Oyster 495 On Test - 3 Days , 200 miles

Спорт

She might be the smallest in Oyster's range but there has a been a great deal of fuss made about this boat. She even has her own documentary series! So, to find out what she's really like, we set off on a 200mile, 3 day test to see what she's be like on a typical long weekend cruise.
Not only was it great to settle into finding out what made her tick without the pressure of a tight deadline, but we got to cruise some of my favourite areas in the Channel Islands.

I really like the guy running the presentation , the boat is really nice I’m sure it costs more than HR but then is far more modern. On 14:25 the drag those vertical port lights produce freaks me out though 🥴🥴

Thanks Matt, another great presentation. I love the 495. But the world is moving on from monohulls. I love our cruising catamaran and wouldn't swap it for any monohull. When Oyster start making cruising cats then I'd be pleased to place an order! Oyster is a great brand.

I sail an elderly ex charter First 501. The difference in performance between these yachts of similar size is amazing. Ok we have four cabins and four heads, ex charter layout, but how I would love this Oyster. One small problem, this 495 is probably 10 times the price of mine. Never mind, nice to dream and good to see Oyster flourishing. Great video 👍

I have a question about the Sail Drive. Why would anyone drill a huge hole in the bottom of the boat for no good reason?

the opening shots show the massive drag those side / below the heeled waterline windows are causing . The water pressure,s must be enormous..

Love the design , but imho a blue water cruiser needs solar/wind and a decent dingy storage like a garage or a davits

Looks like there's some drag on those seascape windows when heeled over, if they were flush there's maybe another 1/2 a knot there! 😁

Agree with some other comments. Disappointing to see no power source alternatives. Like solar, wind, hydro. No obvious facility for a tender is bizarre. I would get fed up fast, sailing through squalls or worse, without some sort of cover. On a boat this size, a water maker is essential and a small washer / drier would be a nice touch. Lastly and I may be nit picking admittedly. I believe where they placed the cup holders under the dodger might cause problems. Say you were lounging flat with your head closest to the bow. You put a mug of coffee etc in the cup holder and the boat does something to make the coffee go flying. I realise we often use cups with lids, but not always. Speaking of safety. I didn't see a life raft. I 'get' that all the options I've mentioned are probably on the extensive options list. Maybe if I was spending a million and change I wouldn't care about another £100k of 'essential' options.

Lovely boat - Well done Oyster. Altough the design (hull & rig) are almost idential to the Amel 50, it's interesting to see the different takes on the deck and interior layout. Oyster for family, Amel for solo/cruising couple? I'd say Oyster more of a sailors boat and the Amel more for long term cruising. I'll take either!

This boat & the A50 have nearly identical accommodation below & sailing systems above. I reckon either would shine equally with a family of just a couple. It really boils down to looks and maybe the options list. Oh, and the price. Equally equipped this boat will be about 1/3rd more than the Amel. (Appx $1.8MM vs $1.3MM)

Maybe if Oyster built racing yachts. All of those carry significant disadvantages on a cruising yacht.

For long transatlantic crossing, I don’t think I would choose this boat. Simply because in stormy weather, you are completely exposed. May not seem like a big deal until you have been hit with rain and wind for 5 days straight. It’s a big deal trust me.

Smallest model and price is the point. You can get everything you want for more money except a basic yacht. Just a observation.

Nice but can’t help but think that it isn’t really set up for long cruising. For example, plenty of space for two fuel filters to switch when one is clogged, but only one installed. Or a spayed that doesn’t extend past the first seat so you’ll still get a cold back in a rough night, could have just made it 20cm longer. Small details but I would have expected more.

Most boat builders don’t build boats specifically set up for blue water world cruising simply because most won’t buy the boat to do that! As is pointed out in this video, most will buy this boat and go away for weekends. In which case few will want or need dual fuel filters, but I would point out, as you did, they made provision for those who want to. Which is a positive rather than a negative - you have the option. As to the sprayhood, when you buy a new boat you choose what type you want and how big you want it. New boats don’t come with a one size fits all option. Your criticisms are pretty thin… 🤔
