This Week’s Happy Hour Special: Smoked Campfire Mule
Ingredients:
• 1 1/2 ounces bourbon
• 1/2 ounce of lemon juice
• 1/4 ounce of maple syrup
• 4 ounces of ginger beer
• 1 toasted marshmallow (for garnish)
• Wood chips (for smoking)
Instructions: Before mixing the cocktail, smoke the glass. (Pro tip: The smoke will stick better to a chilled glass.) Light the ingredient that you’re smoking (we used a few wood chips) with a match. Turn your chilled glass upside down over the smoke and allow it to fill the interior of the glass. Leave your glass upside down over the smoke and start making your cocktail.
Add the bourbon, lemon juice, maple syrup and ice into a shaker, then shake until chilled. Strain the liquid into the smoked glass and top with ginger beer. Garnish with a toasted marshmallow (use a kitchen food torch to toast it) and cheers to 2024!
Pull up a chair to the happy hour you wish your friends were having. Mix two money experts with some hot takes and a splash of nostalgia, and you get Rachel Cruze and George Kamel talking unfiltered about what’s going on in the world, pop culture, and how to afford a life you love.

In 2022, we had a huge party for my grandmother's 90th birthday. She sent me a sweet thank you card afterward. She passed away in October 2023. Three days before she passed, I got her signature from that thank you card tattooed on my forearm. I showed her after I got it, and she said, "You crazy thing!" I'm so thankful I've kept her cards and notes she wrote me the last few years.

100% agree with the craziness of the Stanley cups. I got my daughter and I the same size/style of cup as a Stanley but only spent $16 on it at Homegoods. It does all the things a Stanley does but for a forth of the price. And we use them everyday, not displaying them on a wall.

Going to a restaurant in general is overhyped. We (personally, not the general we) place incredible importance on the event to do so, but almost always leave at least a little disappointed, because what is an incredibly important day for us is just another day at a ‘meh!’ job for the servers and cooks at even some of the more expensive restaurants in our area. But having a meal at home made with the intention of a special occasion just feels special. I just want to be the person in the kitchen as the restaurant opens and remind everyone that this is a birthday, this is a first date, this is a special post chemo dinner, this is…[put in reason people are going out here]… they are choosing us to make the moment for them.

Totally agree on the used car point. When we needed a new vehicle this past year, after some research on available vehicles within a reasonable drive from us, we purchased (with cash!) a 2006 Kia Sedona van with only 82,000 miles on it. Great mechanical function, has a few very minor cosmetic issues, but overall an incredible deal. We discovered while researching different vehicles that family vans seem to have a poor reputation due to social pressures pushing for SUVs (at least in our area in the mid-west). There were quite a few vans that didn't have outrageous mileage on them that mechanics and dealerships cut the prices down on just because buyers have been trending toward SUVs, not because they were clunkers. And let me say, after once owning an SUV - I love my van way more than any SUV. It may not be as "attractive" to drive but we get decent gas mileage and there is plenty of room for the kids/pets/Costco or Sam's groceries, etc. Function over fashion wins.

George is so funny! He really makes this show a hoot! And, hand written thank you notes are a MUST. It doesn't matter how you personally feel about it - it's about showing appreciation and gratitude to the person who took the time and spent the money to give you something or do something for you. It takes 90 seconds to write one. It's a lost art in our ungrateful, entitled society, sadly.

What I do is take a photo of the gift being put to use, or send a quick text to say "I'm using what you got me, thank you!" or whatever else. For me, TY notes take a much longer time to write because I want to say a lot more than just a few sentences... so, everything is a novel for me. So, that is the only reason I don't write them but I do give verbal thanks and visual thanks very often!

I am on my feet the moment I get home from work investing time into my marriage and raising my children while working hard to pay off debt so that I can be a full-time stay at home momma when that debt is paid off and we are financially free. Once that happens, and IF I have the time, I will take the time to write my novel thank-you's to all those who gave me gifts out of the kindness of their hearts but didn't give the gifts because they expected a written thank-you card in return. Because if you think about it, it isn't a gift if you expect something in return. But again, thank you for taking time to suggest how I should thank someone.

If someone sends me a Christmas card from Shutterfly with a picture of their kids with a typed message it goes directly in the trash… if someone gives me a handwritten note / card etc I hang it up/display it and cherish… the person put time and effort into writing me a note with a message meant for me!

I was intending to at the time, but I had to be induced two weeks after the baby shower because of a medical emergency. I didn’t even get a chance to properly organize and get through everything before baby came. It all felt like a whirlwind and in the midst of it, I had many family members calling me ungrateful for not thanking them properly. I saw the Mona Lisa in Louvre, stood in the long line, took a selfie. It was exciting bc it is famous, but I do not know why it is so hyped.

Yes to renaissance man!! But please put on KZread for those not on social media 🙏 Also Rachel you are spot on with your hypothesis about life post-sports! I was nowhere near Olympic status but after finishing my college career, it was so strange to just not be an athlete any longer. It was a huge part of my identity for so long- can't imagine if i had been in it longer how crushing that would be. Fortunately I realized I have my identity in Christ first and foremost. But your analogy that it's like the feeling post-wedding is so spot on!! And it also fits for actually winning too, after acheiving a goal you really wanted like winning state or something, after you accomplish that it's fun and great but for a relatively short time and then it's like okay what next... And as an adult I'm not telling people my accomplishments from my past when I'm meeting them- that would be weird. On a different take, I met an Olympian at a job I had (a wood sauna actually lol) so since in that setting you can just talk openly, I was asking him about being an Olympian. I had to basically pry it out of him since he was so modest (that he was an Olympian) but it was really mind blowing that the biggest takeaway from going to Rio was how incredibly poor the slums are there and how sad that was, seeing the vast differences in wealth so obviously. Literally none of it was about sports at all, just humanity. 🙏❤️

Crocs are undergyped, they are the most comfortable shoe to walk around in for my 12+ hour shift in the hospital. Also great for gardening, if they get wet they dry pretty quick.

George, is there a reason you haven't used a little door stopper wedge? Just keep the door open unless someone has to use it, so Olive doesn't get locked in. I don't have time to read the other comments so maybe someone suggested this. Just curious. I feel like there is an easier solution. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Love the podcast! 💕 minor suggestion for 2024: maybe put George on the right chair and Rachel one the left. When Lindsey is shown in the final minutes, Rachel and George will look about the same height. The camera angle seems to magnify Rachel at the forefront and makes George so distant. Even Rachel's chair seems twice as large from that angle.

26:31 What would you suggest for young adults who live with family? (i.e. parents, grandparents) I love the idea of potlucks and I also feel like a lot of people in my age group do not invite each other over unless they have their own place and that it's not the easiest to navigate when cohabitating with other family members.

Cargo pants are a national treasure. In high school during marching band trips people made fun of my cargo pants and funny pack until they needed to store their sunscreen. Who's laughing now? Okay, no one, but still.

just add some lock tight on the door hinge. Just a drop or so on 1 of the hinges is probably what you need for each door.

Showing gratitude is never wrong or wasted. Write a note or an email or at least a text. I send gifts to my grandchildren and never hear anything! It’s very disheartening to me. The younger generations seem entitled and ungrateful.

But hand written cards to and from your spouse is really important in my relationship. We give each other a card on our anniversary and both have them all.

Used cars are worth it if you do the homework. Don’t just get it inspected - look at a Carfax and see how it’s been maintained. I’m amazed at how many people never get their fluids checked or changed. Some people run their cars to the ground, and you could be buying a car like that if you don’t research.
