

Despite this, his massive Empire eventually fell and so did his statue which esssentially says "I am Ramses II, the king of kings, if anyone wants to know how great I am let him try and surpass any of my works". It's pointing out the flawed behavior of people with power and how time will eventually conquer everything and everyone with little to no exception.

We were on holiday overseas and it was 11pm on a Saturday night and everyone else was out partying, but here we were... in our hotel room, setting up the laptop so we could watch the episode as soon as it came out. When we finished it we were too choked with emotion to leave the hotel that night.

I had to do this poem for essentially a look into the underlying meaning and thesis. I can see how this perfectly relates to the end of breaking bad because like the poem, even though Bryan Cranston becomes the biggest meth distributor by far, he is left with nothing in the end. Like Ozymandias whose accomplishments mean nothing because he is dead and history will roll over his name as evidence of the endless sands surrounding the broken statue.
