    Ok, I have a serious question on Overpopulation bugging me out. After this video and reading other sources, studies, books ("Empty Planet", Darrell bricker) I am astonished on how Wikipedia treats the subject, leaving no space to the hypothesis it could be just alarmist myth. Now, normally I trust Wikipedia and when I see a huge discrepancy between a theory and what's stated on Wikipedia I see at least a warning light something's possibly wrong. I know wikipedia is not the bible (pun non intended), but do you have any idea on why this discrepancy?

My late grandfather who worked for the World Bank told me it's a hopeless country where typhoon-caused floods wash the people out to see. He said the country needs to be put on stilts. This week, I saw a video of the flood-evacuation shelters they built. People didn't use them initially either because they didn't get the warnings or they didn't have separate male & female bathrooms.

    Statistics prove stereotypes only if you don't know how statistics actually work. For example just by showing the chart at 5:38 I would've been able to predict the conclusion main of this video. The chart clearly shows that over population will steady out yet most people won't know to look for slope as well as concavity.

    More people doesn't necessarily mean more progress, if we have lots of uneducated people and hardly any educated people the progress rate will stay the same, and with the school system's decline in doubting we'll be in such good shape. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Population_curve.svg . Overpopulation is *not* a myth, it is already here, even if the hopeful conjecture that the growth will stop turns out to be correct. (An aside: how annoying that the video presents the conjecture as fact. Kurzgesagt is usually better than this.) But even it it turns out to be true, we are already more people than the world can sustain, to say otherwise is crazy: we're even causing the *climate of the entire world* to change because of it, and causing mass extinction of thousands of species. Most of the most pressing problems of the world can essentially be boiled down to: too many people using too many resources.

    Great video, however, it misses one very important point. Unlike before, the current situation is that the richer countries that have arrived first are not helping the ones still transitioning. Contrary, they are exploiting them to live better, faster, while the poorer countries will most likely never catch up, as it does not benefit the tycoons and big businesses in the west. What we get cheap in the west, is because someone has not been adequately paid in the east! It would be good to see a similar video that takes this point into consideration. But there again, the ending may not be so happy and promising as this one!

    I really think this video is a positive world propaganda video, that is very typical for Kurzgesagt and of course everything that Bill Gates does. Things won't turn out this way. You really think the afghans will make less children? Or most of the other countries? Russia's Putin said in the new years eve speech 2 years ago, that the Russians must become *more*. In these systems on earth, children are soldiers, social security, status symbol and feel good pills for both, parents and government. Why would you think people would stop making more and more children? Because they get wealthy and generally secure enough to do so??... Not in authoritarian, capitalistic and religious societies, where the masses wage war against each other and not the tiniest crumb of bread is being given for free, all because of mistrust and fear for each other. This video is nothing but a lie. Living conditions have worsened already so much through so many people being on earth, that this feature is causing diseases enough for people never being able to give up their ability to make their own inner circle of trust, their family. People can't behave naturally, because every place is overcrowded and around every corner is someone who can start watching you. The shit is going to hit the fan soon. I'd say in 20 years. And it only will get worse from there, because nations will not be able to cooperate, as people in countries aren't. This video is bs.

Luckily the predictions can't come true at all, we can still surprise the UN and science if we encourage others having more children. So lets start on another problem solving campaign! Step 1: analyze the causes of decreasing population growth Step 2: encourage the people who are causing the decreasing of population to change their life style to hetero sexual, having sex on a way they will grow Step 3: show reasons and give clear arguments Now I've got a question, can you explain how the 5th stage looks like? If yes, give me a picture of the 5th stage which Kurtzgesagt missed

  • @terryhoath1983

    @terryhoath1983

    "Hopeful" it might be, but totally misleading. Humanity needs another human mouth like it needs a hole in the head. Despite all the murder and mayhem, the population of Afghanistan has increased from less than 4 million 40 years ago to more than 40 million today. The result is vast numbers of them bursting out of the country, many of them with the idea of squatting on us in Britain. Britain is already grossly over-populated yet we are faced with an invasion of illegal Mohammedan criminals, over 40,000 have come across the Channel so far this year (November 2022), it may top 50,000 by the end of the year. We have an impotent government that growls and spits about it yet puts them up in 4 star hotels when they arrive instead of dumping them straight back into France where they have come from. If the French people are stupid enough to let them into France, that is their problem. At the moment Macron laughs at us with every one that makes it to Britain. The population of Nigeria in 1977 was 67 million. It is now about 215 million and increasing at the rate of 4 million per year. Far too many of them see Europe as their answer. There are attempt at a mass invasions armed with ladders sticks and rocks into Melilla, the Spanish enclave on the Moroccan coast. On 24th June 2021, there was yet another invasion attempt with sections of the border fence vandalised. Official figures suggest that 24 were killed by Moroccan border guards. 2 border guards were killed. The real death toll was probably in excess of 100. The Moroccans don't want them in Morocco either. The answer is birth-rate reduction measures in the breeding hives across the World and sanctions against governments inspired by Mussolini and Hitler running breeding programmes to provide soldiers for their armies. In the last 60 years giraffes have been wiped out in 6 and possibly 7 countries of Africa. Why ? Because increasing human populations in those countries have killed them for meat. The idiots on this video have cited Bangladesh and Iran as countries where birth rate has dropped. In the case of Bangladesh this is true but births are still above 2 children per woman and with the average age of death so low in Bangladesh, they will be hoping that people will stop dying so early. This is why China has run a one child policy (actually about a 1.3 child policy) for the last 50 years.. If births drop to replacement level (2 children per woman) the population will continue to grow as people stop dying. Wise heads in China realised that a 2 child policy would work provided you are prepared to accept mass starvation. They did not find the prospect of mass starvation to be acceptable, hence the 1.3 child policy. Despite the 1.3 child policy, the human population of China has continued to grow a little bit every year. In the last few years, that growth is coming to an end. As the policy began to bite, they have made a number of small relaxations. In 2015 they made another relaxation announcing that where a couple were themselves single children, they could have 3 children. Very few have taken advantage of this offer, many Chinese women having become self-regarding and wish to maintain the swimming pool tummy. The relaxation is possible because Chinese people, living into their 80s, 90s and many living over 100, have now begun to conk out. Unfortunately, many Chinese men are addicted to tobacco but the average age of death for Chinese women is dramatically better than in the USA, so many American women getting fatter and fatter until, as great big blobs, they burst leaving piles of stinking, putrefying fat on the pavement. The assertion concerning Iran is complete rubbish. Large numbers of children are the norm. We can reduce the birth rate taking enforcement action against individuals and regimes that refuse to comply OR we can have a Worldwide deadly epidemic or a nuclear war. I prefer the birth rate reduction answer myself. How about you ?

    @The Noobest Girl It shouldn't be. Overpopulation is still the #1 driving force behind climate change. According to the EPA, In the U.S. roughly 75% of all CO2 emissions are generated by transportation, energy, and industry demands. Although most people enjoy living in a nice house, with electricity, shopping on Amazon for clothes and tech gadgets, such a lifestyle is detrimental to our environment and a strain on our finite resources. Even with the emergence of green technology our energy demands must be drastically reduced. The truth is modern civilization is unsustainable. The way I see it there are 2 paths our species will choose: Either governments will be given more power to regulate markets and stifle climate change at the expense of our natural liberty, so that the many (7 billion or so) across the globe can live in moderation (that is if governments of all countries can agree and follow through with such a plan), or we will undergo some sort of depopulation via vaccination, war, or totalitarian rule in which few (500 million, maybe less) can live moderately lavish lifestyles to ensure sustainability.

  • @TheJester-ct5pi

    @TheJester-ct5pi

    @Nick Arjomand Calm down for a second. You're saying climate change is driven by consumption, I agree. Our current levels of consumption (in the United States) are unsustainable if the entire world were to follow suit. Climate change would be catastrophically worse. I have a question for you: What constitutes a reasonable amount of daily consumption and energy usage per individual? If you think that the average American uses a reasonable amount - to drive to work, energy for their home, to put food on the table, relax with entertainment - then you see the problem isn't with consumption, it's with overpopulation. Too many people trying to live a decent life given modern technological advancements is driving climate change. Do you see what I mean? And if you can't determine a reasonable figure for daily consumption and energy usage per individual, should such a number be determined by a government entity, to enforce restrictions on individuals limiting what they can and can't do? This is a very complex issue that can't be responded with "that is a load of bullshit".

  • @TheJester-ct5pi

    @TheJester-ct5pi

    @Nick Arjomand I never said overpopulation is the "single cause". Population is not decreasing, it's still increasing, while CO2 emissions are increasing as well to meet the demand. Plus you didn't answer my question. Don't bother wasting your time typing if you have nothing valuable to say.

Were you wrong before or are you wrong now? You need to be more specific idiot. You're an example of why depopulation is the solution and not reduced consumption. Return this world to it's natural state and allow natural selection to do its job.

    @Nick Arjomand SimpliGene. I've done a bit of research on you, you seem pretty intelligent for your age. Why then is it hard for you to comprehend that in order to combat climate change there exist multiple solutions; reduced consumption, and/or reduced population. The fewer people, the more consumption per capita, the greater quality of life. The more people, the less consumption per capita, the lesser quality of life. Why choose the latter over the former for the continued improvement and progression of our species? Please tell me you understand.

    Depends on how you define first world living conditions. The 1980's American lifestyle probably wouldn't work (although I haven't run the numbers), but if you define first world as and industrious, safe, clean, and adequately fed population with access to modern technology, you could cut a lot out of the American lifestyle and still have 'first world' living conditions.

    yeah which is why we need to recycle more. if we went to buy bread does it really need to come in a plastic bag? if we get a new phone do we really need another high quality carboard box? if we need shampoo can we reuse the bottle we had from last time? and when things break can we just fix them instead. i think humans can sustain a high standard of living if we can give up some of these wasteful habits.

    The planet is indeed overpopulated. It’s very obvious look around you it’s crowded everywhere you go home prices are skyrocketing there is a food shortage labor shortage and even water shortage in some areas. I always hear how I have to have a roommate just to have a livable life and I am the kind of guy who wants space of my own and if I can’t have that unless I work harder or make more money than most people than the planet is overpopulated and there are not enough homes for everyone. it’s also obvious I have the cost of living and everything increases all the time. Everywhere you go there’s too many people there’s homeless people left and right that is getting worse every year there are people living in roommate to do as many as five people in a one bedroom apartment or even a studio in some areas. Now you tell people that the planet is overpopulated and that there are not enough homes and jobs for everyone and they get furious with you.

    @@Stevesguitartraveling777 Honestly, that’s more a problem of car dependency than anything. But if you look at the US population (growth) you may start to see the population starting to plateau. This is late Stage 4 of the demographic transition model. Stage 5 is when the crude birth rate drops below the crude death rate starting stage 5. This is already happening in economically advanced nations like Japan. Other countries will soon follow. But traffic won’t go anywhere. There are too many cars for that. Bikes and public transport could help though.

    @@electroninja7419 oh, yes, car dependency is a problem and has been for decades and that’s because America decided to build the “fantastic“ suburbs where everything is so spread apart that nothing is within walkable distance, and that you have to drive from place to place in the suburbs are way more spread out than the cities and the reason cities are becoming so overly crowded now is because people are starting to realize that the suburbs suck and more people, especially the younger generation like my age are leaving because we’re sick of traffic and most importantly we’re getting sick and tired of inflation on cars skyrocketing to where car repairs are an arm and a leg and are not an affordable source of transportation anymore. And if they were to dense it up and build homes and businesses, like Boston did for example there would be more homes and businesses for everyone and more importantly we wouldn’t have to worry about climate change, as there would be no air pollution from cars. But even then, with all of the young crowd leaving the suburbs, it’s still overly crowded with no affordable living like I keep hearing the same topics over and over which is inflation lack of affordable housing no apartments, available blah blah blah, and I told them it’s because we’re overpopulated and there are not enough homes for everyone

    It would be pretty cool to see a video on the science of biological needs for physical space per person with relation to mental health and our evolutionary requirements on mental health, green spaces etc. Alongside this an explanation as to how much physical space planet earth has effectively on land. than how much space the biggest animals need or the most demanding animals for space and how much space we need. For humans, both advanced countries or efficiant and poor contries or unefficiant vice versa with production. A not so efficiant society typically taking up lots of animal space and clearing land (forests, rivers etc) for production, later after acknowledging when production is caught up, restoration of the land is required and the economy can fund and support parts that were deemed exsessive clearing. Explain how a society working through the stages of a revolution today with production requires expansion but how much land it takes roughly for each human living within that land. ABSOLUTELY fascinating

    A bit disingenuous, Kurzgesagt? Essentially no discussion of scarcity or pollution? The reason the Earth currently supports ~7.5 billion people is because about half of them live in that scarce resource impoverished state. I'd rather have seen a video about how we can provide a 1st world lifestyle to 12 billion people without destroying the Earth, not a video that simply says population growth will eventually stabilize. That's not even outside common knowledge, and it's almost all this video stated. Everyone's so worried about global warming, but I guess no one cares about the additional greenhouse gases that will be produced by providing a 1st world lifestyle to those billions of people? How about feeding them? I know in the United States we're at risk of polluting or depleting our natural aquifer resources that we rely on to provide water for our cities and crops. You literally rely on scientific advancements to ease every problem, but what if we hit a wall? It would only have to happen one time to cause disaster. There's too many unknowable concerns to even list and explain here. Your video is negligent to even discuss potential issues. It's a more complex issue than you made it seem.

    Only the very foolish, or deluded, will say that everyone will live like a First World person. The reality is that they don't need to - quite a lot of people on Earth right now get along just fine with less resources. A middle-class family of four in India or Bangladesh will live on 1/3rd (or even less) of the resources a middle-class family of four in the First World needs, and that isn't too bad. It can't be compared to life in America or Britain, but it's nowhere near the destitution we imagine it to be. Hardly unsustainable, I should think.

China, for example, has horrendous smog and pollution issues, and they still burn huge amounts of coal and will continue to do so for a long time. I figure this should be pretty common knowledge. What do you want me to say about it? Mainly I just hate this perspective that downplays the problems because all people want to hear is that everything will be ok. If you disagree, that's fine, but I'm not going to write up a dissertation about it in a comment. Kurzgesagt has an audience of millions, I just have a few randoms who bother to debate.

    As a paranoic person that fears doom by over-population I can't but thank for your optimistic, yet quite realistic forecast and sharing of factual, great data. Keep it going!

    Your paranoid about that??? Thats not something even the UN can control directly. Plus the only issue is. The United States consuming far more resources than most nations combined. Countries like Africa and Japan consume far less resources given its population than the US.

    It’s not that complicated. The earth gets too populated , people will be killed. It’s that simple. Humans primary instinct is to survive . All of the laws and bullshit that prevent people from killing one another will be tossed aside when it comes to life or death matters.

    @@waldox1 i think people generally wasting food and other resources are a bigger problem than prisoners (some among them being innocent and they all are humans, let's not forget that)

    As a colombian (arguably, an underdeveloped country) i can say this for sure makes a lot of sense. My grandmother for example, had 12 kids!! and that was just normal back then, my father had 5 kids and i am only planning on having 2 kids, maybe one will be adopted. This is why education on these issues are SO IMPORTANT and only now i'm seeing why.

    My great-grandmother's parents were terrified of having her. Not because 13 kids was a huge number, but because 13 is unlucky. They got around that by her being one of two twins, so they didn't have 13 kids for long. They had 16 children before they were done. Great-grandma went on to have eight children, grandma had four, and mom had three, of which only me and my littlebrother survived to today. (fuck brain cancer)

    I totally agree with you im asian American and I'm planning to have two children only. This video was important to learn about overpopulation because let me tell you this, my parents have 5 kids and it leads them to poor. This is why vietnam needs to have 2 child policy

    AngieZu yes and dont forget that there are people who will not have any kids because either they dont want , or selfish, or afraid that life will be hard for them. Its a growing problem in my country France. Most of my friends refuse have children because they want enjoy their own life (egoists) , or afraid that their kid will have to face many difficulties in life...growing gays issue (now we have a lot of gay advertising on TV)..women or men cant have children because of their infertility...
