    5.7 billion is lunch money. If u tax the American Person that is only taking 15 bucks from each person, lunch money he is right. The 2019 military budget is 716 billion for national security, $686 billion of which is for the Department of Defense. The Department of Education received about 68 billion in 2018. Healthcare would cost around 1000 bucks per month, per person, roughly 4,000 billion a year. The last number is my estimate, anyways lunch money, indeed, 15 bucks per American on our taxes going to a wall, which I do not support being an immigrant and a Democrat, regardless, lunch.

    People forget, there called entitlements because Americans are entitled to them. We pay into it everytime we get a check. That's the deal. It's social security INSURANCE, you pay for it now so it's there when you need it. Not complicated.

    @Dahn They aren't. Socialism is public ownership of the means of production. These programs aren't that. They are as Brianna notes above a form of insurance. Insurance basically works by leveraging the law of large numbers to allow individuals to mitigate large risks with modest individual fees. Insurance just plain works, both in capitalist and mixed economies. It's worth noting that in Europe where these types of national programs were first instituted this was done by conservatives. Unions offered these types of insurance and it became a major reason for people joing the union and often the workers parties as well. In Germany Bismark took retirement, health insurance and disability from the unions and banned the social democratic party. In France these programs were nationalized by the Moderate Republicans (nice summed up by Wikipedia as " centre-right, law and order and vaguely anti-labour", well sometimes french does translate really well it seems). In the UK the Liberal Party (in the classical sense of liberal, closer to libertarians in the Us as people called liberals in modern US parlance) tried to stay a major political force as labor started to rise.

    It's a ponzi scheme though. That money wasn't set aside for when you need it, it was used to pay the people at the top of the scheme (The retirees of that time). It's actually more like a welfare program with an age limit.

  • @WarrenCrum

    @WarrenCrum

    The problem with entitlements, whether that’s the word you want to use or not, is that not everybody that receives them pays into them. In regards to the specific program you mention it should be noted that during the Bush administration there was a push to allow Social Security insurance to be privatized for individual citizens the way that elected officials and federal employees were allowed to privatize their Social Security deductions. If they’re truly our individual accounts that we pay into, then why can’t we choose what to do with these retirement investments? It’s because the money that supposed to pay for these services is in fact used as a piggy bank by our government. My personal opinion on Social Security insurance is that, since money that is currently being taken out of working peoples paychecks is going directly to recipients of the insurance because their deposits were spent long ago on non-related programs, my generation (I’m 42) should pay for it until we retire and then get nothing, but our children shouldn’t have to pay into it at all. It should be put to a complete end.

    @arti , Google it! Bernie Sanders has always been a self-proclaimed Independent Socialist who, like Trump did in the GOP, saw an opportunity to hijack the Democratic Party in pursuit of his self-serving political glory. Differently from Trump, his coup failed. As Democratic Socialism is not part of the DNP platform. No matter how much Sanders attempts for people to think the DNP "Social Responsibility" principles translate to Socialism, he will not succeed. In direct contrast with the GOP, the far left of the DNP will not embrace any anti-democratic doctrines. Sanders needs to create his own party. After all, his failed "hostile takeover" and extreme (unrealistic) socialist views have already split the DNP vote.

    As a transgender woman I don’t find cross dressing by straight people to be offensive. There’s a difference between having fun and being derogatory or mean towards others. Tootsie wasn’t offensive. The scene in the bar in Crocodile Dundee when he grabbed the trans woman by the groin was highly offensive. The joke is funny if both sides are laughing. If only one side (I.e. cis people) are laughing, then it’s probably offensive.

And military is part of it.. you gotta talk about entitlements too" Why is it that "entitlements" like Medicare and Social Security, that people have PAID into their whole lives and should be entitled to receive when they are retired, that's why they are called entitlements, are justifiable to cut, more so than military spending that the very first DOD audit uncovered $125 BILLION in waste and is designed to funnel money to shadowy defence contractors and bomb civilians around the globe in order to open markets to profitable and powerful corporations like oil conglomerates and unaccountable private security firms ?

    They've been cutting non-"defense" discretionary spending (a.k.a. money that goes to help Americans) for decades now, claiming the need to "balance the budget" on the backs of the poor and middle class while handing out tax breaks to the wealthy. It's long past time the Pentagon got the axe. Remember the "peace dividend" we were supposed to get when the Soviet Union broke up? That was over 25 years ago. The military budget just keeps growing. It's time to go to the block, for the Pentagon and the billionaires. The rest of us have given enough.

    Because when you're fixing a budget, you have to look at the biggest items to have a real impact. Medicare and Social Security make up more than half the budget ($2T). Military is the third highest ($600B). You can't close a $500B+ budget deficit without cutting from each of the top 3 categories.

Medicare and Social security make up anout 1.6 trillion in spending, but the revenue from payroll texes alone is over 1.2 trillion. Social security also has a trust fund that generates interest. The only way to get to 2T is to include Medicaid, which is a different program. And even then the program specific revenue streams, including some fees, the 3 programs together are about on par with military spending.

When what he should have done ... as a Democrat... was to ACTUALLY AGREE that Tulsi Gabbard has a truly GREAT PROGRESSIVE AGENDA... which is what is needed, to win the Progressives, Sleepers, and many Republican Veterans... none of which are going to hit the voting booths, to support the fallacy of 'any blue will do'.
