Overhead Trip Computer Console Install 2001 Dodge Dakota

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After reading through 100's of different forums, and compiling all the necessary information, this install was not that bad. I had never done one, but looking back, there are a total of 6 wires and you are done!
I hope this helps some folks out there, and if you have any questions, just give me a shout!

In the 2001 QC there is no need to splice into the BCM. On the other side of the steering wheel (Near the HVAC-box) is a huge connector full of the BUS wires. In the install I just did, I re-used the 3 wires already from the lights there and brought the other handful down to the fuse panel and the large bus connector on the side I soldered on the pins and inserted them properly into the fuse box, and just grounded the proper blk/grn wire. Lot less chance of breaking something that already works.

Thank you for this, I am not swapping out my console BUT i need to redo the fabric for my headliner, and this by far was the most informative and step by step "how to take off visors, A pillar, console" video or description I have ran across yet.

I went from a clip-based overhead to a computer and got the computer hooked up just yesterday. One thing people need to be aware of is that while the molex plug itself was used for many years the color of the wires changed. My computer is from a '02 and I got some wiring from a '99 or '00 maybe and most of the relevant wires were a different color than documented in my '02 service manual.

I just went thru the install, your video was very helpful. My console was the mini size and required no extra cutting or removal of the mounting plate. I do have a few comments. 1) No need (in my case) to remove the visor clip -- plenty of flex in the headliner in order to snake the wires thru. No need to pull the weatherstrip either. 2) Don't leave the screws in the visor mount -- sure way to lose them. Drop them in your cupholder instead. 3) I left the original molex connector in place for the lamps -- transplanted the lamp wiring from the old "clip" console, it was a snap. 4) Ran new wires for B+, keyswitch, gnd, and CAN (bus). The only one I had to splice was CAN, and it was right where you pointed out. The others all hooked into the fusebox (empty fuse slots) and the ground to a bolt adjacent to the fusebox. 5) Also installed the auto-dim mirror, only ran keyswitch & gnd,& ran them to the same points in the fusebox as the console wires. My '03 Dakota did not require a dimmer wire -- dimming is done via the CAN bus. My total install time, including programming Homelink == 2.5 hours. I did some prep work building the harnesses ahead of time. Temp sensor was already in place. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for watching and for the comment, the update video is coming, I have the install of the auto dimming review mirror in the update video. I am still tracking down why my temp gauge reads "- -", and as soon as I have that solved, I will finish the video and get it posted!

I know you made3 this video a long time ago but by any chance, had you found the answer to the temp sensor issue? Was it just a bad sensor, or was there some other reason it wouldn't read?

Isn't the wiring more involved on a 99 Dakota? I'm wanting to attempt it but I don't see anyone that's posted about doing it on a 99. I think the CTM on a 99 is on the passenger side.

@@waynemackenziesr5005 From the old threads I've read and when I can get some advice from people who've done it, it appears that the new wires from the overhead console connector just have to be spliced into the #3 Joint Connector on the back of the fuse panel. Plus a ground. I'm holding off having it done until I can find instructions specifically for the 99 since the way the computer communicated was different.

Two questions: the little bulbs behind my "US/M, Reset, . .. ..., Step, and O/T" words won't light up. Are they powered in serial? I have one removed right now and I'm hoping that's the problem. It could also be blown bulbs, but it seems unlikely that both would be dead. What is the reading that looks like a timer and is followed with a little text showing "ET"? At first I thought it was the time, then a timer, but it changes so unpredictably I can't tell.

how did you connect the rear view mirror and for the ambient temp sensor did you run some wires or how did you connect that, just need to go to the junkyard and get me a temp sensor for free.... lol

Its been done, its not too different from what he had to do here, you're just replacing the lights with the console rather than changing the console to one with the computer/homelink buttons.

That's a tough one, I suppose it could still be installed, but I would be curious if you had the wiring in you CTM for the trip computer? Try asking over at dakota-durango(dot)com forums and see what others think. There has to be someone out there that had the same setup.
